Description ...Some diamonds that I'm pretty happy about.. I've redone this diamond model a few times and I finally got something that I think is acceptable (maybe..?) Any tips/critiques/suggestions would be appreciated...especially concerning caustics...

Cinema 4D

September 2005

Update: 09.19.08

After not touching this piece for three years, I finally dug it up and tried to make some changes that some of you suggested. Mostly, I reduced the reflection somewhat on the marble floor. Still didn't get much with the caustics; it seems that the default renderer for C4D just isn't powerful enough to get the realistic type of look I was looking for. Oh well, what's done is done. I'll keep this one this way as a learning experience and try to make an entirely new one in the future....

It's been said many times already, but I honestly thought this was a gorgeous photo. Then I realized it was an even more gorgeous digital painting. Wow!

Absolutely stunning I love the gems and how you got them to look real The only thing I think I would have done different (if I had the skill to do this at all!) would be to make the direct reflections (not the light reflections) a little less intense on the marble because in some places they are almost distracting. Mostly the second farthest one on the left closest to the imaginary camera if that makes any sense. I don't know if that would be more real or not as I have never seen a real gem larger than the bitty one in my engagement ring. Just my opinion, and I love what you have done! Definitely ing!

Thanks for pointing it out...and now that you mention it..yeah it is a bit distracting...haha. I'll try to lessen the reflection when (or if!) I fiddle around with this piece again.

Thanks for the input

This looks stunning.

How hard is it to make diamonds in a three demensional program?

Did you do all of the basic coding?
How many images did you use?
Was there much skinning in this process, or was it mainly effects?
Did the rendering take all day?

That's.. a lot of questions..haha

I think if you have enough references, with, I guess you'd call them blueprints, of the specific cut, it's really not too bad.

I didn't do any coding--Just used the tools available to me in C4D.

I used...a lot of reference photos, but was still unable to create all the lighting effects I wanted to.

I used one material on the diamond models and everything else was experimentation with lighting.

I...don't remember how long this took to render (this was on 2005)

Sorry, I ask a lot of questions to learn, and also to see if the artist might learn something as well ^_^

I think thats probably the downfall of not using any codes what so ever, sometimes (I've seen it done on some weird stuff) codes will make everything so much easier, but I guess if you don't know how to use the codes it might be cheating

What were the lighting effects you wanted to achieve? bright pale blue or something?
Did you ever think that you could achieve this image on any other medium, say Vectors for instance..... ?

Did you learn anything from this, and if you did what was it?

Questions are fine!--Really lets the artist think about/reflect on their own work as well

I don't really know what I was aiming for...a lot of it was experimenting with...just a bunch of stuff in general and to see if I could do this and that etc...Kind of like "hey, this looks okay, I'll stick with that..." I suppose that's why it's difficult for me to "fix up" this piece, since I never had a clear goal in mind.

I actually work in a jewellery store and I will even say that your pictures looks real at fullview. The only thing that I noticed was that the reflection was a bit underwhelming. I though at first the "real" gems where cubic zerconias rather than diamond since the refraction of light though a high quality diamond is much more intence. If you can get a hold of someones engagement ring and put that on a black cloth, then shine a spotlight through the diamond, you should be able to get an idea of the reflection that way but I don't know how difficult that would be to render.

Either way, thats my two cents and I'll be faving this piece as well.

Thanks so much for the input. Yeah, I think that was one of the more difficult parts to do as I didn't have too much knowledge about those kinds of things. I'll keep your advice in mind when I edit (or start a new) piece.

i cant do anything like that, and it looks very GOOD! but i will say after just a second or two i could tell it wasn't real... i am not an expert or anything, just what doesn't "look right" to me.

1. the diamonds seem to be too sharp looking, the facets, and edges are just razor thin. it doesnt seem to have any weight as well. too perfect!

2. the sheen from the marble reflection just seems too high.

of course i have never witnessed diamonds in a spotlight on highly polished stone! so i could be WAAY off! if it was meant to look REAL, then maybe a few subtle changes. if it is meant to be high end "CG"..it looks superb!

looks fantastic, and very realistic though! i am being very nitpicky. i could not do what you have created

It's perfectly alright to be nitpicky. Pointing things out like that could really help the artist see things they didn't notice at first and improve in the future. I'll definitely take your suggestions into consideration when I get to fiddling around with this piece again (sometime soon I hope -_-) Thanks for the input.

I've never seen them like that either...I guess it's time for more research!
