Description Written for

It's been a long time since I uploaded one of these, and since my attitude towards some of the aspects of painting portraits has changed more than a little since, I thought that this might serve as a decent supplement to the Ten Points from Gryffindor tutorial. However, while TPfG was written as a sort of step-by-step guide to painting portraiture, this is more of a general discourse on how to approach the painting (sort of a "why I'm doing this-and-that"), and I've tried to keep overlaps to a minimum. So if you want to know what brush I use where (mostly hard brushes set to high spacing), why I hate soft brushes and smudging, or why on earth there's purple in my palette, I'd suggest you go read TPfG - if you haven't already.

Please bear in mind, however, that, being self-trained, I'm probably not the best person to offer *any* of the above advice - so if any of it is misleading or downright wrong: I will not take responsibility! ROFL.

Hey, we have the same "meticulitis" syndrome
I tend to become very immersed in a work of art (or practically anything that requires detailed attention) but I think what you say is true, there's absolutely nothing comparable to the joy of actually painting something in a carefree style every once in a while, like now for example, I want to start painting with watercolours, which seems to be incredibly exciting... even though my usual choice is realism
realism is nice but it sort of ties you to minimalistic details till you lose a bit of the original thrill. But like you say, it's a very challenging thing for people who want to test their technical skills to a maddening level

"Meticulitis"!!! Oh, I like that.

And yeah, I find that when I paint digitally I tend to get... obsessive with the neatness, so my pictures tend to lose a certain sense of spontaneity. I tend to be more daring with my strokes when I'm using pencils/inks/CPs.

You should try watercolours. If you make a mistake... just wet the area and sop it off!

Dragonfly22 In reply to DarthFar [2009-06-27 21:40:36 +0000 UTC]

Haha definitely! Watercolours have that extra bonus feature for the sloppy artist (not implying to insult anybody ) And yeah, I know what you mean, but I think your pictures are great, however obssesive you get about them

p.s. If I get to make something decent out of the lovely reference I have, I'll show you! (I know you didn't ask, but I'm impertinent and egocentric like that sometimes )

If you were to see close-ups, you'd have no doubt that it's a painting - and a very messy one at that. Thanks!

You've really put a lot of effort into this tutorial. It's probably the most detailed one you've done yet. As usual I love reading your little "jokes" that you just have to add in there. This is awesome Far! Thank you so much for sharing this.

PS: The Shaolin Monk comment was on my mind as well, at one point.

Jerkwad! I'll have you know that I have never sported a Shaolin Monk 'do, except as an infant, and I never intend to again.

Anyway, thanks for reading, glad you enjoyed it, and no sympathy cookies will be handed out for your going blind as a result of the choice and size of fonts.

!!! @ jerkwad! Sticks and stones, Far! Sticks and stones. Okay, okay, so I won't call you one, but you're really quite cute, now that I get to see your whole face for once.

Oh come on! I need to have at least one or two cookies while I read your articles, or anything else you write. And you're too late, I'm already as blind as a bat.
