Description
's Influence Meme has been going around and it looked like too much fun not to do. ^_^ In my case it's more of an inspiration meme than influence - not all of these have left a lasting imprint on how my art looks, but they've all influenced why I *do* art.Top row:
Charles Dana Gibson, illustrator famously known for creating the iconic "Gibson Girl" look.
Anne McCaffrey, author of the Pern novels - the Harper Hall trilogy of YA books was the first sci-fi/fantasy I ever read and is still something I return to for comfort or to ease back into reading after a long dry spell.
Ivan Bilibin, Russian illustrator who did beautifully fairy tale illustrations.
Masamune Shirow, artist and creator of Appleseed (the manga, please, not the movie... the movie was shiny, but the Dark Horse translations of the manga were what first dragged me into the world of manga and anime.)
Middle row:
Nobuo Uematsu, composer responsible for almost all of the early (pre FFXI) Final Fantasy soundtracks, which are my most commonly played music while writing or drawing.
Mamoru Nagano, artist and creator of the Five Star Stories, which, alas, was only barely translated over here and is next to impossible to find. I collected years of Newtype magazine in the original Japanese in order to get most of the storyline. With a basis in fashion design, this is the man whose art taught me that a) clothes should make sense and not be painted on ala superheroes, and b) mecha don't have to be boxy and square ala all of the 1980's mecha anime.
Alphonse Mucha, iconic art nouveau artist, whose design sense I wish I could just absorb by osmosis.
Donna Barr, artist and creator of the Desert Peach and Stintz, which might have begun my enduring fascination with World War era Germany from the average citizen's pov.
Bottom row:
Patrick Nagel, artist perhaps most famous for the album cover of Duran Duran's "Rio". Terribly dated art nowadays, but the minimalistic line and use of negative space and limited colors still appeal to me.
(underneath that) Hyung Tae-Kim, character designer of the Magna Carta games. I took the time to figure out how he draws - his style isn't really my thing (none of it stuck) but I still refer back to him for his absolutely gorgeous color palettes when doing digital art.
(beside those two) Enya. That's the cover from Watermark - I like her earlier stuff better than the newer. Again, a large portion of my drawing and writing soundtrack (I love instrumentals or things in foreign languages that I don't speak. Lyrics that get stuck in my head distract me.)
(underneath all of those) Chris Claremont, writer of the X-Men, back around when I started collecting - my favorite string of story arcs are all his (Dark Phoenix, Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants, Inferno). Also, I enjoyed a number of the artists during Chris Claremont's writing era - John Romita Jr, Walter Simonson, Mark Silvestri, Arthur Adams, etc.
And lastly, the large square - Wendy and Richard Pini, and the Elfquest series. My dad shoved the first watercolor graphic novel into my hands when I was seven and in one fell swoop opened my eyes to the world of comic books. I've never been the same since. ^_^

Oh, Magna Carta! I remember when you were piecing together his style, and you made that excellent Edea picture. I remember being so amazed that you just looked at it, and broke down how to do it.
(I was/am neomeruru on Facebook. We haven't been mutual friends in a while, but I still follow your journal regardless. )

Hee! Thanks. I go through phases of mimicking, sometimes, and then the question is always what will stick and what won't. Magna Carta colors are definitely a keeper. That's two thirds of what makes it awesome right there.
I'm useless on Facebook unless you play clicky games (Farmville addict, yes, I am) but I'm totally going to stalk you on here now. ^_^

Oh man, did I say Facebook? What a loser, haha! I meant LJ, but they get wrapped up in my head as I've transferred my day-to-day meanderings to FB and left my LJ woefully empty.
