Description I'll be honest. The Watchmen comic had me somewhat disappointed in the end. It's as if Alan Moore just sat down at his desk one day and thought..."Hey, I've got it! I'll scar the memory of everyone's childhood by Humanizing the superhero genre!"

The only problem is, Alan Moore's writing from what I've read by him usually plays out something like this. "Rocks fall, hero dies, the world gets a reboot that cannot possibly last over ten years and will crumble into bloody anarchy or totalitarian rule."

The reason everyone's so charmed with the concept of superheros is that they can't fail. That's what makes them super.

And also? Seriously? Astronomical death counts = World Peace?
How messed up is That?

So, for everyone who was a bit bummed out by the Watchmen's ending....I offer the hero edition.

:EDIT: Props to for teaching me (via observation) the angry face of doom.

While you are at it, have the protagonist from the "Dawn Treader" run into Saint Frances De Sale on the beach to explain to him why Calvinism is wrong and why he does not have to throw his life and soul away to shift among pirates, that he can still find forgiveness for his mistakes.

well, it made sense in context; the only REAL superhero of the group, if you count superhero as being a person with powers, is Doc Manhattan. so they are realistic, as they all make mistakes and have their flaws. -Daniel N

That wasn't moore's philosophy it was veidt's hypothesis and the ending was pretty open to interpretationΒ

I like Watchmen. But i've got to admit, I like this ending way better.

Vedit: "I'm going to save the world by killing BILLIONS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE! My plan is PERFECT!"

and everyone basically wen't: "Yeah ok, whatever. Let's get some burgers."

But what about the others? I understand Manhattin, but Night Owl and Specter (i forgot there real names)? Come on. They became vigilanties in the first place to HELP people, not let some rich kid kill a bunch of people to create a peace that has literally no hope of lasting.

They both just gave up, I understand that was the point, but that doesn't mean i have to agree with it.

The point in Watchmen was not only the argument but the shape on how was built. I think than all the comic writers after watchmen didn't understand the real meaning of the seires. It was far beyond the idea of psychological damaged heroes or dark grim and gritty situations. Watchmen was built upon redundant images, subtles iconogaphies, balanced tricks in visual narratives. Most people just see a tale of "dark superheroes" when the way how was done grapically is what make it such a masterpiece.

So.. It was a "take that " to the modern era?

Ziggyman In reply to DarthScribbles [2013-05-01 22:16:37 +0000 UTC]

Hardly, it was one of the comics than started the modern era (if you understand for "modern" era the mid 80s). Afte Watchmen, all superhero genre for a long time ditch the amazing and fell in dark times, themes and tropes. What I'm saying is than people looked more on what was told than HOW was told. And sadly that was overlooked.

Pity, but not everyone is ready to understand it. It take me years to me to catch about was REALLY was.

There's no way I could not hate a comic that ushered in the age of grimdark for the superhero genre.

Ziggyman In reply to DarthScribbles [2013-05-03 14:30:32 +0000 UTC]

Don't forget than Dark Kninght was also partially responsible for that.
But properly said, I don't affirm than it was Watchmen the masterpiece than started the "dark age", it was the misunderstanding of the work and its message (the way than comics could be done instead only what they are talking about). As I said, what made Watchment relevant is how take the visual language in comics and streched to new limits. The only new innovation I had see in such style has been in Locke & Key.
For example, chapter 6 was done (in write and drawings) symetically: There is an exact number of panels from beggining to end and the first one is a reflex/opposite to the last panel, could be in scene, angle or concept. There is only one panel which alone and is the one from the middle.

Siiiiiiill hate it.

I think I understand what you're trying to say a little better now. Yeah, I'll agree that watchmen took it up a notch in storytelling for comics. Also Locke & Key is really nifty.

I actually liked Watchmen's ending, and the comic as a whole; I will admit however that this is GENIUS, and would have also been a good ending.

hahahahahaha, very funny! and cool in a weird way. i mean, silk spectre and dr. manhattan, nite owl, ozymandias, comedian, they all do sound like weird codenames, don't they? but, in terms of the comic, that is EXACTLY what alan moore was thinking. his whole intention was to make a realistic superhero story. and the ending was meant to be unsatisfying and messed up. alan moore's approach to art is to never give the audience what they want, but to give the audience what they need. he's very much a realist when he writes.

only problem I see is that the setences are too complete for Rory I'd have seen him as saying "No compermise, needed these?" and then held up the wires "Failed..." then again it might have been harder to follow, forget I said anything, this wins epicly and should get a DD sometime if just for the Watchmen fans

Thing is the watchmen aren't humanised super heroes imo, they're just people with sort of hero stickers on them. Apart from doctor manhattan who is sort of like representing "lol superpowers would actually be pretty shit guys think about it"

No but I still totally loved this classic priceless wunderbar etc
