Description Ladies and Gentlemen! I give you... Erik's Nose Part 2.

Thought it'd never come? HA!

No, really... forgive my laziness regarding this short comic that could've been finished much, much earlier (it's only two pages long, by gosh!)

Enjoy, my loves!

Wow. Michigan! Awfully far north, eh?

It's not so bad. Remember, we lived there for five years. The climate is similar to the Pacific Northwest - except during the winter. Lots of green, which I really miss; and because it IS farther north, it doesn't get dark until later. Sunset is close to 9pm, maybe 9:30pm this time of year, while here it's much earlier than that, thanks in part to the mountains to our west. Sunset is probably around 7:30pm here.

The temps fluctuated a fair amount while I was there. 1st day was mid 80s, humid and sunny. Next day was overcast and about twenty degrees cooler. Then a sunny, warmer day, then it was cool again. Not sure if the 59 degrees for that day was the high or merely the temp at the time I checked the news.

Ah well, I'm now back to 100+ temps and arid.

Give me Michigan any day.

I'll be in Chicago tomorrow (hence the really short message--I'm packing. I expect to post multiple times during my weekend away, though. See you then. Oh yes!! And Courtney Hale sent me a WONDERFUL idea I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate. If that works out, it'll be HYSTERICAL.

Right, right. I always worry about that! I don't have any children who are entirely dependent on me, so when I travel I think "If something happens to me, I won't be able to finish my stories!" Oh dear. Now I'll be worried!

Mominator In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-05-29 05:32:32 +0000 UTC]

No dependent kids here, either (all grown and gone. Woo hoo! ) But I never travel (fly) with my good jewelry. In part because it's too much of a hassle to take it all off then hurry and put it back on again at the airport screening area, and in part because if the plane crashes, it won't get lost or stolen.

Ain't THAT pessimism at its best.

Barb

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to Mominator [2009-05-29 15:28:43 +0000 UTC]

LOL. You want to talk about pessimism? How about this? I don't HAVE any "good jewelry." Well, maybe I do, but my husband keeps it in his safe and I don't EVER remember the combination, so it's as good as not having any. Oh well. I don't wear jewelry anyway, so it's hardly a problem. (But my understanding is that you don't have to take jewelry off unless it's fake. Silver and gold don't set off the metal detector, right?)

All that aside, I just hate flying. I'm not afraid of the plane going down, I just HATE the security check points that's all. After all, a real terrorist would never go through security...

Mominator In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-05-31 16:33:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, none of my "good" jewelry is really worth much, but I'm sure my kids would rue the loss of my wedding rings. At least, I'd like to think so. I certainly don't have anything good enough to keep in a safe! (Of course, as you say, if you can't access it, it's like not having it at all.)

I'm never TOO worried about the plane crashing (though it's always in the back of my mind), but why take chances?

Speaking of long lines and security checkpoints, did you read that Jane Fonda supposedly rode a wheelchair through airport security just to bypass the line?

Actually, the security lines aren't too bad when I go to MediaWest. The tiny airport out here (we actually walk across the tarmac and climb up the plane's stairs!) only handles commuter flights to and from LAX, and the planes only seat about 20 - 40 people (depending on which plane they use), so the line of people never takes more than 15 or 20 minutes, tops. But because we've passed security, we don't have to go through it again in the big airports, unless we change airlines.

Lansing airport is significantly larger, but still tiny compared to the BIG airports. (I think they have around 6 or 8 gates) It probably takes even less time through security, because I've never seen much of a line of people waiting.

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to Mominator [2009-06-01 12:15:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes. Wedding rings. Well, THOSE I don't ever take off, not even for planerides. I have a necklace I don't take off, either. Other than that, I might as well not have any jewelry because I really can't be bothered to change it out and try to coordinate with outfits and everything.

I didn't read that about Jane Fonda, but if it's true, it's very hypocritical. I'm still waiting for her to apologize to the Vietnam veterans for everything...

See, I have to use San Antonio International Airport. It's very close by and though the lines are pretty fast, I just fine security a pain in the behind. I don't really believe that taking my boots off helps prevent terrorism, you know?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mominator In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-06-02 06:25:07 +0000 UTC]

I do take my wedding rings off. I figure if my husband won't wear his (he hates jewelry, and it could be a hazard in his job - he hasn't worn it for probably 20 - 25 years.), it doesn't hurt for me to take mine off for showers or sleep.

Or plane travel.

Here's one link about the Jane Fonda/wheelchair story:

I haven't the time to get to that link. I've been working 14 hour days and when I get home I have the usual house and family stuff to do as well. Oh well. Reading about Fonda would only piss me off anyway. I think I'll skip it this time. I don't need anything to put me in a worse mood.

I can't imagine having a full-time professional career AND caring for a house and kids. I was a housewife until my kids were teens (well, I DID have a part time job - 1hour 35 minutes a day on weekdays) and even now my job isn't full time.

How do you find the time to do all you do? Work, clean, care for the family, and write (so wonderfully!)? Man, I'd be frazzled!

Yeah, you're not missing much by not reading the Jane Fonda article. Just another case of a celebrity who deems themself too important to follow the same rules the "little people" do.

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to Mominator [2009-06-04 00:57:16 +0000 UTC]

Well, my full time job is in public education, so while I'm at it, my kids are at their school. That works pretty well. I have a husband who was a single dad before he met me, so he doesn't have all those old-fashioned ideas about how women cook, clean and do laundry. He does as much as I do, which is fair because I work outside the home almost as much as he does, and I do more of the work with the foster kids, especially the paperwork, which he can't be bothered with.

I AM concerned because in another year or two I'm going to be ready to start the part of the family that will be biologically related to me and THAT worries me because I have a very idealistic view of how I want to handle THAT. I mean, I'll be 33 this summer yet and the reason I don't have any kids yet is not because I'm getting any younger but because I wanted to be certain I was financially ready to do it right. Now I am, but what about TIME? You know? But that having been said, I don't intend to let anything frazzle me. I spent too many years that way when I was teaching and that's why I had to give it up.

Bottom line: I think it's a mindset. I'm not always calm and collected, but I'm getting better at it. Let's see how actual motherhood affects that... Hmmmmm....

Mominator In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-06-04 18:02:45 +0000 UTC]

I suspect things won't work out quite the way you imagine, but I have no doubt you'll roll with the punches and be successful all the same.

Just a bit of advice: recall what you didn't like about your folk's parenting and try to avoid doing the same. Not always an easy task. Sometimes it's like a reflex - after all, that's what you learned growing up - and sometimes it kind of sneaks up on you in an "OMG, this is just what my mother/father did!" moment. But don't be too hard on yourself if you make mistakes (and you will), just remember next time and make a conscious effort to do things/react differently.

Yeah, my husband and I pretty much share equally in the housework, too - NEITHER of us do it.

Geez, I'm old enough to be your mom! Heck, it's getting to the point where I'm almost old enough to be a lot of posters'/artists'/authors/ GRANDMA. Ack! What's that pain in my joints? (arthritis) I forgot what? (alzheimers) Where are my reading glasses? (eyes going bad)

What were we talking about? (snicker)

Yeah, definitely getting old.

Barb

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to Mominator [2009-06-04 23:38:25 +0000 UTC]

Well, it already happens with my foster children, actually. See, I think I told you before my mother didn't particularly care for me... and since my kids come and go, there are often situations were I have to discipline a child I'm not bonded to, and I hear it then. But I don't think it'll be the same with *my* kids. We'll have to see. That having been said, there's a greater chance of it happening if I have a girl. My mother hated me. My grandmother hated my mother. I bet my great-grandmother hated my grandmother. But I can't even imagine that same dynamic with a son. It would just be different (like my grandma and my uncle. Or my mom and my brother... of my grandfather and my mom...) Let's just hope G-d is merciful...

Hey, you may be old enough to have kids my age, but I doubt you're actually my mom's age. She had me late. So, see, there's that. That's positive anyway!

Oh stop! You're not old!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mominator In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-06-05 09:00:25 +0000 UTC]

I'm not old, eh? Tell that to my grey hairs and aching joints. I may not be as old as your mom, but my daughter is almost your age. She turned 29 on the 1st.

Besides, I have a (almost 9-year-old) grandkid, so that means I'm officially old.

Wow, I'm sorry you had to put up with a mom who hated you. What an awful family trait to hand down. But YOU'LL be the one to break it, I have no doubt. You know what they say: knowing the problem is half the battle.

My mother didn't hate me, but I don't think she liked me very much. I apparently reminded me too much of her own mother. (I probably scared her. ) And you know, I was sad when she died, but I've never really missed her. In fact, I'm ashamed to say, I realized about a year ago that I had NEVER hung or displayed a picture of her.

I'm sure a psychiatrist would have a field day with that.

Sorry to hear you've been without Internet. I had noticed that I hadn't heard from you, but I didn't put 2 and 2 together, really.

I'll be in and out of the house today, and may shut down the computer again this Saturday. It was a nice change.

Mominator In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-06-20 04:31:59 +0000 UTC]

Wow, shut down your computer? Voluntarily?!! That's crazy talk!

Yeah, I'm addicted. Even without the internet, I got my PotO fix by rereading stories I've archived. (I've even got some stuff that's been removed from ffn, or taken down and changed. )

You know, I think the Kayverse has embedded itself in my mind. When I first saw DarthxErik's plan of Erik's home, I was thinking: "But that looks like a regular house, not something between the two giant tub-like retaining walls in the opera house foundations." Then it occurred to me that I'd probably read that description in "Phantom."

As for my absence, well, I HAVE gone longer without communicating - months, as I recall - with no more excuse than laziness, so I figured you'd take it in stride.

But I've got to say, the timing of this last outage couldn't have been much more inopportune. Eric's sister graduated in Seattle last weekend, so he left on Friday and returned Tuesday. I came home from work on Friday and the internet was out. (Sigh) All those days he was gone and I could spend as much time as I liked on the 'net, blown. Dagnabbit!

Wonder how long it'll last THIS time?

Well, it didn't happen. Can't go into why except in a private note, but it turned out I wasn't going to be able to shut down for the full period of time anyway, so what's the use in performing 1/2 a mitzvah, you know? So it's on, and here I am.

Well, you're right, Kay's the one who said it, but my Wolf edition of Leroux has a place where the Persian is explaining about the house to Raoul and Raoul realizes that Erik had likely built between the walls. So... she got it from Leroux, sort of. But you know... that's only in the uncut edition, not the standard edition.

Wow... that totally stinks about the 'net. I hope it lasts this time... because we're going to be putting up a picture of plush Erik in a couple of days!

OMG, the plushies are going to be ready soon?!!

I can't wait.

Yeah, I don't know what it is about our internet connection. The guy who came out was able to fix it (despite the fact that he's a cable tech not a street guy) - it's apparently some problem in the box at the end of the block. He told me they've replaced the whatever once already, but it's obviously not staying fixed. He said he cringes whenever he sees our address for repair requests. And no, not because I've been nasty about it. (Sullen maybe, but not nasty. ) He also mentioned that the houses to the south of us share in this problem.

I would go with another provider, but there IS no other provider of cable internet service in the valley, so we either stick with (now) unreliable service, or go with a company that's significantly slower (and probably doesn't have any better service than this one.) Grrrrr.

It's especially frustrating since internet access is (imho) the modern equivalent of phone service. It's getting to the point where one is really crippled if one does not have access. Heck, even the evening news programs don't tell you all the news - you have to go to their websites for that.

People would never have tolerated such lousy phone service. I don't see why this should be any different.

Anyway, time to stop ranting (for the moment) I suppose.

Well, they'll be ready to POST on the NET as a picture and say "See? This is what they look like." But they won't be... you know... ACTUALLY ready just yet. We're still fussing about with the size and such. The problem is that they made them much smaller than I had hoped for the price. But we'll have something up soon.

That's terrible about the 'net. I know. I couldn't live without it, seriously. I don't know what I'd do!

I just posted again, which means I have to go write again. I have to stay a bit head, you know? I'm going to go do that for a bit, then go to bed. I'll catch you tomorrow, if your Internet doesn't crap out by then. 'Night!

I'm still catching up with all the fic I missed during our last outage. I think there are still a few older postings before I get to your "Don Juan." Though, come to think of it, your new chapter will have moved it to the top of the list again (and I'm working my way from oldest to newest), so it'll take a little longer before I get to it.

You know, quite frankly, I wouldn't mind a smaller plushie than 12". Something 6" or 8" would be good. Wouldn't take up as much room. (Easier to hide under my pillow.

Will they make up a prototype for you to okay first?

That's what's going on. We're on prototype number 6 or something like that. The first one was AWFUL.

Right now, he's 12 inches tall standing, but as he comes in the sitting position, he's more like 7 inches.

The trouble is that a lot of folks will expect a bigger toy for $20.00, and based on what they are charging me, I don't think I can charge less.

I hope you're right. Though, at 19" and $25.00, I might do better, don't you think?

I WISH I could offer him at both sizes and buyers could choose, like the Universal Plush toys. But Universal Pictures has a lot more money than I do. Of course, that does make my Erik all the more limited. Can you imagine? 250 of them total in the WHOLE WORLD? That's sort of amazing to think about. Of course, if they don't sell, I'll really be in a bind, though...

Mominator In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-06-25 05:21:00 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure. Personally, I don't care for large dolls. I have a handful of 16" - 18" dolls (all Tonner), but I prefer Barbie size - probably because I have so many of them.

I like them smaller because they don't take up as much room. It's the main reason I don't go for the 1:4 scale dolls. They're great quality, and the cloth clothing drapes better, but they're just too dang big.

But then again, younger phans just might prefer a larger size as many of them probably still have a collection of stuffed critters on their beds or shelves, and a 19" Erik would fit that scale better.

Does this help any?

Yes and no. I mean, it's nice that you'd be pleased with a smaller Erik... I think I personally would like a larger Erik. Then again, at this point, I don't NEED an Erik (because I have my Universal Pictures plush Erik. And yes, younger fans probably want the larger one.
