AHA!!!! Here's my casting ideas... #2!!!1. So now that HUGH JACKMAN has been the first confirmed cast member of the movie, I decided to do another round of ideas. Firstly, I added him to the top of the list. Ironic how I had placed him in the role of Javert last time around and Russell Crowe as Jean Valjean. Now we've gone topsy turvy. (And I don't think that my ideas on the last slew were intentional at all.... I might've gone off of someone else's leading, but not any casting directors. haha) Lastly, I think Jackman has shown lots of presence in hit movies lately, period dramas, AND musical theater showcases. He was in Oklahoma, hosted the Tony Awards, and also did some stuff at the Oscars. His range is definitely bari-tenor, despite the fact that he's gotten all BARITONE roles in his musical theater past. That's fine by me. Just listen to THIS: [link] and tell me he can't belt high stuff. SEE? "This is the Moment" is technically a bari-tenor song.
2. So Russell Crowe is "in place" for Javert, pretty much meaning he's almost got the part. It's still to be confirmed officially. I honestly like this casting choice because from what I can tell, Crowe is a versatile actor. Ok, maybe he's always played the angsty heroes who always die at the end (WHY DIDN'T HE GET PICKED AS VALJEAN I ASKYOU---oh it's probably got something to do with his voice. lol) but he has always pulled off "serious" roles. I think that's enough in my opinion regarding acting. Now, for his looks he seriously looks like Quasts' twin brother. LOOK AT THAT PONYTAIL!!! *shot*
Ok so, shameless ponytail displays. But I came across a bunch of them. Could I help myself??
And in case you guys were wondering about Crowe's (I was ABOUT to type Quast, no joke) voice... he's got some country/rock songs on youtube. It's kind of like pop.... with country I can't tell if this guy can sing legit musical theater or not, but he's a "singer". IN FACT, before Crowe became a famous actor, he pursued singing in being part of a band. Hey! Kind of like Gerard Butler.... *shot*
3. Fantine. Ok so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE refer back to my first casting ideas deviation. MARION COTILLARD can't be beat. She's my first choice and forever will be. Just listen to the understated drama she has going for her in "Nine." Sure, the movie was a flop, but whenever she sang she brought interest back into the film. She's a wonderful lady.
Anyway... but for this slew of ideas, I thought I'd go with the newest option thrown into the mix.... Anne Hathaway. Yep, apparently she's already in negotiations to play Fantine. I personally think she can do it. And could do a pretty darn good Fantine. She's definitely the right age, has a decent belt voice (refer back to the Hugh Jackman video) in mezzo range... and has a great repertoire of movies (especially period!) that she's been in. Eh. I wouldn't MIND her. So I'm just throwing her out there.
4. I know this gal has been mentioned a million times for this role. Helena B. Carter... must I need to explain this further? Ok? She's in talks for the role, she's very very famous yada yada yada she's probably going to get it so there. (but I still refused to put any screen-shot here of her as Ms. Lovett)
5. NEIL PATRICK HARRIS AS ENJOLRAS. OR GRANTAIRE.
After watching Dr. Horrible's singalong blog, I fell in love with this guy. This actor is great! He's cute, hilarious, but also can be dramatic and deep. So, in my opinion, he should be considered. Did I mention he can SING? And I mean he's an amazing tenor. Plus, he's blonde. So basically if they need a more "serious" actor for Enjolras then Grantaire would be a good role for him.
6. Emma Watson for Eponine. At first I didn't like this idea one bit. It's been rumored that she's being considered for the role, in more than one spot, so she's in the arena of things. Reason why I didn't like it is that she's very KNOWN for something. Harry Potter. Who in their right mind can get past that? Now I'm not a huge HP fan (in fact I've never read/seen it... *dodges tomatoes*) so I can see the hesitation there. I wouldn't want to cast a gal I've seen a million times and will ALWAYS see as Hermoine.
But look at it this way folks... she could act the part, she's british (don't know how that exactly helps but I think it does)... she LOOKS the part (angst-y, dramatic etc but not necessarily ugly. Young looking, right age) and could probably pull it off vocally since she's a "singer" as well. Again, can't tell from her pop albums if she can legit-ly belt, but I approve.
PERSONALLY I NO LONGER WANT AN EPONINE WITH AN AMAZING BELT OMG VOICE. I want an Eponine that centers around the acting. Sure, I don't want her voice to make my ears bleed... what I really want is a singer like the Japanese gal on the symphonic recording. Someone who allows the music to flow in the song instead of trying to wow us with her powerful bombastic voice. So yes, a whispery and emotional eponine would be my preference. -end of Eponine rant-
7. Lastly, Lucy Hale for Cosette. The honest truth is that I don't think this girl has the vocal range for Cosette. Or at least... hasn't shown it yet. But she's being considered for either Eponine or Cosette, so I thought her as Cosette was a better fit... appearance-wise mainly. If you check out her singing videos, she's got a legit belt voice. Refer back to the paragraph just above this though where you'll see that that's not my main criteria for Eponine, but there you go. Lucy COULD also play Eponine. But I think if an actress LIKE Lucy Hale did Cosette, it would be terrific.
An actress like Lucy Hale (I don't watch pretty little liars, but apparently people who watch tv do. I don't have cable, only netflix...) would bring some relevance and youthfulness to Cosette's character, making her more of a protagonist that we root for. Plus, she's beautiful not just in her innocent and pure attitude, but in her sexy curves as well. Cosette doesn't have to be homely.
With that said, I think you guys can be judges as well and post your own ideas. Let the further speculation BEGIN!!!
That was a LONG description. Kudos if you actually read all that.

Russell Crowe didn't get picked for Jean Valjean probably because he has little history in musical performance; just independent stuff as far as I can tell. Hugh, on the other hand, has performed many times in broadway musicals, including his own show just last year.

the only ones I disagree with is the last one. I feel like lucy hale is not very cosette- esque, but that may just be because I havent seen her in many roles.

I like her looks for the part. I know now that Amanda Seyfried got Cosette, but to me Cosette in my mind looks like the girl who played Snow White in Mirror, Mirror.

I heard that they were looking for a new face for Cosette. I didn't realize they were also getting some celebrities into the mix. My friends older sister is actually getting considered for playing Cosette which is cool. Neil Patrick Harris. Awesome choice.

It is. At the end of the day though (haha accidental reference) they went with an actual star. I think it's that girl who was in Mamma Mia who played Meryl Streep's daughter.

I really wish Alan Rickman was Javert.
I just think he's perfect for it. Especially after his performance in Sweeney Todd.

Hmmmm, I'm not much of a supporter of having no-talent actors play parts I dream of.....though I do think the casting of Hugh Jackman, Russel Crowe and Helena B. Carter might be good. (ok, they're not no-talent, but they're too mainstream. Yep, I'm a hipster...
)
I have to agree that Marion Contillard deserves that role! She was the best in the film version of NINE! Anne Hathaway just annoys me now.
Other than that, they should get actual Broadway actors, people I KNOW have talent. Not that make me think "Oh hey, they sing?!". Especially when dealing with such a musical as Les Mis!

great points! HA. I so wish Marion would be considered for Fantine. Anne Hathaway is not my first choice. But it looks like they're really set on Anne. poo.
And I agree! I hope they pick just a few b-way actors that are well-known for some of the roles.

Yeah, that's what it said on Broadway World.
EXACTLY! For example, Sierra Boggess just keeps getting better with her career, she's already played Cosette. I'd love to see that!

So depressed that Marion Cotillard isn't Fantine, I seriously fell out of my chair from pure squee when I read your original cast suggestion.
That said, I do like Anne Hathaway alot, so she's not a terrible pick for the role. I just really hope they don't play up some sort of Valjean/Fantine romance, cause I don't support Valjean being shipped with anyone, lol.
Overall another really good list, not the biggest Lucy Hale fan myself, but you made a good point about her "youthfulness" and all, and that makes sense. I'd be curious to see an Eponine with a more raspier "Bonnie Taylor" sound to her, but that's just me.
BTW, saw all your "Monster in Paris" stuff and I must say I am intrigued. Do you know when they plan to release it here and if they'll have subtitles?

Me tooooooo That would've been the PERFECT choice. oh well.
I agree, I don't mind a little bit of a "what if" glimpse, but to fully ship it is just-- NO.
Yes, I totally am for a "raspy" sounding Eponine! Or at least a feeble little thing, not your typical broadway belter in the role.
I don't know when MIP is going to be released, but I do know it's going to actually be in English in theaters!

Idk how Anne Hathaway will turn out, considering she's probably going to be Fantine. And Emma Watson's acting is amazing and I love her, but I've never really heard her sing. I must sound like a real hater here, too, but I've never liked Lucy Hale. I've never really been into popular TV actors/actresses like her interfering with stuff involved in theatre. I guess I just like to keep them seperate The rest of the cast, however, I'm perfectly fine with. I guess it's just all the younger popular chicks I'm questioning XD

Yeah, I'm curious too! She'll be terrific in my opinion. A bit sad to me that they can't get someone like Ruthie Henshall (who will FOREVER be the best Fantine ever!!!) but I understand, Anne Hathaway is definitely a big name and can do the role. *crossed fingers*
I've never seen harry potter *shot* but she looks like a great actress, great everything. Never heard her sing except for her pop album, so I can't judge by that. Who knows? If she's in, I can't wait to hear her sing.
I never watch tv, actually... I don't have cable, only Netflix. So..... I haven't seen Lucy act. I just liked her face. XDDD

You've never seen harry potter? You should sometime They're great! But yeah I hope Anne Hathaway can do it. Same here with the fact they can't get someone like Ruthie Henshall; she is the best Fantine
Emma Watson is a great actress; for many of these I just don't know if they have the voice for it. And I have never seen Lucy Hale act or sing, I'm just not a big fan of TV or TV stars:/ It just seems to me they aren't as good, hence the reason they do television and not movies or theatre. But that's just my opinion
