Description I beg of you, fellow phans in London: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT see this bloody musical when it opens in '09. If not for our sake, then, for Erik's sake...

Don't let Andrew get a single penny from this little experiment of his. Hopefully his doteful mind will return to its former decency and respect for the character of Erik, whom he once cherished and admired.

I hope I'm not making too big of a deal out of this... but I truly find this all to be very sickening. I can't help getting very defensive when I see my favorite story and characters get butchered by the very man who helped to introduce the tale to me in the first place. Instead of degrading Erik and making himself look like a laughable mess, Andrew should quit making these musicals while he's ahead. He has my permission to retire and he can have my word that if he forgets all about this little business, so will I. No one will ever mention it again, and we'll all live as if it never happened.

Oh, how I hope he comes to his senses.

Still, if he doesn't....

... we phans will not lose heart. We know who Erik is-- whether it be the original psychotic genius from the novel, or the Erik created by Andrew himself; we won't see that image die-- and I will be sure to tell my kids about THAT Erik.

{I love Phantom to death. I have nothing against the movie, but I prefer the stage play and the original book by Gaston Leroux for many reasons. All of this to say: The plot for the sequel destroys the characters, and in many ways... doesn't make sense. The Phantom of the Opera is not a sappy story with a happy ending. It's a tragic tale about love and despair. A continuation after the dramatic ending to the movie/play wouldn't fit. It's like Jack coming back to life in a sequel to the Titanic. }

Again, perhaps I'm taking this all a little too far. Apologies. Please leave a comment....

i'm really sorry-- does he treat you like that anymore? that is not cool! at all! and have you had a chance to talk to someone in real life about it, like your parents, a guardian, relative, mentor... teacher, pastor?

Um....I haven't seen the musical but I have heard the sound track and read the synopsis and it's not that bad of a show there are a few songs in there (vaudeville style) that Andrew should not ever try to do again. But I agree there should not have been a sequel but if you watch the movie really closely at (like at her grave) the end he is hinting that there is another story we need (okay maybe not need) to hear. So you don't have to freak out this much. I still LOVE the first one but when I get the chance I will go see Love Never Dies. Because most of the songs are beautiful and (dare I say it in my opinion) live up to the first one like these songs:
Look With Your Heart
Devil Take The Hindmost
Love Never Dies
Till I Hear You Sing

And This story doesn't have a happy ending either it is quite depressing

yes i do need to freak out. B/c even if ALW or anyone felt the need for a sequel, they could've done ten times better on some natural and believable character development. And plot. (even though I wrote this several years ago) I still agree with my stance. The sequel is bad news and it was a terrible production in respects to the plot. And if I can't RESPECT the plot, I can't respect the PRODUCTION/musical.

I've seen stuff from LND... and will definitely watch the melbourne filming. But who has thousands of dollars to blow and see LND? I mean, I even CONSIDERED flying to see the POTO concert because I'm THAT obsessed (didn't end up happening because I live literally half way round the world) but why would I spend on a show that I already have major issues with? On the basic level? Just because it's Phantomy doesn't excuse it.

Look with your heart is kind of weak and disney-esque. Which song does it compare to? Angel of music?? Nope.
Devil Take the Hindmost (melody-wise) is pretty awesome. But in context of the story? Irritating to say the least.
Love Never Dies - perhaps this one's got a great melody, moving even. But wait. It's recycled from another ALW show. So out of context I like it, and sometimes sing it when I'm warming up my voice. And I love Sierra when she sings it. It's great.
Till I Hear You Sing - I ADORE out of context. LOVE IT.

I don't care about depressing endings. I don't care about happy endings. I care about PHANTOM. and its integrity. Sorry man.

I feel it's still a good show and even though I HATE all but one of Meg's song I still am glad that she has a bigger part and she has her own story to tell. But I do hear where you are coming from, and have you heard Phantom: The American Musical? yeah its no ALW but it tells the basic story in MUCH different songs and is pretty good (but is no where near ALW Phantom)

Oh yes, I love that musical! It's got great songs. But see, I love the story there too, it's like the miniseries with Charles Dance (which is my 2nd fave phantom film ever)

I thought Andrew Lloyd Weber was high when coming up with the sequel and... Coney Island! But, I actually do love the music and although the characters have changed drasticaly, I still love it. Put it this way, I love LND but I also LOVE this picture. IN FAVORITES!

Eh. I know you don't like LND haha. II knew that one from the moment I heard of a sequel. "Ooh, she would not like that after all of those pics of Erik." I still don't understand the plot. As I said, just the music I like though the plot is really growing on me. But the Coney Island thing really gets to me. Maybe because a town away from me there is this disgusting little hotdog place (actually known for it's hotdogs) named Coney Island. Idk. I feel like I can talk casual to you.

Yeah, it's sacrilege!!

The plot is very.... very..... unbelievable. That's why maybe it makes no sense. There's lots of plot holes.

The music, though, is very catchy. But it's not enough to make me like it as a whole. Believe me, the Ayrie, BAMS, and till i hear you sing are constantly stuck in my head... but all I have to do is stop listening to it for a while and it grows on me less. xD

There used to be a place near my house called "Coney dogs" or something like that. It closed.

haha Coney Dogs. cute. As I said, it grows on me more and more but the Coney Island. GAAAAAHHHH... I admit, I do love the show but I GET SO ANNOYED WITH BATHING BEAUTY!!!!!!!! I think I like it because of Ramin <3 I hear Phantom's being filmed on stage! !!!!!

I love Ramin, he was superb in the original. Too bad the sequel makes no sense, cause he's great.

Both LND and POTO are being filmed. LND is being filmed in australia (the stage show) and POTO is being filmed as a concert.

I walked into LND knowing how shit the plot was so didn't expect anything from that department, but I was blown away and feel in love with the music, the performance, the set and the costumes (I saw the Melbourne production, who some say is better than the London one because it got more polished up.) I have listened to the CD of the London cast, and maybe its the different cast or just hearing it live, but the singing and music in the Melbourne show was so good.

I do not associate LND as a continuation of the original POTO in my mind at all, because yes, honestly doing so will completely ruin POTO for me. I agree LND has a craptastic plot that overturns everything the novel or even Lloyd Webber's own POTO musical stood for. I really wished Lloyd Webber could have used a whole new story unassociated with the Phantom in the LND setting, because its a shame that the only thing that drags it down is its unfathomable storyline and butchering of the characters.

well, good luck! it's closing in august in london. It's still running in australia and it MAY come to broadway someday, but only if it does well in australia.

It's my favorite movie too! (despite all the ways in which the stage show is better!)

That's ok! If you want to see it, go for it.

I too love the phantom but this is someones work....and honestly I don't think this could be more personal too anyone than andrew lloyd webber. I mean he basically lived the phantom, I just think some phans are too afraid to leave the past behind and realize that they did continue to leave after that. And no I don't think it will be better than the original, but a lot of people have put a lot of work into this production and i think it's terrible to put that kind of creativity down.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarthxErik In reply to malchickowik [2010-12-10 01:04:16 +0000 UTC]

Well, I do hope Sir Webber is aware of what fans of Phantom of the Opera think of his sequel. Truly. I wish he could see how much people are against it. But I think he knows, and has defied everyone's opinions thus far, even dismissing them saying things like phans have "no lives" and are "sad" and "pathetic."

I realize he has lived Phantom, and I am greatly GREATLY appreciative that he worked on the original and made it such a huge success. It's sad to me that he cannot leave it behind or let it be, because it seems to me that a success such as it should be left by itself to be a classic.

I am not afraid to leave the past. In fact, I think ANDREW is the one that cannot "leave the past." I say: "why can't the past just die?"

I think a sequel to the Phantom of the Opera is nearly impossible, unless it is fanfiction. And that's not to say I wouldn't give it a chance. To me it's more disappointing what they have DONE with this opportunity to create a sequel, not that it in and of itself exists. The story is not convincing, the charaters are changed in a way that does NOT respect the original, and it sends messages contradictory to everything we learned in the original. The original teaches redemption and consequences for wrong actions (sadly.) The sequel sends negative messages of unfaithful relationships as well as unecessary drama that doesn't help the story move along.

I never expected it to be as good as the original, but at least it could have been a four out of five star. It turned out instead to be a two star or one star. (I've listened to the Original Cast recording and have seen a bootleg of the show for myself) and I realize that people have invested in it, and many peoples' livelihoods depend on the success of the show... I pray for their well-being. But the show itself concerns me and insults me as a fan.

I'm sorry for my ranty mood, but there you have it. I say, if you're interested: go see it. But I for one will never see this show upon the grounds of my moral standings and love for the original show and characters. Long live Erik!
