Description I beg of you, fellow phans in London: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT see this bloody musical when it opens in '09. If not for our sake, then, for Erik's sake...

Don't let Andrew get a single penny from this little experiment of his. Hopefully his doteful mind will return to its former decency and respect for the character of Erik, whom he once cherished and admired.

I hope I'm not making too big of a deal out of this... but I truly find this all to be very sickening. I can't help getting very defensive when I see my favorite story and characters get butchered by the very man who helped to introduce the tale to me in the first place. Instead of degrading Erik and making himself look like a laughable mess, Andrew should quit making these musicals while he's ahead. He has my permission to retire and he can have my word that if he forgets all about this little business, so will I. No one will ever mention it again, and we'll all live as if it never happened.

Oh, how I hope he comes to his senses.

Still, if he doesn't....

... we phans will not lose heart. We know who Erik is-- whether it be the original psychotic genius from the novel, or the Erik created by Andrew himself; we won't see that image die-- and I will be sure to tell my kids about THAT Erik.

{I love Phantom to death. I have nothing against the movie, but I prefer the stage play and the original book by Gaston Leroux for many reasons. All of this to say: The plot for the sequel destroys the characters, and in many ways... doesn't make sense. The Phantom of the Opera is not a sappy story with a happy ending. It's a tragic tale about love and despair. A continuation after the dramatic ending to the movie/play wouldn't fit. It's like Jack coming back to life in a sequel to the Titanic. }

Again, perhaps I'm taking this all a little too far. Apologies. Please leave a comment....

You just said that a sequel is nearly impossible, and if that's the kind of attitude you go into it with then I can almost promise you that you will not like it. Once my father ground up some oreos to play a joke on some friends playing that it was dirt, and he ate some to gross them out and then gave some to one of their kids. The child hated it and immediately spit it out even though he loves oreos because he already had the idea in his mind that he wouldn't like it. In the same way I think a lot of phans had already decided they wouldn't like this play (as I almost did) and didn't even give it a chance, and I'm sure that you will deny this and say you went into it open minded but just think are you missing out on oreos just because you went into it thinking it was dirt?

Yes, but I know it's dirt because I have been chewing on it for three years.

...I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that, because the play just opened this year. I'm not exactly sure if you mean that because he started writing the music around three years ago, which you couldn't have actually heard yet, and so you couldn't have been chewing on it...but either way I just feel sad because I wanted to have a mature conversation, and I'm not asking that people change their opinion, I simply want them to at least give it a chance, but I realize now that you will always to refuse to give it that chance. I just hope that others who see this posting will realize that too, and that instead of doing the same they will at least wait to see it with their own eyes, and hear it for themselves before making rash judgements. You might have a different opinion if everyone made such ill-considered decisions.

Listen, I-- wow. Sorry. I'm TRYING to have a mature conversation with you!!....

Let me repeat a few things I said earlier, with slight elaboration.

What I meant by "chewing on it" (forgive me for the use of humor!) was that I've known about the following:
1) the story (not word for word, but I read Phantom of Manhattan for myself, front to back and read every latest news on what the show would be like for three years!!)
2) the music (as soon as previews were out-- as soon as the soundtrack was out in the UK... I got a hold of it via internet! Listened to the entire thing overnight, and have listened to it frequently since.)
3) I even met Ramin Karimloo, the star of the show, who told me it would be an amazing redemptive story. I honestly wanted to give it a BIG chance back then, but as news kept coming that confirmed my original feelings, I started to laugh at myself... I was right.
4) I have analyzed this, believe me. I have NOT approached this with an attitude that is not willing to change.
5) and fifthly, I believe I mentioned that I watched a bootleg of the show from back in April... so I've practically seen most of it live. Seriously. I'm not disconnected from the real thing here.

So I know... TECHNICALLY I haven't seen the show live, technically I haven't ever been a fan of it... but that doesn't mean I haven't developed a well-rounded educated AND intelligent view on it over time! No rash judgments. Maybe I can't fly to London from the US, but I think I can make a pretty good opinion about something, the best I have known how.

And I'm really sorry if you're sad because I can't agree with you. Most fans of the original seem to see it my way... the original ended quite clearly on a tragic note, and it was a tale that touched peoples' lives. It WAS sad, but twas meant to be that way. This sequel has been proven again and again to be a half-hearted attempt of ALW's at making more profit out of Phantom... the most disconcerting thing about it is that he's gone out of his way to insult the original and praise his new sequel, calling the original "underdeveloped" having a "dissatisfying ending." Pssht.

I'm really all for everyone making up their own mind about it. And I'm really an all-loving phan. So again, if you like it, good for you. But I personally continue to find myself insulted by the lack of thought put into LND.

I respect your opinion. Thank you for clearing that up, I am sorry if I offended you, many people have not made well rounded decisions, but it seems you have done the best you can, and if you don't like it that is completely your decision.

Cool, ditto! Thanks so much for hearing me out. I also get that there are a lot of things in LND that appeal to certain fans, especially since it's so E/C. God bless!

In fact I would like to say that I agree with you. It's not like the book, and let's say it doesn't stand for the same principals. I'm not saying it's as good as the book or as the first play, I simply think it is still a beautiful story, with beautiful music. I don't really think it has much to do with the first one other than maybe a dream of Erik's. In fact I've never even really thought of it as a true ending but rather something that I wish would have happened (and probly erik too, other than the whole christine dying, which I must have say does give for a somewhat bittersweet ending that they book has) But I would just say you are more of a purist than I am, because to me it doesn't have to be perfect to still be beautiful.

Good point. I do enjoy some of the songs including "Till I Hear You Sing" and "Beneath a Moonless Sky" for what they are... great melodies. But I can't appreciate the musical as a whole, sadly, because it doesn't tell a good story. But I like hearing your take on it, I really can see what you mean. ^^

I read the argument above my remark, and I must say that you handled that very maturely and VERY politely .The fact that the LND fan started trying to politely insult you tells me that you have won the debate.
Kudos and well done.

I got the CD (I know, shame on me) and it’s basically just (bad) fanfiction set to music and given a big budget.
The worst part about it is the fact that everything always rhymes!!! I can’t stand it! It’s like a slow and painful death via limerick. I only wish I had known that before I bought it.
It’s totally backwards. It makes me like and feel sorry for Raoul. β€œWhy Does She Love Me” is absolutely heart wrenching despite the rhyming. I think it’s because the song sounds like something the Phantom would sing in the previous musical. I wish I only bought that and β€œDevil Take the Hindmost” because it kicks butt. THE REST IS WORTHLESS.

Took a look at it. Pretty nice and thankfully it has nothing to do with "Love Never Dies."

I'm not opposed to sequels, or fanfiction. I think they're great creative outlets. But LND is simply an atrocious work to make a CANON-ish sequel to Phantom, especially ALW's.

at first I wanted to go see LND...
then I found out what's in it.
I guess ALW has so many characters that he cares nothing about what happens to them.
*sigh* At least Gerard Butler cares about Erik. He said during filming that he cried every night.

Aw, really? Yeah, I think GB did good because to his best ability, he did an interpretation of Erik that still stayed true to the tragedy etc. and it's not his fault that his makeup was bad!! I heard he cried when he first read the script/heard the OC recording but I didn't know he cried every night! Poor guy.

I'm a huge Phantom fan and my parents know this. They saw something on tv about the sequel and decided to tell me about it. I looked it up and almost had a heart attack at what they were putting Erik through. I grumped about it for days and my parents finally told me to shut up because he wasn't real. I agree though NO sequel.
