Description
I beg of you, fellow phans in London: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT see this bloody musical when it opens in '09. If not for our sake, then, for Erik's sake...Don't let Andrew get a single penny from this little experiment of his. Hopefully his doteful mind will return to its former decency and respect for the character of Erik, whom he once cherished and admired.
I hope I'm not making too big of a deal out of this... but I truly find this all to be very sickening. I can't help getting very defensive when I see my favorite story and characters get butchered by the very man who helped to introduce the tale to me in the first place. Instead of degrading Erik and making himself look like a laughable mess, Andrew should quit making these musicals while he's ahead. He has my permission to retire and he can have my word that if he forgets all about this little business, so will I. No one will ever mention it again, and we'll all live as if it never happened.
Oh, how I hope he comes to his senses.
Still, if he doesn't....
... we phans will not lose heart. We know who Erik is-- whether it be the original psychotic genius from the novel, or the Erik created by Andrew himself; we won't see that image die-- and I will be sure to tell my kids about THAT Erik.
{I love Phantom to death. I have nothing against the movie, but I prefer the stage play and the original book by Gaston Leroux for many reasons. All of this to say: The plot for the sequel destroys the characters, and in many ways... doesn't make sense. The Phantom of the Opera is not a sappy story with a happy ending. It's a tragic tale about love and despair. A continuation after the dramatic ending to the movie/play wouldn't fit. It's like Jack coming back to life in a sequel to the Titanic. }

I wouldn't see this mess if someone paid me...I completely disagree with the idea of Meg being made into the villain of the piece...sweet, caring Meg ...and when the heck would the Phantom and Christine have been able to...you know...when she was unconscious?!!! My friend made me listen to the sequel's music and sadly the music is pretty but the story he chose was terrible, if he was to do a sequel or something i would have far prefered to see his life before he was the phantom something out of susan kay...not this trash or even better no sequel at all

Oh. Well... you know Andrew Lloyd Webber, the genius who wrote the music for the Phantom musical? Well, apparently in his old age he's starting to go out of whack because he wants to make a sequel to the musical for the stage. It's in production and will be released in March as a stage production... And the plot sounds terrible!!!

Oh my-- you haven't heard? It's all over! There's going to be a new stage musical called "Love Never Dies", a sequel to the original by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Most fans are FURIOUS about it. It seems like it is attempting to mutilate all the characters' diginity... Erik and Christine supposedly have a child, Erik runs a freakshow, Raoul is a drunk, Meg is a bathing beauty "ooh la la" at Erik's "Coney Island" fairground... may I continue?

Well, there are two songs released so far... "Coney Island Waltz" and "'Till I Hear You Sing"... go ahead and search them on youtube. The music's OK but not spectacular. I just can't get over the ridiculous plot. Also: They're going to try to make it so that Christine and Erik's love "never died"... ugh. So Raoul is pretty much out of the picture, and that's what most phans want, right? Well, wrong. Because that's so out of character.

It would be better if:
A: If it were it's own musical. Quite honestly, I think it would do rather well.
B: They based it off of of ANYTHING but Phantom of Manhattan.
I will probably listen to the soundtrack, but I most definitely won't pay money to see the show. It's going to be over priced, and a terrible show. I can tell ALW now: It's going to flop and it's going to hurt the first Phantom's reputation.
May the Lord pray for Erik's soul.

...not that I don't agree with most of what you said, but one minor thing:
LND is NOT based off Phantom of Manhattan. ALW had the sequel and plot idea years ago, and Frederick Forsyth wrote his book based on ALW's idea.
...just thought I'd clear that up.

A: What do you mean by "it's own musical"?
B: Ah yes, quite. I don't even live near any city that would show it soon, so I'm glad I won't even be tempted. Still. I hope someone posts a youtube video of it... ha ha ha.
I sure hope it doesn't ruin the first Phantom's reputation... I think the original can stand on it's own. There's a reason why millions have loved it... I don't think people will just stop liking it because the sequel stunk. But maybe uneducated, new theater goers will be oblivious to how TERRIBLE IT IS.

Oh! If were a brand new musical all on its own. For example, it not being associated with the Phantom name, but rather it being its own independent musical. Yeah.
Oh, thank goodness. Yes, resist temptation! D8 Though... I don't see any harm in downloading it...
Hmmm, true, that is a good point. I mean, if the new Phantom were to be the worst flop in history, I could see it hurting the first Phantom's reputation. However, I doubt I see that happening. You are right, though, about that.

YES. I think it would've actually have been cool if it was a brand-new story, new characters, everything. 'Cause I don't mind the carnival scene for the backdrop to a love story. It's actually rather romantic in a sense.

Yes, it is rather confusing. Where do my loyalties lie? In Erik, of course. ha ha. But it's rather tempting sometimes to just let go and not care.
I thought the music was pretty good... currently some of those songs get stuck in my head but they aren't really MOVING like the first ones were. Maybe I'm just a tad biased. But really, a story is crucial to a play. If you don't have a good plot, you have practically nothing.

I prefer to think that Andrew Lloyd Weber has gone senile. It's much easier to accept than to think that he rationally and sanely decided to make a sequel play to Phantom of the Opera. And then decide to base it off of the book that was so horrendous that it might as well have been a fanfiction written by an illiterate 5th grader and her pet goldfish.
And the fact that it's called "Love Never Dies"..... My God..... Just shoot me now!!!
I am now dreading the upcoming months of this year. Oh, how it pains my tender and Phantom-loving heart to see such a thing take place..... Why, Andrew?? WHY????
I am SO going to march around Broadway with picket signs when it comes out, lol.

And I`m putting a anger face on this because of the idea of the sequel not your picture!

Aw, thanks!
Good, I agree! But I guess I'm not as close-minded as before. To me, when this comes out (because I'm sure it will), it will simply be a non-canon sequel made into a musical... with awesome music that could possibly be a good soundtrack to own, but a terrible storyline. The only (and I mean ONLY) hope I have of absolutely liking it is if Andrew changes the plot line DRASTICALLY. And there's pretty much no hope in that. The main center to his plot line is that Erik and Christine have a child, and once that's gone, his whole framework for a sequel just blows up in his face. I don't think people are going to like it. But in this weird world, who knows? But I don't give a darn what the media says... if they say it's great, I'm still going with what my conscience tells me. So anyway... I guess I'm hoping for the best, but not surprised if it's going to be the worst!!

DarthxErik In reply to Seastar52 [2009-07-22 21:23:31 +0000 UTC]
um... first of all, I don't love the Phantom for his "HOTTNESS"... In the original novel he resembled a rotting corpse, and in many other versions, it's about his heart. I think the '04 movie portrayed him very well, but let's not forget the real reason we love him, right? I mean, goodness, if you're looking for another hot guy, just go stalk Gerard Butler and get off of Phantom...
Secondly, none of us are certain, but this sequel is setting out to BUTCHER the original plot and the basic soul of each character. Erik makes love to his Christine mannequin, Christine dies, they both had a child? It sounds a hundred times worse than most bad phanfiction i've seen out there... so we could be wrong about the plot (I do hope so, for Erik's dignity's sake!) but if we're even close, then it's going to be horrible to watch.
And thirdly, it's not going to be a movie. It's going to be a musical on stage, opening in New York, London and other cities worldwide. No Gerry!
