I beg of you, fellow phans in London: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT see this bloody musical when it opens in '09. If not for our sake, then, for Erik's sake...Don't let Andrew get a single penny from this little experiment of his. Hopefully his doteful mind will return to its former decency and respect for the character of Erik, whom he once cherished and admired.
I hope I'm not making too big of a deal out of this... but I truly find this all to be very sickening. I can't help getting very defensive when I see my favorite story and characters get butchered by the very man who helped to introduce the tale to me in the first place. Instead of degrading Erik and making himself look like a laughable mess, Andrew should quit making these musicals while he's ahead. He has my permission to retire and he can have my word that if he forgets all about this little business, so will I. No one will ever mention it again, and we'll all live as if it never happened.
Oh, how I hope he comes to his senses.
Still, if he doesn't....
... we phans will not lose heart. We know who Erik is-- whether it be the original psychotic genius from the novel, or the Erik created by Andrew himself; we won't see that image die-- and I will be sure to tell my kids about THAT Erik.
{I love Phantom to death. I have nothing against the movie, but I prefer the stage play and the original book by Gaston Leroux for many reasons. All of this to say: The plot for the sequel destroys the characters, and in many ways... doesn't make sense. The Phantom of the Opera is not a sappy story with a happy ending. It's a tragic tale about love and despair. A continuation after the dramatic ending to the movie/play wouldn't fit. It's like Jack coming back to life in a sequel to the Titanic. }
Again, perhaps I'm taking this all a little too far. Apologies. Please leave a comment....

No matter the storylien or anything, if it is the best voice in the world... it still would suck!

well-- bear in mind that the musical doesn't try to follow the book in that aspect. At least in the movie Erik doesn't seem to have died of a broken heart...
But yes, the sequel is a complete travesty of the novel, because supposedly Erik and Christine had a child... oh, it gets worse. Raoul is a drunk who squandered his fortune, meg is a sexy carnival singer, Erik OWNS the carnival/freak show (and is a successful business man)... ugh. Good thing it's only going to be a stage show (for now!)

Damn right! The story is perfect as it is now, it doesn't need any messing up with some awful sequel! I don't know too much about the plot, but from what I've heard it sounds horrible. Too bad that some people prefer money to anything else...
At least I won't be seeing it, since I live in Finland. And if I someday go to London, there's plenty of other musicals I want to see.

yes. although susan kay's book gave me ulcers for a week and a depressed feeling for over a month... it would certainly be better to base something off of Erik's past than Erik's future after Christine.
Really-- in Leroux's novel, he doesn't even LIVE after Christine. I thought ALW stayed true to that in a sense, even if in the movie he decided to let Erik live 'till his 80's. the point is still there: He'll always love/remember her... but he knows she could never have been his. He let her go. I always picture his future life after Christine (ALW) as a sad, yet, contented existence... where he learns to carry on and live despite his loss.
Phantom of Manhattan ruins all that. It also has holes in it's plot. Erik and Christine have a child? WHAT ON EARTH??

Well said! I think that book is so stupid!(To see my complete review of the book check my journal) I'm glad that so many people agree with me! What was ALW and Mr.F Forysth thinking making such a stupid book/sequel? I know that I will never see it, Erik in my mind is still Erik! Not some stupid Phantom of Manhattan!

I'd prefer that he made the Phantom of the Opera stage musical into a movie.
I haven't even read the first book from Frederik(?) Forsythe, but...it almost sounds worse than the "Phantom of the Paradise" remake coming out in 2010!
The originals are far better, sequels do nothing to help the original...they make it alot worse.

I certainly hope Andrew goes into his right mind to make a film to the '86 stage musical.
The Phantom of the Paradise remake should at least stay to the plot of the cast. Winslow Leach is supposedly going to be some goth or emo...(not that I detest it...), and...Phoenix is going to be...there isn't much to say about the potential cast. All I hope is that the movie will be good like the original in '74.

well, it stays so much from what I think is the heart of the story... and replaces it with hippie madness. Some of the songs were pretty cool... but... you know.
