Description
I beg of you, fellow phans in London: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT see this bloody musical when it opens in '09. If not for our sake, then, for Erik's sake...Don't let Andrew get a single penny from this little experiment of his. Hopefully his doteful mind will return to its former decency and respect for the character of Erik, whom he once cherished and admired.
I hope I'm not making too big of a deal out of this... but I truly find this all to be very sickening. I can't help getting very defensive when I see my favorite story and characters get butchered by the very man who helped to introduce the tale to me in the first place. Instead of degrading Erik and making himself look like a laughable mess, Andrew should quit making these musicals while he's ahead. He has my permission to retire and he can have my word that if he forgets all about this little business, so will I. No one will ever mention it again, and we'll all live as if it never happened.
Oh, how I hope he comes to his senses.
Still, if he doesn't....
... we phans will not lose heart. We know who Erik is-- whether it be the original psychotic genius from the novel, or the Erik created by Andrew himself; we won't see that image die-- and I will be sure to tell my kids about THAT Erik.
{I love Phantom to death. I have nothing against the movie, but I prefer the stage play and the original book by Gaston Leroux for many reasons. All of this to say: The plot for the sequel destroys the characters, and in many ways... doesn't make sense. The Phantom of the Opera is not a sappy story with a happy ending. It's a tragic tale about love and despair. A continuation after the dramatic ending to the movie/play wouldn't fit. It's like Jack coming back to life in a sequel to the Titanic. }

I would agree...also on the contrary. The songs from "Phantom of the Paradise" are good...and two of them are not.
It's unknown as to what elements shall be in the movie (in 2010), but I am positive that the cast will come together with those I've found.

You're absolutely right! This should have never got started in the first place. I'm curious to see what it will be like, but at the same time, I don't want to give ALW any money for this blunder. It's truly awful. Anywho, the way you drew Erik is really cute. XD

He's just trying to make more money out of the Phantom-hype, if you ask me
Just like with all the sequels

I was so outraged when I heard that there was going to be a sequel. And then in 2010, he's planning to launch a second movie! He's totally destroying it. It just proves the saying 'if something isn't broken don't fix it". It's like people have this obsession with having to change everything.. classics are meant to be classics, not tampered with and repackaged into another money-making disaster. It's happened to most of the disney classics already, and we can see how THOSE turned out.
GAAH. hehe yes my rant is over now...

really? I heard about that. I'm sure if a movie comes out, i'll see it, own it eventually, but perhaps not. I really really REALLY hate the idea of a sequel... and the plot is just creepy. Most chances... I'll despise it forever.

Yes! Especially the whole thing with the robotic Christine..eee... total character wreckage crash and burn.
It's just the original is so beautiful, an absolute masterpiece.. I don't understand. I might have to see the movie, put I'm pretty sure I won't pay to see the sequel on stage when I could spend it to see the first again. Ha..
Yay! Absolute despisement forevah!
I'm just hoping it won't affect my views of the original ALW version after the sequel comes out. It would be an absolute nightmare. And there are people who hated the ALW version to begin with, so they won't even give a hoot! hehe..

DarthxErik In reply to Sierryberry [2009-01-11 00:37:27 +0000 UTC]
exactly. I'd rather see the original on stage again any day.
I'm sure it won't. I mean, it may affect the view people have on the creators, such as ALW. But the story of the Phantom itself? It's so timeless and known, that I hardly think it'll get damaged beyond repair. If anything, the show will flop and go along with all the other phantom flops in history.
Yes, it's true. Some people hate the ALW version... I don't. I seriously can't imagine liking phantom were it not for ALW's version. It's what started it all for me. So I sincerely care in a way. What bothers me is just the fact that someone could even twist Erik's character in such a way. It disturbs the inmost parts of my soul.

Yeah, I totally get what you're saying. I will have lost much respect for ALW after this one. Well, hopefully, that's all that it will become, a flop... unless, miraculously, he manages to redo the sequel in a way that will NOT make a difference to any of the characters, and stays true to the whole Phantom ideal. From what I've heard, it probably isn't possible.. but we can always hope, right?
Yes the 2004 movie is what inspired it all for me. Later, I read the book and I love Leroux's Phantom of the Opera too and the stage version. Whatever he may do afterwards, at least the original will always have a place in my heart haha! And we can go on believing that there never WAS a sequel. That the story ends as it was meant to.

I absolutelly agree, that book was a... sh*t. All the stupid awful and bad things that could happen to Erik are on it!!!!Doesn't matter what the people says, Forsyth didn't understand Erik, and the musical will be one that Iill never suport.

You know, ALW would have probably been better off adapting Susan Kay's novel up until the Opera house, over Phantom of Manhattan, but then that 2004 movie kinda screwed up on the whole Erik's history.

yah.... i think a prequel idea would be much better. after christine is gone, there's just no way to do anything else. Whether you're thinking about it through the lenses of the book or the 04 movie, there's just really nothing more to tell. end of story.

aww... I honestly think the sequel should get a chance. And I mean, I've read the plot, and I don't like it, yet I'm not going to say it's horrible without first watching it ^^
I mean, to someone who's deeply in love with the book, the first musical could have been just as traumatizing... and PotO had too many adaptations, both good and bad, for me to rule out the chance to see another more.
Cute!!!!

He looks so sweet and...traumatized.
ALW should be kidnapped to prevent disastrous sequels...but I suppose it's too late now. It seems like his cat erasing the whole score off his fancy piano couldn't hold it back long enough.
I think the music of the POTO musical is great (I saw it in Bristol when I was about 6ish and I still remember some of it), and although the musical itself is a bit dramatic to be entirely true-to-life, it makes a brilliant tragedy. And tragedies should be left alone, not churned out into a sequel! I think Webber's counting on the sequel being as great a success as the first musical...well, I don't think it'll happen!

Well cute
The sequel looks like a load of fuzz. I wouldn't see it. Sequels made by the same people who made the original are usually bad enough. Sequels based on fanfictions are, it cannot be denied, nothing more than money-making. So I won't be seeing it either (though that's partly out of laziness).
