Description
I beg of you, fellow phans in London: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT see this bloody musical when it opens in '09. If not for our sake, then, for Erik's sake...Don't let Andrew get a single penny from this little experiment of his. Hopefully his doteful mind will return to its former decency and respect for the character of Erik, whom he once cherished and admired.
I hope I'm not making too big of a deal out of this... but I truly find this all to be very sickening. I can't help getting very defensive when I see my favorite story and characters get butchered by the very man who helped to introduce the tale to me in the first place. Instead of degrading Erik and making himself look like a laughable mess, Andrew should quit making these musicals while he's ahead. He has my permission to retire and he can have my word that if he forgets all about this little business, so will I. No one will ever mention it again, and we'll all live as if it never happened.
Oh, how I hope he comes to his senses.
Still, if he doesn't....
... we phans will not lose heart. We know who Erik is-- whether it be the original psychotic genius from the novel, or the Erik created by Andrew himself; we won't see that image die-- and I will be sure to tell my kids about THAT Erik.
{I love Phantom to death. I have nothing against the movie, but I prefer the stage play and the original book by Gaston Leroux for many reasons. All of this to say: The plot for the sequel destroys the characters, and in many ways... doesn't make sense. The Phantom of the Opera is not a sappy story with a happy ending. It's a tragic tale about love and despair. A continuation after the dramatic ending to the movie/play wouldn't fit. It's like Jack coming back to life in a sequel to the Titanic. }

What kind of horror is ALW leading him into? The ending just plainly states that there could NOT be a sequel!
...unless it was phan made and it didn't have a Mary Sue in it.
I betcha Erik and Leroux want to come back to life to teach ALW a lesson. I'd help them >D

GAH. Lloyd Webber's finally going senile. *bangs head against wall*
Although if it is any consolation, the title was changed from "Once Upon Another Time" to "Love Never Dies"...which I personally think sounds like the title of a sappy romance novel...but eh.
A sequel by any other name would be just as sh*tty.

O____o??
Sweet Mother of.... are they really gonna make a PotO sequel?? And I thought that since making sequel of Grease and three parts of Highschool Musical composers and libretto writers have learned some lesson.... I only hope that they won't be making sequel of Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar. -_-'

believe me, it's no longer a rumor. and if you read the premise of the story... it's just-- ughhhh!!! -shudders-
-agreeing-
I did hear they're making a remake of the JC superstar movie in 2010. Same year they're making Wicked into a movie. Sure hope they stay true to the original stuff there...

Heh... I heard that this "Phantom..." sequel is based on this crappy book called "The Phantom of Manhattan" - which can only mean that it will be a totall disaster. -_-'
But I also heard a rumour that Webber was forced to write the musical all over again, because his cat jumped onto the computer keyboard and the whole text was deleted (yay for the kitty! ).
I'd love to see Wicked turned into movie as well as this remake of Jesus Christ Superstar - I don't think we have to worry that they will screw up anything. So far the movie versions of the musicals that I've seen turned out pretty decent, well maybee except the "Phantom..." - it was good, but I think the movie's missing something (that's just my opinion)...

DarthxErik In reply to suzie-chan [2008-11-19 18:42:53 +0000 UTC]
yes. i read it and it wasn't very good. at all.
and i think that "cat rumor" has a video to back it up. Andrew spoke about it on a video blog of his...
yah! I thought the remake of JC superstar in the 90's was horrid. Didn't stay true to the original spirit of the music or anything. so... if they're going to remake it AGAIN maybe it'll be a lot like the older one, only... better? I sure hope so. but you can't beat ted neeley.
oh i agree. I really really like the Phantom movie, but watching it alone won't give you the full package. The stage play is so much better in many ways, and so is the book. So, i think the movie is an awesome place to start, but if you like it enough, you should get into other versions.

You know, there are plenty of people who feel the same way about the 2004 movie. (Not me, though.)
I don't like the idea of a sequel (Erik is DEAD) and don't like the story the sequel is based on.
I AM curious about it, but this is one of those times when I'll let the critics and other phans decide for me. If people are pleasantly surprised I might go for it, but I'm not holding my breath.
I suspect there aren't nearly as many "phans" as we'd like to believe, and that the average theatergoer doesn't care as deeply for the characters as we do. If ALW does a good job entertaining them, it won't matter how many boycotts are called for.
I'm sure curiosity - even amongst phans - will pad attendance numbers in the beginning. It remains to be seen what happens after that.

I know. I found that out long after I fell in love with the movie and all else that followed! So, neither do I. I could never *dislike* the movie. Ever.
hm. yes. you're making a lot of sense here... I agree with ya. That's just too bad...
Those average theater-goers are who I am concerned about! They'll walk outta there and think THAT'S what the first Phantom musical was like... and... ugh.
Let's hope it flops just like Grease 2.

Mominator In reply to DarthxErik [2008-11-19 18:04:50 +0000 UTC]
The movie was not my first exposure to PotO. I'd actually seen the stageplay (in Hollywood!) around '98 or '99, but was SO underwhelmed by the experience (nosebleed seats, actors I'd never heard of, unfamiliarity with some of the music) that when the movie came around I couldn't even remember how the story ended.
I had even read the book after seeing the play and STILL could not remember how it ended.
Sad, isn't it.
But the movie changed all that.
It really irritates me when people rant about how awful the movie was, how awful the actors were, how awful the singing was. I don't mind complaints (I thought Gerry's singing was disappointing the first time I heard it), but I think most of the complainers were just pi**ed it didn't star Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, and were determined to not like it even before seeing it.
Oh well, maybe that's how the rest of us once the sequel comes out. Yeah, we can whine about the intransigence of others, but not our own.

If I've said it once I'll say it again ALW has lost his mind. The book Phantom of Manhattan by Frederick Forsyth was crap the musical will be crap and the movie fallowing the last movie will be crap. This is why I watch Yeston and Kopit's Phantom. Oy Gaston Leroux is rolling in his grave and so is Erik, makes me sick. Very cute poster though

...and I agree! man. I read the book too... and there was absolutely nothing redeemable about it... the plot is just plain BLAND and doesn't provide anything new... if anything, it completely makes you question the characters' original motives in the first musical.
HE'S MAKING A SEQUEL FILM OUT OF THIS?!? Please, God... NO!!
Oooh Yeston/Kopit's Phantom is wonderfully amazing. Are you referring to the musical or the tv series? I immensely enjoy both of them. ^_^

I do too. That was my original motive in making this. Maybe when I visit London, I'll dump them from a plane...
yes. it was.
what proves that the material was worthless was the fact that my friend's mom liked reading the book. She *hates* Phantom with a burning passion. She told me the movie was the worst movie she'd ever seen, and that the music made her want to vomit. And she *likes* Phantom of Manhattan????
That should say something....

Completely agree.
When I first heard that there might possibly a sequel... I was sort of willing to hear it out. I thought it could potentially ruin the magic of the original, but I was interested to see what Andrew would do with it. After all, he does write lovely music.
And then... well, first, he titled it. Woe.
Second, it's based on The Phantom of Manhattan, if I'm not mistaken, which is possibly one of the worst sequels he could have picked. I won't crack that one open just because of the summary. It ruins everything.
Third, the synopsis. Like, if someone tried to tell the most sick, twisted, OOC story they possibly could, it can't be worse than that synopsis. It's like they used completely different characters and then they just slapped a POTO label on it.
I was against it for a while, but the automaton was what got me. I mean, really. Of all the perverted... GAH. I even got mad when I watched the Robert Englund movie and Erik pays for a prostitute. It's just so ridiculously out of character that I can barely stand it. Somewhere, Erik is rolling in his grave... and tightening his catgut.
