Description
Halloween Countdown #7Despite my well-known enmity toward surly kitten-huffer Jhonen Vasquez, I still have to admit that Invader ZIM and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac are some of cartoon-dom's greatest villains. If only they could have been created by someone who knew what he was doing. Nevertheless, Zim and Nny make it to number seven in my countdown as that number bears a certain relevance to Johnny. Those of you who've read the comic will know what I'm referring to. Those of you who haven't aren't really missing much.
By the looks of things, something bad is probably about to happen. I wonder which of the two will win this contest of mind and mayhem? Either way, we'll be down one psychotic maniac, so who really wins? Us, the people! Now is the time for glorious Era of United Workers!

Ugh. I know what you mean, sadly. D:
I met him in person once, at an autograph signing, and I gave him a comic that I had made for him and he just put it to the side, saying, "...oh, I'll read it later."
And the next day he posted in his blog that being there was one of the worst experiences of his life.

Beautiful work!
Well, I know this is an old topic you've all started, but I want to toss in my two cents:
I met Jhonen before I got to know his work. We met at a convention. Personally, he was very nice to me. Of course I could easily pick up upon the pestimistic and irrate attitude he seems to have for people and life in general, but that is just how he is.
I enjoy his work very much. Obviously, as Johnny C. has even stated to the survey man, books are sheerly here for entertainment. It is the people who base themselves and their moral judgement upon entertainment who are the idiots. I can appreciate Jhonen's understanding for this as he is watching pathetic, goth-wannabe fans do this all the time.
Furthermore, I can't deny the obvious fact that Jhonen most likely is very grateful for his fans, but feel as though his blunt disgust for some of them is merely a method to his madness. Surely this could be percieved in the same way as a girl playing hard-to-get and seeing if the tail-wagging boy will follow.
Some fans like the cynasism, and surprisingly it seems a lot of fans enjoy his hatred of them. It is as though the fans feel connected (even if slightly) by his emotional disapproval of them. Of course, no fan ever thinks they're one of the fans he hates, so I've noticed them try extra hard to make him like them in an attempt to feel special! Little do they know that they are just making him dislike them even more by attempting to wiggle into his good books.
It really is a love-hate relationship. Perhaps that image is what Jhonen feels he has going for him (pissed off cartoonist who draws random/dark stuff). Either way, I personally don't like (and never have) seen Jhonen as a famous cartoonist. Maybe it doesn't make one bit of difference, but since I met him before I knew his work...to me, he's just Jhonen the pissed off, cynical, arrogant, socially accepted reject who would enjoy nothing more than to have his fans want to know his work rather than want to know him. He's just a closed up person, so nobody can expect him to be happy with being prodded by a stick to devulge his every personal detail!
Just my opinion.

I truly appreciate your in-depth comment and the fact that you managed to communicate your own opinion intellectually without it degrading into "d00d u r so ghey" unlike many other people who have argued against my distaste for Jhonen Vasquez. Unfortunately, I'm feeling too tired and sick at the moment to entirely offer proper rhetoric in response. I'll just leave it at the fact that I see Mr. Vasquez as someone with some serious psychological and spiritual problems that he needs to seek help with before they destroy his life or the lives of others. I enjoy his work, but I have to admit it could also be worlds better.
As for my personal vendetta against him... *shrugs* It's fun to have a rival. Hehehe.

Haha! I agree. I think he does have some problems to work out. His work could be better, and he'll agree with that one. He admits that he's the laziest SOB out there, and I believe him!
It tends to show in his work when he's being lazy (a good example being the dog in "Squee").
I agree with your distaste for him. Just like everyone out there, you can't win 'em all and you can't please everyone. I appreciate your honesty and I am relieved that you do not cut down but rather enjoy his work regardless of his own personality. More oft than not, I see individuals insult his work just because they don't like him. For me, it is perfectly fine and normal to not like his work if it just isn't a person's thing, but I can not stand it when people base their dislikes upon the personality of the author or artist.
Thank you for providing me with a pleasent and intellectual debate! So hard to find lately.

Oh, trust me. I DO cut him down, but that's just because it's so darn fun! *snickers* I'm a fan of his art. Just not of him.

He enjoys that actually.
Get's a real laugh out of it, but so long as you're both enjoying poking at each other, then I'll enjoy the entertainment.

Haha, love this picture. Love how ginormously blown out of proportion everything is, and the coloring too.

I wanted to match the sickly, uncomfortable feeling of Jhonen's drawings, thus all of the upsetting colors and weird angles.

Superb! Very Jhonen-esque, as well as featuring your own little flairs here and there.
This reminds me, I really gotta watch more Zim...my local Best Buy has the complete series box set, so maybe I oughta look into picking it up. My only gripe is that the show was so hit-or-miss - the good episodes were great, but the bad ones couldn't really be saved.

You can just tell something so bad is going to happen in this scenario, that by some happenstance poor Todd and a very apathetic Senor Diablo, and probably Dib will get involved. Good job! By the way, the kitten-huffing reference reminded me o' somethin'. Go here, and prepare to shake from mirth, fear, and disgust! All at once! [link]

Hah. Shows what I know. I thought that other guy was Dib.
When I was in Canada earlier this year I was shown the first series of Zim and I did rather enjoy it, especially Zim himself. Good show!

Several theories abound about a connection between Dib and Nny. Which is weird since one episode clearly shows that Johnny the Homicidal Maniac is just a comic book in Zim's world.
Anyway, yes, Invader Zim is a very funny cartoon. Dib's my favorite, personally.

His die-hards are obnoxious and I do share that disdain for them as well. As for casual fans like you and I, there's no denying that Jhonen's creations are entertaining. When it comes to Mr. Vasquez himself, having spoken with him personally and having met several other people who've had the same experience, I'm simply not fond of his arrogant nature and desire to put down everyone around him. Seems a pretty hypocritical attitude for someone who goes on about how he was supposedly picked on all through childhood.

Hardly an ideal role model for up-and-coming comic artists/writers, really. I mean, I love his work, and he can seem pretty cool, but that arrogant nature I've heard of from you and some others sounds hardly redeeming. But then again, his extra work in Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors shows that maybe, almost certainly, his arrogance and putting folks down may stem from being fed up with his sycophantic UBER-fans. It doesn't mean he should be a snark, but I think we all know how agonizingly irritating his fans can be, and we can only imagine what he must've had to put up with.

From the sounds of it, he's always been an ass, though. I think his creepy fans are karmic retribution.
