Description
It was an usually hot day for this early in the year. This was the time for cool rains to bring about the spring flowers, not for unbearable and oppressive heat. Though, that's not to say that they hadn't had rain, and that there wasn't already flowers popping up, as it had and there were. The horses just thought that it shouldn't feel this 'summery' so soon.
The herd had taken refuge from the heat, and the swarms of flies, near the lake. Most of the herd had already taken a dip and were now grazing in the trees that surrounded the body of water. The flies were still terrible, but no one was willing to expose themselves to the harsh rays in the open when there was only a slight wind. Instead, a couple of the horses had paired up and stood opposite each other, tails flicking constantly.
And yet, there was one soul among them that did want to go out into the open, but for fun instead of food. Ziva trotted through the lakeshore, leaving swirls of mud in her wake, though she'd decided she would much rather be racing through the sunny field. Racing wasn't as fun without an opponent to race against. I mean, how do you know if you're actually fast if all you race is your own shadow? No, it just would not do.
Ziva scanned the trees, watching the herd as they slowly moved through the shady woods. Although she knew most were reluctant to leave the trees, Ziva decided that it couldn't hurt to try to convince someone to come out and play. So, the red filly left the water and began her search for a contender.
She started with the obvious choice of her siblings. Neither Finn nor Chloe could be convinced that playing out in the sun would be more fun than in the shade, so Ziva moved on. Her father also declined the offer, and he told her that she would have to be accompanied by an adult, as the area was frequented by other herds. Though Ziva tried to argue, her father made it clear that he would not budge on the added stipulation. Ziva pouted as she walked away from her dad, not ready to give up despite the low odds her convincing one of the adults to go with her.
Though, as a spotted body passed by her on his way down to the water for a drink, the filly realized that all was not lost.
“Hey, Damon! You're an adult now, right?” Ziva asked excitedly. She pranced up to him, grinning widely.
Damon swallowed his mouthful of water, lifting his head and turning to look at his 'niece'. “Uhh, I guess so, why?” He had to stop and think about it for a moment. The realization reminded him of something he'd been trying to avoid thinking about for a while now. He was indeed an adult, and at his age most young stallions would have already left their family herd to start their own or joined up with a bachelor group. Damon had been putting it off, and Ajax hadn't made a move to make him go, so he remained with them.
“Come with me!” Ziva tugged on his mane playfully before turning and running off.
Damon rolled his eyes and followed her. He cast a glance at Ajax, nodding at him to assure him he'd look after the mischievous filly. Ajax smirked at him and turned away to rid himself of a biting insect. Clearly, Ajax had no worries about Damon stealing his daughters. Heck, Damon reckoned that Ajax could leave for a week and return without worrying that Damon had touched any of his mares. While Damon appreciated the level of trust the stallion had in him, he was worried that the longer he stayed the more likely he would be to betray him.
“Alright, we're here, what did you want to show me?” Damon asked, trying to mask the exacerbation in his tone. It was not the first time the filly had dragged him to see something she claimed was 'cool' or 'weird', though most turned out to be rather boring. He did not have high expectations.
“Nothing. Now come run with me!” Ziva giggled as she took off.
Damon just stood there and stared with a befuddled expression on his face. “Wait, you dragged me out here for nothing?” He asked incredulously.
Ziva came back around, stopping abruptly before him, “No, I brought you out here so I could challenge you to a race!” She announced excitedly.
“Why me? Why not the twins?” Damon asked.
Ziva groaned dramatically, “Because they're always like 'if my twin isn't coming then I'm not either', it's so annoying.”
Damon sighed heavily, continuing to question her, “Why don't you just play in the lake where it's cooler? Why do you want to run around in the sun when it's so hot?”
“Because it's beautiful out, I mean, look at it out here! Don't you love the way the light makes everything glow? The way the grass looks when the wind blows, almost like there are waves on land? The smell of the warm air and the flowers...” Ziva seemed to get lost in her own thoughts as she looked around, a content smile on her face.
Damon couldn't help but stare at her. She looked so much like her mother in that moment. Proud, confident, beau- He shook himself, looking away sharply. What the hell was he thinking? This was his sister's daughter! Your adopted sister's daughter. She's a weanling! She is, but Estraya isn't... Damon shook his head more forcefully this time to dislodge the thought.
His actions attracted the filly's attention, and she questioned it, “What are you doing?”
Damon blinked, having to think up an excuse quickly, “Uhh, a fly just flew into my face.”
Ziva looked at him funny for a moment, but seemed to shrug it off, “Anyways, come'on! Let's have a race!”
Damon sighed, but conceded, “Alright, alright. But just a quick one, cause it's hot out and we don't want to get overheated.” A run was just the thing to clear his mind. Besides, it was probably one of the last times he would do something like this with her.
“Yes! Okay, let's race to... that dead tree over there and back here. Best two out of three, winner gets the title of race champion!” Ziva said excitedly. She moved to stand beside Damon near the finish line marker – a big rock. “Ready to eat my dust?” She asked with a big grin.
Damon smirked back, “After you eat my tail.”
Ziva snorted in response. “Ok, ready... set go!” She said quickly, bolting before the words finished leaving her mouth.
“Hey!” Damon shouted as he chased after her. “That's cheating!”
“All's fair in love and war!” She countered. Ziva sped up even more as she saw Damon starting to catch up.
“W-what?! This is neither!” Damon pointed out as he tried to regain the head start she had on him.

Artist Notes:
-sniffle- My little spotted baby is all growed up! Poor Damon, he is so conflicted about leaving. Mainly because somewhere along the way he fell in love with his big sister (who is not actually his sister). He doesn't know what to do about it, so he's just pushed it all down. But now he can't really run from it anymore.
Anyways, this was a thing. I feel bad for the twins as I made such a quickie art of them and then did this for these two. Then again, this is the first time in a long while that I've drawn Damon. With good reason. Holy F- SPOTS. And spots at an angle. This is why Damon will not be staying. I honestly just cannot be arsed to deal with so many spots.
With this image, I had told myself to 'keep it simple'. I knew it was gonna be more detailed than the twins' aging art, but this just kinda kept going. The background here is completely different from the one I'd sketched. I originally had them going through the water along the lake's shore, but I found the angle they were running at conflicted with what I had envisioned. This appeared instead. I... like it? I think. Idk, I've been up all night and need sleep lol.
