Just as Odo made it from the rope onto the back of the prykon which had carried Asterith away, another beast appeared out of the dark night with jaws open for the attack. The knight could not be sure if it was a third monster, or the first, which had returned to trouble him though he had thought it slain. In any event it has his arm in its taloned grip almost as soon as he was aware of its presence.
---
Up to the rope he dragged himself
onto the Prykon's back,
When one more of these hell-born fiends
closed in for the attack.
Another beast of this fell breed-
vilest of things that fly;
(Was it another, or the first
which had refused to die?)
