Description
Dragon: "Ah, welcome to my domain, brave hero! I see you have managed to get past the fire breathing piranhas in the river, the horrific ogre at the foot of the mountain, and you even found your way through the Valley of Mist. And now, your goal would be my treasure chamber, of course. Well, I'm afraid I can't let you through the gate that easily."Hero: "Don't say it - I'll have to slay you to get past, right?"
Dragon: "Slay me? What a ridiculous thing to do. No, you just have to answer a question. Give me the correct answer, and I'll let you enter. I will not let you go anywhere until you succeed."
Hero: "Uhm, alright. What's the question then?"
Dragon: "The question is: What must you do to get to my treasure chamber?"
Hero: "Let's see... I must give you a rare stone that is only found somewhere far away, find you a damsel in distress, or I must kill the annoying dwarf that keeps bugging you every spring."
Dragon: "No, no and no. Come on, keep trying....."
...
Two weeks later, and one corpse richer, the dragon once again wondered why, just WHY couldn't any of them simply answer: "I must walk through the gate."???
Just a silly little story I came up with while drawing a typical fantasy scenario. I don't think dragons are evil, they just have different ways of entertaining themselves. Riddles are a very fun way to make time pass!
I got a bunch of new pencils for Christmas, as well as drawing paper. This is drawn on ecological drawing paper, and it is rougher than what I'm used to. Detailing was a little difficult, but still very fun.
Medium: Pencils (3H, H, B, 3B, 6B)
Size: A4
Time: I believe it took about 15-20 hours.
Date: January 6, 2011. First picture this year!

I agree that dragons are similar to humans that they are a balance between good and evil creatures who can be our protectors in the Arthurian legends and our destructive they represent just all the good and evil, purity and paganism, wisdom or contemptand goodness or cruelty, fertility or destruction or oppression compassion, generosity or greed, kindness or malice, our protection and our destruction so I think that they are right and wrong at the same time for me it is a symbol of courage something that allows us to go head when life does not offer us her best but also something that we must overcome to move on our own path. I read a lot of fantasy book or dragons represented just good or evil see both. DragonsRiders of Pern, DragonHeart, Temeraire, Inheritance, Wings of Fire, Dunjeons and Dragons, Warhammer, Warcraft, The Cycle of Earthsea, The Age of Fire, The Emeraud Knights, The Fire Within, The Pit Dragon Chronicles, The Last Dragon Chronicle. .. besides Tolkien never even considered dragons as evil as it was passionate about Arthurian legend and these legends are symbolized dragons as good creature in his book Gilles Ham is another book of the Earth Middle-we are shown a Hobbit taming a dragon to overthrow a tyrannical king, one of the dragons that we do not know if he is alive or dead in Middle-earth was good but lives in the depths of the oceans. There is also a legend on which one could make a movie or book is The Last Night of the Dragons a world where magic is owned by creatures endowed with great wisdom, or a willingness dragons and the sorcièrres is made war and dragons were created with humans an unknown alliance of the bravest men deadly dragons somehow or dragons powers be transferred to humans, but this alliance was dissolved because of the arrogance of some always demanding more power and sometimes for obscure purposes, witches wanted to be unique and powerful magical creatures of the world and destroyed the dragon city the city that only exist in heaven one to survive and must rebuild the alliance between humans and dragons because humans never survivreront magic witches. I li also a lot of fiction is on site as Ishara of The Dragon, Dragon! Nordics x Dragon! Reader, Norway x Reader always with dragons, I am always passionate about dragons, fairies, phoenix, unicorns, griffins.

I looks like you've put some thought into what dragons are Indeed, I agree that dragons aren't necessarily good or evil, and that is what can make them such interesting characters. There's a ton of great stories about dragons to be found, pretty much all of them having a different view of how they should be, something I enjoy a lot. Too bad I don't really have that much time for reading anymore. Oh well, that just means more time for drawing, I guess

Do you scribble so little that it looks smooth, or do you swipe the pencil?

Manweri In reply to CrisisHalfPrincess [2014-11-03 11:30:37 +0000 UTC]
I smudged the pencil a little bit with a blending stump to make it look smoother, though there's also a great deal of scribbling going on here

Great! That's how I always imagined dragons - not as the senslessly brutal monsters but more like the powerful intelligent art and beauty-lovers wth a faible for riddles and poetry That matches the fact that they collect beautiful treasure and are able to cast magic way better than using them as soulless hero-slayers.
Very well done piece. I see I have a long way to go with my pencil skills but I'm glad that you motivated me with this to reach your level .. maybe .. in some time^^
Thank you!

Thank you! We seem to share the same view of dragons then - I've always imagined most of them as rather sophisticated creatures
And the only advice I can think of when it comes to detailed pencil work like this, is to have a lot of patience, and to remember to keep an extra sheet of paper between your drawing hand and the drawing itself (to avoid smudging)

You're welcome!
Thank you for the nice advice! Since I'm a left-handed person I always have problems with smudging To avoid it I hardly trained myself to work from the right to the left side of a sheet of paper - what of course doesn't work perfectly ... But putting an extra sheet is of course far more elegant and easier So this helps me a lot - Thank you! Β

This is a great picture, I already know this was a quarrelsome dragon before reading the description!
The answer might be "I must answer your question correctly AND go past the door", I think. Because he wouldn't let him pass until he does.
I agree with the laughing skeleton on the bottom-right corner.
