Description
Full Tyrant makeup and suit as seen in Resident Evil Extinction. Too bad he was only in the film for a few minutes. Why does that always happen?Related content

Y'know I kinda pity the makeup artists that spent hours on this guy only to see he only shows up for 10 minutes or so on screen.

Killer stuff, Dave. His expression seems as if someone showed him a mirror.
Always nice to see your work. Now...more!

By the way sometimes you take these photos into PhotoShop and you do an Auto levels adjustment Ctrl+Shift+L and you will get the normal lighting conditions. I do that a lot with these photos to see them in the original Glory.

The worse part is after you spend days and months designing the perfect paint scheme and doing multiple suits of the identical paint scheme, approved by the director and they fucking light it with a candle. Then in post production they dimmed the shit out with that Photoshop for editors. Oh yeah not to mention they put a color layer over everything which makes everything a monotone color. You lucky they didn't cover it with blood effects and drench your nice paint job in sugar syrup.

Haha. No I'm surrounded by bitter Movie FX people who are my friends. LOL
But yeah i did work for short time in a production house who wanted me to paint a bright blue, green creature that will be the same color as the green or blue backgrounds for the special effects. which means nothing will show up.

Woooah.. Now that`s a tad scary! but yet awesome! The more I study it, the less creepy it gets
Too bad it got so little screen time!

That's alright, I'm used to it. Happens all the time.
One topic of interest..... The guy wearing this is my very good friend Brian Steel who (you probably know of already) played Wink, Fragglewump and Cathedral Head in Hellboy 2.

I bet! And you did a great job on this! Even though it does look a bit scary, I found myself sitting about 5 inches from my monitor, studying it, hihihi
Oh, him I know! He`s sort of a legend when it comes to monster suits! I`m impressed by how he managed move around so well in (the very huge) Wink suit. Wink himself was so incredibly well made!

Thanks again. Brian is one of the most well known suit performers around. We worked together on his first suit gig The Relic and we've been working together and been great friends ever since. Him and Doug Jones are the best guys to work with.
Brian trained very hard to pull off Wink, that suit was incredibly heavy on him, but the guy never complains which is why I love working with him.

That is so nice! He sure is talented. Wink kinda blew me away! Doug Jones is also wonderful actor. He brings so much life to the creatures he plays! Can`t imagine how it`s like running around with these crazy suits on stilts, with limited eyesight, fake arms etc, filled with animatronics!

I've done that a few times and it gets incredibly hot in there. With the servos running in there right by your head getting hotter and hotter, can be just plain awful.

I`m definitely adding this to my "to watch" list!

Ewwww....
That seems to be a recurring theme among movie sculptors. I've seen at least 8 different completed monsters and other things(including yours) that people made that ended up being in the film for only a few minutes or less, and sometimes get annexed from the movie entirely.
Like in the live-action Peter Pan movie from a few years ago, they made a massive animatronic crocodile head. This thing had so many high power hydraulics, it could have picked someone up off the ground and thrown them across the room! In the end, you only got to see the head for maybe 20 seconds and it was sleeping. Pffftt.

Sorry, I should have said this before.
I've learned about movie puppetry(that's what you'd call it?) from investigating online, "making-of" and "how they did that" specials, books and other people on DA.

Unfortunately, I am not in the business. I'd like to be but I'm not.
I learned about the crocodile thing at a special traveling exhibit that was all about movie monsters and puppetry. The crocodile(or at least its eye and tail, unfortunately they didn't have the actual head there) was one of the exhibits and they had a video on how they made it.
I certainly would have liked to work on it. That would have been awesome!

Doing this kind of work for film is a bit frustrating these days. Jobs don't last as long as they used to and sometimes you don't know what or when your next job is going to be. However, on some rare occasions, you get to work on something special that will end up being a great memory for you and for others who appreciate the work you did. It has its ups and downs like everything else, but the work just isn't steady all the time.

I can imagine, especially since so many movies have been moving to CGI now, even though it doesn't look nearly as good.
How do you choose your work? Or do you choose, is it a take what you can get sort of thing?
Because I really don't think I would have enjoyed working on something like this(no offense, it's just pretty groady for my taste).

Sometimes it is a take what you can get situation, like this one was. Sometimes it depends on where I'm working at the time and we can go from one project to another. I prefer the latter.

Wishing that I was working again. I do have many personal projects that I try to work on when I'm unemployed, sometimes take on a commission here and there. If I'm out of work after about 2 or 3 weeks then I start to get depressed, but this year I've given myself a few goals to reach. I have 2 art pieces that will be entered in a gallery showing near the end of the year so I do have my work cut out for me. They will be originals and pretty elaborate.
