From what I know, it was planned that Kirk and his crew get the Excelsior instead of a new Enterprise, but test audiences reacted so negaively that the filmmakers came up with the concept of the Enterprise Heritage, beginning with the A.

Love how they teased ending up on the Excelsior only to have the brand new Enterprise come up instead

"Let's see what she can do"

The scriptwriters originally wanted to give the Excelsior to the crew but massive fan mailing made them change their minds and came up with the idea of the NCC-1701-XXX lineage.

Made the D's look shoddy. The Enterprise-E's bridge was better reminded me of the original, since the E has a retro look to it .

I loved the A's bridge in TUC. It was a nice bleding between the mordern LCARS style and the original TOS style with all the real two-position switches and stuff...

ArgosKear In reply to davemetlesits [2008-06-29 23:48:42 +0000 UTC]

The A's was good looking in TUC, but still like the E's bridge just little better. Dave, have you seen Star Trek: the animated series? The series takes place in the first five year mission that Kirk has aboard the Enterprise. Nearly everyone is on board except for Chekov. On youtube I seen several episodes:
The Slaver Weapon(Spock, Sulu, and Uhura stopping an hostile alien race from getting the ultimate weapon.)
The Counter-Clock Indent ( Where the Enterprise and crew travel to a universe where time flows in reverse)
The Practical Joker ( Enterprise travels through an energy field and computer starts to pull practical jokes on the crew and first appearance of the holodeck in Trek mythos)

ArgosKear In reply to davemetlesits [2008-06-30 22:43:45 +0000 UTC]

ST:TAS was a good show for limited animation that Filmation used. The Great bird of the Galaxy doesn't except TAS as part of his canon. The show won Emmy for best children program. The series ran for 22 episodes. The show created two characters M'ress(Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, a Catitian she was Uhura's replacement when she was not a duty, and Arex(James Doohan), an Edosian, he was unique because he three arms and legs. Being animated TAS a huge advantage over TOS because as cartoon the show had no budgetary constraints as TOS did.
