I've emailed the good Madman as there are a few errant vertices after the conversion that I can't find in blender or tag in blender prior to vrml export. If your wondering why I'm not using .lwo export is because while exporting exerything very prettily there is no object hierarchy at all just 400 plus subcomponents untagged and unbound, great fun if your doing a ship explosion but not much good if you just have too keep shifting the camera to get a still.

When I exported the ship to .obj and loaded it in Max, it looked like a major mess. All I had to do was applying the Smooth modifier to all objects.
