Description
Another in the "Little Man: Phears, Phobias and Phealings" series.Depression is something that at one time or another hits most of us. Some people suffer forever with it. About a year ago a friend was perscribed as Manic. Didn't come as a huge surprise but it still hurt.
With him in mind, I shot this. He tried to explain to me once how much despair he felt when he was on the down slide. One of the analogies he used was "I feel like I am trying to crawl out of a toilet". That one stuck with me...
I don't remember much about the lighting so it must have been something as simple as one flash. The DOF is the important part here. All I wanted was the head. I wanted focus to be purely on the head making eye contact with the viewer. Some might want more. I can understand it but I like it shallow...
Enjoy... One more after this. There are other images in the series but this is all I am gonna post here...
Dave

I've seen a lot of pictures with those little mannequins. Mostly they are either neutral or trying to be funny (sometimes successfully). This is the first I've seen that has real emotion in it.

True art. I'm sure we can all relate this this at times, sadly.

"Depression hurts. Who does depression hurt? Your friends. Your family. Your dog. And apparently your plumber. God knows what he'll say when he finds out you flushed a perfectly good reference doll just because you couldn't say 'Fuck it, life isn't all that bad'."

Funny, I was just thinking to myself about my depression and how I felt like flushing it down the toilet...this is really awesome and it speaks volumes really..

Once you have depression it's there forever, weather you feel it at those years or not. This pic explains everything someone may feel with it, good job.

Incredible image and a very good analogy.
I remember coming across this a few months ago when i was at one of me lowest points and just starting to understand what was wrong with me. This was something i understood and may have even helped me understand/explain how i was feeling. Looking back on it now i feel optimistic and i pray i never slip back down (into the toilet).
Great work.

I've been bipolar/manic depressive (same thing) for 3 years now and even though this definitely hits home, I see a humorous side to it.

I can truly feel where your friend was. I was there.. and well my sister is still trying to climb out. So again must say wonderful take. I am glad you remember your friends and put up such a stunning point of view.

I love it and your commentary.
Have to laugh at how you speak of 'eye contact' with an eyeless model
Brilliant concept - makes the words "feel like sh*t" come to mind.

Awesome, really. I love how you use the little mannequins in your pictures. You really manage to get them in just the right pose for what you want. I like the little details, like how his right arm is bent slightly outwards like he can't get a firm hold on the rim. I can really feel the emotion to this one, and can certainly relate.
