Description An oil pastel painting of my brother's cats "Merlin" (on the left) and "Cobweb" (on the right). Sennelier and Neopastel oil pastels. A4 size (12x8 in). Lots of smoothing with fingers, paper stumps and even a firm paint brush to try to get a fur texture.

This is my first attempt at painting or drawing animals, so please do let me know what you think.

oil pastels are very hard to use (i just tried to do one of a couple of dogs off a bad photo....) but these guys are cute
i especially like the little kitten on the right

davepuls In reply to DragonPress [2010-12-24 09:17:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I don't think oil pastels are hard once you have had some practice and experimented to invent your own techniques - especially if you are using extra-soft artist quality oil pastels. Keep on with them!

DragonPress In reply to davepuls [2010-12-24 20:17:54 +0000 UTC]

no problem! oh, mine are VERY soft - they practically fall apart in my hand. but i don't work with them too often so i haven't gotten a technique yet...

Well done! You got the fur down great, makes me want to touch them. I am not a fan of oil pastels, I use the soft ones, so even more kudos to you!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

davepuls In reply to MountainInspirations [2010-11-30 17:03:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I think oil pastels are great. I've haven't tried soft pastels since school - I don't like the idea of the dust and how easy it is to smudge the paintings...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MountainInspirations In reply to davepuls [2010-11-30 23:46:52 +0000 UTC]

And the smudge factor is exactly why I like them so well. Dust is always an issue though, and no one sells the keyboard vacuums anymore. I do think though that oil pastels would be difficult to get off my cats, and would stain anything they walk on after reorganizing my studio.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

davepuls In reply to MountainInspirations [2010-12-01 08:52:53 +0000 UTC]

That's why I like oil pastels - there is no dust at all, and no mess. You just have to wipe your fingers with a paper towel after doing the finger painting bit. All of the pastel sticks to the paper!

They're great. I can't work with pastels at all and fur is really difficult. IF this is a first try then I'm looking forward to the next one already!

Thank you! My wife was very sceptical, as this is my first animal painting or drawing, but I think it's turned out pretty well.

Maybe more soon...

Dave you are becoming a master at the pastels my friend. Not an easy medium to work in, especially to capture cat fur and give it texture and depth. For your first attempt at this I would say you have it down pat. Fantastic. Onto the cats they are beautiful love their names as well.

Okay as long as you promise some time in the future to do Black and white one.I think you would do a great job.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

davepuls In reply to Mothergoose19 [2010-11-29 10:13:18 +0000 UTC]

OK, it's a deal. I've had enough of black and white just for the moment - must be the two hardest colours to paint with... With brown I can mix a whole range of colours in to make it more interesting.

It's lovely. All the proportions look right to me - when I saw the thumbnail, I first thought this was a photo ^^

davepuls In reply to gifdot [2010-11-28 20:02:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! The proportions were quite easy, as I traced the photo, but it very distinctly a drawing/painting as I wanted to try to make it better than the photo (which was out of focus!)
