Description Think its about done

An arm fit for a king, This prosthetic model was made for the 501st royal engineer corps. It contains a lot of the tools any modern field engineer would need.

Ok, back to reality!

This was a tough one to pull together, but it works, and is much much more comfortable compared to the previous prosthetic arm i built. The arm is completely made out of leather plates, which were engraved and painted. The lines left by the engraving process are filled up with gold paint.

other parts include the wrenches, brass nuts and bolts, copper rivets, straps, buckles, etc. etc.

Props go to Ian Finchfield, AKA Skinz-n-Hydez for the inspiration to make a full leather prosthetic arm.

Now to build the foldable mortar i want to attach to the back xD

Holy shit this is epic! How do you get a leather plate to harden like that? I'm new to leatherworking but I want to make something similar to this.

davevdveer In reply to GregoryThorn [2013-06-03 21:28:34 +0000 UTC]

Hiya, its always fun to help someone out: what you do: 1. start with veg. tanned leather. 2. make this stuff soaking wet (as in, leave in a skip with water for a few hours, rough side up). 3. engrave it using a dremel or something similar. even an HB pencil will work at this point. 4. Bend into the desired shape, and make sure it stays that way. 5. Let it dry. It should take a couple of days. if you want to harden it, roast it over a fire (without burning it). 6. paint it. And thats basically how every plate is made

2 weeks? I thought it would have been longer than that, but either way you've made a brilliant job of it!

Yes, it is in fact fully functional and fully articulated. Even the wrenches are well used by now, by actual use

Fires-storm [2011-10-31 11:25:46 +0000 UTC]

I must say, this entire piece is beautifully impressive! Did you use leather moulding to get the shapes first, or did you just wing it on the design?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

davevdveer In reply to Fires-storm [2011-11-02 10:40:24 +0000 UTC]

i make the stuff out of cardboard first, make sure everything works properly, trace the cardboard back on to leather, and cut that out i used to wing it in the past, but my current method saves a lot of material.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fires-storm In reply to davevdveer [2011-11-06 02:22:36 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thanks so much for the info! So it is just plane leather fitted together and tied on after the pattern is made in cardboard? Good to know!

davevdveer In reply to Fires-storm [2011-11-06 22:45:34 +0000 UTC]

well, thats just the basic outline for armour pieces... to engrave the leather is a bit trickier
