Wonderful achievement! I like the strong branches dark tones and the light grass and leafs. The almost grey sky is amazing and add the picture a great atmosphere.

the tree and the sky contrast is awesome... it looks foreboding and a little ominous and really beautiful.

Before you rush in make sure you've got an IR compatable camera body

Now see......I have LOADS to learn. I had NO idea about having a compatible body. Just thought it was a filter like all others and would work. I shall google it and see!

Well, if you do go for a filter and need any advice or info i'd be happy to oblige. I've got a tutorial written up as a word document because i was getting a lot of questions about my technique which youre welcome to, and has a good tutorial linked from his profile page

Just get one and get stuck in! , actually - if your cameras okay for IR and you have the information on 'how to' its fairly simple - i'll 'note' you that process doc so you can see what i mean

Thanks again Dave! I am really looking forward to getting into the IR world! One more thing....and I could probably Google it and find out but since you are here....how exactly can I tell if my camera can be used for IR? I have a Sony a550.

I had a look but the a550 is a fairly new release and i couldnt find much - i think sony's are usually okay but best check - go to gilads tutorial again and check the bit about the remote control test

I already read up on that VERY test man! AND have a filter picked out. Think I am gonna go with the Hoya and it wont cost near as much as I was thinking because I was looking up prices for the 10-20mm wide angle before talking to you. So instead I would only need a 55mm filter for my 18-55 instead of a 77mm for the wide angle. HUGE difference in price!

Yeah, a 55mm should be a good price, probably 1/3 of the price of a 77mm. And the Hoya is definitely the way to go - best quality.
I did a bit of a kit upgrade at the end of last year and decided to replace all my filters with Hoya/Hoya Pro (why spend big bucks on a lense and then put a £10 filter on the front?)
The new standard zoom i bought was a Nikkor 16-85mm which is maybe not a 'pro' lense but certainly mid-high end piece of kit - its a 67mm dia so fairly large and i bought a Hoya Pro1 UV, Hoya Pro Cir Pol, Hoya ND400 and a Hoya R72 - cost me about £250/$400

Oh but it was worth every bit of it! LOOK at the work you are producing with it now Dave! WOW man! I think you bring up a good point about going ahead and getting quality filters for your quality glass. Might was well....it will be a better investment in the long run that way! I seriously have to thank you again for all the help man. I am excited about getting into this and am also thinking about going ahead and ordering my ND400 I have been dying to have for my wide angle. LOL!

[Sorry for late reply - computer was/is dead

Not fixed in photoshop... taken using and infrared filter on the camera which blocks most of the visable light spectrum

Autistatic In reply to DavidCraigEllis [2008-06-18 21:14:10 +0000 UTC]
oke but i thought that people used infrared filters for black-white photo's
cause the filter is red so you photo's look red to so i don't get it!
so when you make it black and white there a hole lot more contrast in the photo
maybe i got a wrong filter in my head or something!

DavidCraigEllis In reply to Autistatic [2008-06-18 22:56:57 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, people used dark red filters in film photography to increase contrast/ darken sky - proper infrared filters are so dense you cant see through them with the naked eye and they block nearly all the colour spectrum , (check my favs gallery 'infrared' for loads of examples)
