Description And here is the first look at the main baddie in Scarlet PI, Happy Fun Land's CEO and owner, a secretive young woman who only calls herself "Mother."

Her back story, and character design, is a Gothic Lolita spinoff of the character Toyman from the Superman Animated Series. (We're talking when the cartoon version of Supes was just coming out.) Mother has the same theme as Toyman, that is someone who didn't have a childhood so she decided to make up for lost time.

In 'Mother's' case, she was a prodigally gifted child who was pushed through the academic scene since the age of five, by her fast track parents who wanted her to take up the mantle of their high-tech business. She not only took over by force, but also use the technology involved to create the childhood she was denied her by turning it on her parents. Most of HFL's technology, especially with the costumes, came from this origin.

She's always dressed in in Gothic Lolita style, and she always has a mask on to hide what she really looks like. You ask me, I think she looks too old for what she's supposed to be and wants to return to her childhood physically. And since she can't grow any younger, she has to dress up--or should I say doll up--on the part.

An actually rather interesting antagonist (an important part of any "man vs man" story, you just can't have them be 'The Tower' after all.).

However I still feel that her reducing her victims to brain dead vegetables before using the costumes doesn't make sense, you need a sentient mind for it to work. Brainwashing the victim so they BECOME their costume persona I can actually see.

Given the metaphoric nature of the costumes, I'm surprised she doesn't create one of herself as a child, then again, mass has to go SOMEWHERE and COME from somewhere as a general rule.

And the park couldn't have existed for that long, and a business this effective wouldn't neglect making sure the hosts of the costumes stayed healthy since regular kidnapping are how the Blood Countess screwed herself over. I'm sure there are plenty of suckered victims who were fooled into signing their lives away.

That being said, I wonder what roles she has her parents play now in her personal fantasy land.

And to note, the 'no one has seen her face' really works here, in particular given her psychological reasons for it.

She is a MUCH more impressive character design than the Amy Rose / Minnie Mouse hybrid you created.

Nice to know I made a good design with Mother. I'll be working on that angle (and some of your suggestions) once I get back to the Scarlet PI comic. I just have to get past the current backlog I've found myself in.

I'm just impressed she's able to run and control and KEEP control of Happy Fun Land with her semi-demented state. I wonder how she protects herself from usurpers. I can easily imagine what she ends up doing to them after of course.

To Note: I understand she's much more clever than her persona implies.

She is. You don't want to know what she does to usurpers.

I'd say she just adds them to her collection of costumed play things.

So her corporate rivals underestimate her, since no one can tell which part is a performance and which part is a genuine part of her psychosis?

It's easy to underestimate someone who's calling in life is to regain a childhood that was stolen from her, isn't it?

Thanks. Me and a friend thought up the concept behind HFL and created it's founder in the same light. I could actually see someone like this take over one of the many defunct amusement parks in Orlando (and they are legion) and remake it in their twisted Disneyish image.

Such is the wonders of collaborative imagination.

I like the concept.
