Haha your wood is seriously awesome, I tried to recreate a birch one in blender but it didn't look as natural as yours.. still blocky ol' MC

DavidHansson In reply to BenSow [2012-06-24 21:40:12 +0000 UTC]

hehe,, nice you wanna show it? Im using textures from CGtextures,, Im using Normal map and Specularmap,,

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BenSow In reply to DavidHansson [2012-06-25 14:21:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah sure.. I couldn't find the texture I wanted on CGTex so I went googling and got nice ones.. I used a normal map only.. No idea about specular map. I just started this 3D thing haha.. Looking at the log, is the mesh complex?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidHansson In reply to BenSow [2012-06-25 14:59:56 +0000 UTC]

hehe,, yeah, that happens sometimes.. Theres a lot of polygons at least heres the mesh [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BenSow In reply to DavidHansson [2012-06-25 15:16:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for uploading it. wow no wonder it looks so HD, mine is just a cube that has curved edges, I thought your image mapping gave it the uneven feel. Must've took a long time for one block eh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidHansson In reply to BenSow [2012-06-25 20:00:26 +0000 UTC]

well,, I don't knowe if it actually would have been necessary, but the aim were to make everything as natural as possible, and real geometry render more realistic than normalmap, I could of course also have used displacement map, which would produce the same result. The tree block didn't take too long to make..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BenSow In reply to DavidHansson [2012-06-26 12:45:55 +0000 UTC]

The number of polygons is kinda whopping lol.. for me.. A displacement map eh? Wow I didn't know it will have such a huge effect.. I assume it was a cube originally and you used some sort of brush to model the geometry of the cube?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidHansson In reply to BenSow [2012-06-26 14:07:23 +0000 UTC]

It seems like you are interested in 3d,, so will try to explain things a little closer.. A displacementmap is a greyscale map like bumpmap, but it actually generates real polygon geometry that is not visible in viewport but renders,, So it's really economically in viewport, but slow in render.. I create my mesh and textures in Zbrush. First, I paint the textures from "stamps" with wood textures.. then, I generate real geometry from the texture, In Zbrush the mesh is at millions of polygons.. but I generate a normalmap from the High definition mesh and then reduce the mesh..
To be honest though, I dont knowe it this level of details actually would have been necessary for this resulution, but It should still look good when you have it in wallpaper resolution!

BenSow In reply to DavidHansson [2012-06-26 15:18:10 +0000 UTC]

You caught me. Haha I actually have been interested in 3D since years ago.. I was a sketchup-er or whatever it is. Until I lost interest for a while.. Now started using blender and getting into rendering :/ Thanks for the tip! You've been a great help and patient enough

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidHansson In reply to BenSow [2012-06-26 18:16:16 +0000 UTC]

hehe,, yeah. ..
sketchup is not that great .
no problems! If you need any help, or have any questions just ask me! You can also ask if you just want some feedback, critique or want to discuss the workflow for a 3d project..

BenSow In reply to DavidHansson [2012-06-27 07:51:23 +0000 UTC]

Haha there is one thing I would want to know, different software should have different smoothing methods right? Because I have downloaded free models to practice rendering and alot of them even after smoothing in blender still retain those flat polygons especially if i apply a reflective/refractive material. Can external renders fix this or it's the modelling program itself?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidHansson In reply to BenSow [2012-06-27 19:44:13 +0000 UTC]

I think most of the softwares have similar methods,, 3d softwares has basically the same principle but with different interface. What probably is the issue in your case is that you haven't soften the edges between the polygons.. This function effects the normals of the object, just like a normalmap (if you knowe how it's work) basically normals describe how the light will result at the specific pixel. So when you use the soften edge method (what it's called in maya) the normals will approach to 45 degree as they approach the edge which make the edge look smooth.. I made a little instruction that maybe will make it more clear: [link] It's maya though but it would probably help,, What you done, if you sead you smoothed them, you have probably just increased the polygons by four. You should always soften the edges if you want to make an object look soft, even if you have large polygon numbers.
