Well, I adore this couple so-far not only because of the reasons YOU stated, but because I heard its a "Hate first then love" kind of relationship.
I heard they fight alot in the beginning of the movie, and eventually fall in love. Thats just- the most romantic way to fall in love. =3
Like Beat and Belle. They're my favorite Disney couple.. but then Naveen and Tiana walk in. They may not beat Belle and Adam, but they're top on my fav. couples list. ;D
Oh, sorry. *cough*
I'm just so excited for this movie. T.T
Oh, and this drawing in MAGNIFICENT!
Your work is amazing. Please work for Disney soon? ^^"

i agree with u but wat i think the reason they got such a backlash is just the fact that we've waited a long time for a black princess and they were seeing it a a chance to put a strong black male figue..idk...i like it the way it is tho'

I totally agree with you on the whole race thing. Race has no genetic basis. Humans haven't existed long enough to develop into sub-species. I grew up in a racist environment, but it never stuck. I always found it ludicrous. Why should it matter? Aren't we all human? Who cares about what shade your skin is? I find it rather petty. Love is colorblind. And even though I'm Caucasian, it's about time we had an African-decent princess from Disney! Viva la diversity! We're all just different shades of brown anyway

I agree with you 1000%, but the real complaints aren't coming from people opposed to an interracial relationship. I read that people only wished that there would be a black HERO for the boys who would have to be the prince for this movie. See thing is that never happens and people tend to not realize that boys (particularly black/Latino boys) don't need to see males who look like them being villains/gangsters etc. Regardless I am eager to see how this movie turns out. I cried from nostalgia when I saw the trailer.

You are so right. We need a black and/or Latino male hero just as much. Sexism runs both ways, just like racism. "Good" and "bad" are color-blind. If we want to end this enormous and ridiculous racial gap, we need to show as a society that skin color does not determine what role you should be in this world. It does not effect your intelligence or your ability to relate to others.
I am thrilled to finally have a black Disney princess, now we just need a minority male character in a positive role. In my opinion, boys have very hard societal constraints such as what emotions are acceptable to show, what colors to wear, etc. They're just as discriminated against for sex as girls (and I AM a girl). We need to set a good example for all the young men out there that it's cool to be good if you're a minority. Pop culture seems interested in portraying minority groups as the bad guys in stories more often than majority groups, be it on purpose or unintentional. People can say what they want, but these societal messages DO influence our children whether they know it themselves or not.
If we stop labeling these groups that are based on nothing but skin color or region of birth as groups that are most likely to have high criminal and undesirable, "bad" behaviors, then it should start to dissipate. It's like the labeling theory in Sociology. You label a child or group of children or people and treat them according to the label you give them, they tend to behave in accordance with said label since they are treated in a manner that encourages them to behave in this way. If you assume a child will be less intelligent and make poor grades and treat this child that way, regardless of the child's actual intelligence, the child will make poor grades, because they will be given less one-on-one time with instructors who've labeled them as such.
Children are being punished because of stupid and out-dated ideas. We need to make all children, and people, feel they have just as much a chance as the next person instead of confining them to a role regardless of how the person actually is. People are so stupid, labeling others based on things that have no basis on the person's character, instead of the actual actions and thoughts of the person. Hopefully having an African-American Disney princess is a sign that we're moving toward a minority male hero. And quickly. The ignorance can't end quick enough.

Oh this is so lovely, it looks exactly like the movie! I wish I could draw like this! Man, it's so beautiful and you did such an amazing job!
So...if the Prince isn't of African American decent, what race is he? Oh that would be so wonderful if he wasn't black because then like you said in your notes, it's showing that two people can love one another based on the person inside, not the color of skin. I am so excited for this movie! I saw Up! and there was a preview for this movie and I was practically squealing with delight because Disney hasn't made one of their classic animated movies in such a long time and also, the characters look charming and I adore the atmosphere/setting that I saw, the New Orleans, steam-boat look...this is going to be great!

hmmm he looks Indian or even Arab.. not white.
Naveen kinda reminds me of an Indian name or Arab. He looks more Arab than Aladdian.
meh Disney's always going to piss someone off, but they still manage to pull off great films.

I completely agree. I can hardly believe all the backlash Disney's been getting... I had hopes that our society would've come farther than this by now, but hopefully more movies like this will help that along.
This is fantastic, by the way. I love their outfits. Your art just keeps getting me excited for the movie all over again.

This is gorgeous, I really love it! The one thing that bugs me is the color of Tiana's jewelry; it stands out too much, like it doesn't quite fit the color scheme.
As for all the uproar, the thing I'm wondering about is how they'll handle the relationship given the time period and place that the movie is set in. I mean, we're talking about an interracial and inter-class relationship in New Orleans during the Jim Crow era. Is Disney just going to pretend that this isn't an issue? It would be nice if the film addressed our shameful past in a thoughtful way, and emphasized racial tolerance for the young viewers it's sure to attract.

I've been looking at your art for weeks and finally got around to actually commenting!
Seeing all your fanart for this movie really just makes me want to see it even more...and as for the race issue...honestly, Naveen looks more like latino/hispanic/etc. (also thought this because of his accent, and his voice actor is Brazilian), but then again, his race doesn't matter. He still looks amazing and judging by the trailers he seems to be quite a charmer, esp. for Tiana.
They look great together, and if this is what your fanart looks BEFORE the movie comes out, I can't wait to see what even more awesome works you'll crank out when The Princess and the Frog actually is released in theaters! Great job!

I agree with you. I don't mind at all, and I think this Disney couple will truly outstand the others! But one thing that annoys me a little is that when I saw the trailer, I was kind of surprised to see that [SPOILER: she's gonna be a frog for most of the movie] I don't think it's fair, but it's a good twist to the story. And I'm in no position to judge since the movie didn't come out yet.
But I truly love this couple!

anyways, i'm totally excited about this movie!

I totally agree with what you're saying. Sometimes when I look at commercials on TV and I see a black couple or a white couple, I get a little angry. You know, why can't the guy be white and the girl, black (or vice versa). We're never going to get past this racist shit if we keep going like this.
That said, I think that interracial statement might have come across better if they'd put a John Smith-type or a Prince Eric-type playing the prince. Anyways, I'm not very informed about this movie. "Naveen" is kind of an Arab/Indian name, isn't it?

I made a comment about Aladdin earlier. I'll admit that I may have been wrong in that regard. I'll have to go back and look at my old video. If I am wrong then I need to correct my memory. I'm not one of those people that won't admit error and I like to correct my mistakes and never argue from ignorance.
