Don't take this the wrong way but do you think the theme of Dune relates to some of the wars in the Middle East. Since they're fighting over a drug and water like us fighting over oil.

It's all good. I'm actually an ethnic Armenian from Azerbaijan, so I'm fairly familiar the whole region. Frank Herbert used a lot of Arabic and Muslim themes in Dune, from names of places, to religions, people, groups, etc. The Fremen are modeled after the Bedouins with their lifestyle, while Paul is based on Mohamed and the Islamic redeemer figure of Mahdi (Mua'Dib). So yeah, the spice is undoubtedly the oil, and the planet itself is a representation of the Arabian peninsula.

In fact, Paul is called the "Mahdi" between Fremen people, just one of the thousands of names people in Arrakis gave him
