Description Steps 12. Clouds Final & 13. Final

Putting the foreground and background clouds together, I'm just about finished with the piece. The final thing to add was the bright light source. I'm not generally a fan of the standard Photoshop lens flares (I prefer to make my own if I'm going to use a flare effect), but in this case I think the stock standard flare worked out all right, and really amped up the brighness that I wanted from the light source (plus those little circle effects look cool ).

Hey, I'm not making any excuses. That was awful. I did that about 8 years ago. I'd take it out if I still had the layered files.

Star Trek is bringing lens flares back too.

I'm joking of course, but I will elaborate more on the lens flare tomorrow.

Well I did come off as pretty negative there. Don't get me wrong, it's a badass piece regardless. I wouldn't have you on my watch list if I didn't think your art was kickass.

I haven't seen Star Trek yet, but I have heard about the lens flare business. I kinda wish I hadn't hear about it, because now I'll be sitting there looking for them all over the place.

It's not so much you were negative, as you didn't really explain what doesn't work about the lens flare. (which I too am guilty of doing (mainly because I got busy and forgot to reply to another artist))

Anyway, my general stance is I don't really like the stock standard lens flares in Photoshop. If I do a flare or glow, I pretty much always make my own, rather than use the standard filter.

However I was thinking recently about the use of the standard lens flare, and what would cause that effect in the real world.

A bright light source like the sun hitting a camera lens was capable of flaring, and since I was using the sun as a bright source for the rimlight effect I wanted, the lens flare was a possibility.

I did reference a lot of photos related to this piece, and lens flares were in most of the photos. So I applied it and the lens flare seemed to fit, and worked towards what I wanted to achieve (I think I could have positioned it better though).

Lens flares were and are still overused in places, but just because they are abused, doesn't mean they can't be of some use.

If you personally don't like it then that is fine, one other person has said the light is too bright in the final stage, but to me that falls in the subjective category.

Anyway those are my thoughts on lens flares, and I'm glad you like the rest of the piece.

P.s. I haven't seen Star Trek yet either, but I've heard about the lens flares already.

Yeah my problem wasn't really that it's a lens flare so much as it's the stock Photoshop flare, so as soon as you see it you're like "Photoshop!" If you had done a homemade flare I wouldn't have had a problem at all.

View a slideshow of the steps and it should do pretty much the same thing as an animated GIF. Hopefully get around to making a video of the next colour piece I do.

Thanks for the step-by-step.

One recommendation for you: look at Nagel's Series 24 Vapor Smoke and Fog brushes .

No problem.

I actually know about the Nagel brushes... pretty sure I have that cloud set on my old machine, but haven't put it on my new computer yet. I must get around to downloading some others too, so thanks for reminding me.

This looks great
The lens flares dont add a shadow effect like the lighting effects does it? I ask because I'm not good when it comes to shading.

davidyardin In reply to Dante-Picasso [2009-05-19 00:20:15 +0000 UTC]

No the lens flare doesn't add shadows, it's a lighting effect. This is what it looks like over a plain black background [link]

Dante-Picasso In reply to davidyardin [2009-05-19 00:49:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok. I see it now. Do you have any tips on how to shade properly. I can always see it correctly in my head but I cant seem to project it onto what I am drawing on.
