That looks really good I love the squash and stretch of his body over the course of the jump, and the landing looks pretty great.

I noticed a couple of things though...Β

Like first off, I think it would have looked better if you added an anticipation pose, just before the jump? It comes off a little pose to pose when he kinda just goes straight to the jump. Also he seems to lose volume over the course of the jump. The head also is a bit jittery just before he comes up after landing? Unless that was on purpose? Also it looks like his front legs land before his back legs, but it doesn't quite look like his weight goes to his front legs in that moment? I'm not sure if a squash or just bending his forelegs just a bit, then extending them right as the backlegs land might help.

But yeah overall this looks amazing. The fluidity is there, the arc is spot on and just great squash and stretch right there.

(sorry if I got kinda long and rambly i don't see a lot of animation on my watch and thought i'd really go through this and critique it a bit xD)

Thanks for the critique I couple of the things I noticed after posting, like the head jerk, but others I didn't. I need to get back into do animations. I'll see if I can't redo this animation keeping all these things in mind =]Β

No problem! Animation is a lot more complicated than some people think and I myself am still trying to figure out a lot of things to make it look more natural and I really appreciate seeing other people working on theirs as well

I notice also that you said you started out animating in flash but have switched to photoshop? I've heard of some other people also doing that and their animations come out pretty nice. I've animated in photoshop before but haven't recently and I've been using toonboom now which is really amazing. Any reason for the switch from Flash to Photoshop?

Wow, this is amazing! I have no idea how you do that; the body is so dynamic in yet it still looks like one fluid motion! Do you redraw each frame from scratch or do you copy and paste the slide and make edits to it to make the next slide?

This was made on real paper and pencil so yes, redrawn each time =] Though I do have a light table. When I animated in Photoshop its the same process too. Lots of redrawing and trying not to mes up the proportions.Β

Oh, okay! Hmm... maybe I should try it like that next time, because the animation I've done recently looks a little stagnant because I literally just copied and pasted the same slide only changing the legs and then slightly changing the head/tail position.

Either way, I can only imagine the time put into this, and it really came out great!

If your really wanting to get into animation I suggest looking into this video tutΒ www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHtoFw…

Sad to say it was extremely comparable to my $40,000 art school education. There are also a couple of books I could recommend that are amazing references. I've collected a bit of a library despite my vagabond nature in this world. So if its character animation, effects animation, or even just story development/storyboards I got a book for it.Β

Oh cool, thank you! That video is really great and very helpful!

Oh, I wouldn't say that! I mean, your education also gave you a lot of experience and feedback from your professors and the constant motivation to keep trying and do well, I'm sure, which is something I would not have from just watching videos!

But wow, those books sound really cool, though! Especially the story development/storyboards one I would imagine could be really fun to just read!

The story directing one is def my favorite. Its written so well and I've learned so much, and I'm not even done with it yet. Its called "Directing the story" by Francis Glebas.

the flub is probably the main reason I love animating rats. They're so tubby and squishy.Β

This guy Draw with Jazza does a lot of really cool stuff including tutorials. He is the main guy who taught me how to animate in flash. However I have since moved on to animating in Photoshop, but the principles are the same.Β

This guy is Harry Partridge, he does a step by step animation tutorial that was exactly paralleled to my thousand dollar education experience for free.Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHtoFw… There is the first episode I believe there are 10 or 12 of them in all.
