Description
Technically from a roleplay that I just started with L-Young with Varrick coming to terms with his family abandoning him in Aryn. However it was very much inspired by the rp with Riley where he tells young Varrick he can't run away from his problems. For some reason that phrase really resonated with me and in turn with Varrick. So of course of course he tries to run from his problems X]Related content

This to me looks like a screenshot from an epic film.
A film I would watch a thousand times.
Then again, that is basically like all of your work.

I love your style and Varrick's general shape! It's really refreshing and very, very, VERY CUTE. Your color work is wonderful and the perspective on this piece is as well. I love ever time a picture with this guy pops up in my devs OUO

I think we can all relate to this... I'm sure everyone has tried to flee from some problem they just couldn't handle.

This is really great! I love the pallet you used, and the glow that you used for the lines is particularly eyecatching, especially the subtle oranges and blues you stuck in there. Real nice work!

I love his expression. it is so pained and sad. I love the pose too, and the way the trees are curling up around him as if it is a fish eye lens! It really brings the focus to him and the motion and shows how big the world is.

I love this style so much. It just reminds me of a certain Disney film or productions artstyle, or something similar.

The thing that I truly love about this piece is the lush autumn background. I'm not sure what word many others would describe it as, but just the shadowed beneath of it all gives of such a brooding presence.

I used two different tablets as I have one in my studio and one that I travel with. Studio one is an intuos 5 touch (Though personally I hate the touch option and have it disabled). The Travel tablet is the Cintiq Companion 2. Program I use is PS .... I think I'm on CS5 or 6 ? Honestly though non of this matters. I could go back to using an old wacom original, or bamboo and just use the ps elements that comes free with the tablet and do around the same stuff. There are a few things that might become a little tricky, but its all still do able. I upgrade because I use it so often and I'm trying to make a career off of it so tend to be able to make up the money through commissions. If your just looking to start in the art world or your doing it as a hobby get a wacom bamboo. They are really nice tablets and they get the job done with out getting too expensive. Also I'd test out the elements copy that should come with it before you go out and buy Photoshop because that does get expensive. Hope that was helpful.

I really am touched that Riley's words resonated with you lol and in turn it created art! I love all these pieces of Varrick, it's kind of inspiring me to do a picture of Riley and Varrick that I may work on later today, we'll see!

Beautiful! My girl used to run from her problems too, but she would literally go for a run to make herself forget her stress. She worried alot haha.
The picture is really dynamic, I like the blurred effect of the background and Varrick's pose. His expression is so sad though

DANG XD no wonder it looked so weird for me. he looked wolfish, but I thought he was a little too chubby and looked like maybe a rodent of sorts. I hope he becomes a total cool and muscular wolf when he grows

This came out so great! I love the finished product! You did a great job in making his expression look determined and yet desperate at the same time. The colors you chose for the background and lighting also help to portray the urgency of the mood. It makes me think of fire which in turn creates an urgent atmosphere. Then the perspective really tops everything off. The way you kind of fishbowled the trees gives an ominous and slightly judgmental feel to the background like the trees are looking down on him which also contributes to the desperation within the piece. It really makes him feel isolated and alone.
The only thing I see that kind of bothers me with this is his left front paw. That is a crazy hard angle to draw so kudos to you but with the pose and angle you chose that paw should be the thing closest to the camera and so should be drawn at a larger scale and should be shaded a bit darker to match his head more since it is closer to the viewer. The way you have blurred it so that the focus is on his face is great but it places that front paw back into the background and skews the perspective a bit. Again though this is a crazy hard pose to draw and I think you did a great job with it! Well done!

Thank you for the complements and the critique. You pulled some stuff out that I hadn't even thought about. Such as the oppressive nature of the trees, my thoughts were more just on composition and giving the eye a path to follow around the piece while still focusing on the main attraction. But I like the feelings that you got from everything. And the critique is def something I will be keeping in mind next time. The ref I was using wasn't pushing the scale perspective your talking about, but I also made the head bigger / poofier and have a slightly more skewed perspective going on, so I should have compensated.Β

L-Young In reply to DawnFrost [2015-07-16 01:21:37 +0000 UTC]
Not a problem. Yeah, I was looking at it and the trees reminded me of movies I've seen where the main character will shrink down in fear while everything around them grows large and bends over them while judging them. And it works perfectly with what Varrick is thinking in our RP!

Gosh, your art is so smooth, crisp, and beautiful.Β I love your lines and that shiny rim lighting you always have going on.Β I wish I could steal your style!
The difference between Varrick's huggable innocence and the motivation of this picture is interesting.Β I'm really interested in Varrick's character; I like what you've been building him into.
