Description Regarded by many, as the 'Secret' prototype of Oliver Bullied's Merchant Navy class.

When he was no longer needed, he was sold to a unknown source and after many years, he somehow found his way onto Sodor and discovered by Henry.

For his trial run, as his tender was still under repair, Mac was paired with Henry's Stainer tender, a little nod toward the interchange trials of 1948, however the test didn't go quite as well as many had expected.

Try the Leader. Or the Fury. That was a failure.

Still, the Bulleids weren't that unreliable. The survived till the end of Southern steam as well as the rebuilds, and look at how many are left.

31 do survive (but most don't operate) I thought I heard there were only 8 that operate?

Maybe so...but still! This is a fairly modern design. Welded boiler, steel firebox, thermic siphons, electric headlights (though Peppercorns Pacifics had them too i think), need I say more?

yes you need say more, the merchant navy was still a very failed design, the welded boiler and wheels and other part keeped cracking due to good materials being hard to find from the war (not to mention the chain driven valve gear). The rebuilds had the real good invitations, they could rack up more miles between repairs and didn't need that much maintenance. Plus most engines had thermic siphons, they weren't the first.

Yeah, you're right. No wonder all of them were rebuilt. They were never as good as the Light Pacifcs.

Poor Mac.
I quite the bios that aren't all sushine and daisies.. makes things interesting.
BTW I Thought Henry had a Fowler tender like Gordon, Edward, and James? Or was the tender kept in storage until the trials..?
