Description
This sketch (first intended to be a formal piece) is of Brigit, a Celtic goddess like the Greek Athena: they are matrons of wisdom, crafts, war. Here she is in a Pictish arisaid. An arisaid is type of Scottish highland women's clothing, which is like a blanket wrapped and belted around the body (the men's version is called feileadh mor.) I think the blue & black checkerboard pattern makes it Pictish. She has red hair to represent fire symbolizing her, and a sword to represent her as a warrior. In the background are the sacred hills in Ireland named after the chest of Danu, the Celtic mother goddess. Perhaps the picture is also like Queen Boudicca of the ancient Celts of Southern Britain, who was said to have red hair and fought the Romans.I used a shiny copper coloured pencil on part of her hair, but you cannot see it.
I may not be able to do a formal piece like this without some reference, though the progress pictured here took parts of three days, mostly at night. When I told a friend how long it took he made a lolcat picture about it.

Its affective work but I can see why you uploaded it to your scraps as the photograph quality is pretty poor.

actually because it is a work in progress and may only become a sketch for a piece after I find some references

I suppose so. for me a rough draft is intrinsically tied to black and white graphite, so I didn't think of it that way.

I do 'sketches' in any media except 3D stuff that is hard when it is done. It is good to also use charcoal and to experiment with colour and with 3D form (like plasticine or polymer clay.)
