Description
During my recent holiday in Wales, I've been working on concept art for my new fire and ice dragon families. The ages given here are set around the 1500s, which is the dateline for a story I hope to work on with these guys, somewhere down the line.
Pyrrhus
The natural leader of the group, originally hatched in Europe around the time of the signing of the Magna Carta, Pyrrhus is noble, brave and strong and usually has the final say on important choices. Also a bit of a hothead, he can sometimes come across as pompous and arrogant, requiring the wisdom of friends to cool him down. Ultimately, Pyrrhus is a good dragon with the best interests of the group at heart.
Fflamwen
Hailing originally from Wales, Fflamwen is the wife of many years of Pyrrhus, and very much his equal in temper and impulsiveness. In fact, of anything, she's even more feisty and fiercely protective of her family. Nevertheless, she's just as caring and supportive as she is buxom and matronly. As a strong feminist, she believes in standing right at her husband's side and sharing in his responsibilities equally, rather than just sitting back and letting the males do all the work.
Ignis
Pyrrhus' eldest son, Ignis is very grounded for a fire dragon, taking on the role of the most responsible offspring. Taking after his mother Fflamwen, Ignis has a broad Welsh accent and has the resemblance of a hulking great dwarven blacksmith – if he were a huge muscular Welsh dragon. A smithy by vocation, he tries to avoid violence directly, preferring to use his fire for creation rather than destruction. Despite his quiet and serious demeanor, he possesses a dry sense of humour.
Brantley
Very much your typical fire dragon, especially in his teen punk phase of pre-100, Brantley is a very "act first think later" kind of fellow. A bit of a rebel, who took to wearing a piece of old chainmail like an open vest, he likes to look "hot stuff" (that's the nearest fire dragons get to saying "cool"). Fortunately, his older brother Ignis can usually reign him in when he gets too wild.
Ash & Cinders
The youngest son and daughter of the dragons, who recently hatched into the world in the 1500s, during the events of the story. Although only little, they already show signs of being inquisitive little firebrands who will someday become strong and noble beasts.
Jökull
As unlikely as it seems, Jökull is Pyrrhus' best friend. Very much his opposite number, the native Icelandic is a very patient coolheaded dragon who rarely shows his emotions, careful in his methods and never hasty to act. Even when he's angry, his fury is cold and measured, and he only acts with violence is if his patience is really pushed beyond breaking point (which takes a lot of doing). He can give them impression of seeming cold and uncaring, but once he warms to somebody he's truly a friend for life.
Ískona
Ískona is beloved wife of Jökull, despite their apparent lack of emotion on show. Although she appears as much of an "ice lady" as her name suggests, she's actually very caring and deeply devoted to her family and friends, being the first to watch out for the welfare of others. She's solidly faithful to her husband and her most visible show of affection is that she's never seen without her necklace of Viking coins and crystals, which Jökull made her as a 100-year anniversary present – in exchange for her gift to him of a travelling-satchel fashioned from Greenlandic muskox hair.
Flís & Flögur
The sons of Jökull and Ískona, Flís and Flögur can be accurately described as "a real Chip and Flake off the old Glacier". Though still kids as of the 1500s, not yet fully able to utilise their developing ice breath, the lads are already showing signs of typical ice dragon rationale, which can be expressed in kiddish insights, true to the old saying, "out of the mouths of babes."
