Description
I've been reading Mossflower again recently, and during my weekend away I decided to draw two of my favourite characters from the book.
I was working on the idea that Martin was trying to grab a few moments of sombre reflection. Always inwardly tortured by the painful memories of his past, the Warrior mouse has had few things to be happy but about. However, Gonff the Mousethief, as irrepressible as ever, is determined to make his stoic friend crack a smile.
Martin the Warrior & Gonff the Mousethief are characters from "Mossflower" and Copyright © to Brian Jacques' estate.

awww these two sound so sweet! I really love the posing for both the characters, especially Gonff, he looks so fittingly animated XD. I never did get to read Mossflower.

Yeah, they were quite the heroic pair, in their own little ways...

Cool interpretations of these characters I imagine.
I remember reading The Bellmaker from Jacques. I was impressed.

Always loved these guys!
Ah yeah, the Bellmaker was certainly one of the better Tales of Redwall! I loved the storyline for the reformed searat Blaggut!

When it comes to drawing Redwall characters, you haven't missed the beat here! This really came out very nice in your style! Between the tough and stoic Martin and the carefree and jolly Gonff, looks like you still have the knack when it comes to composing these characters!
Keep up the great work, wot?

Thanks very much, Alex!
I was certainly pretty happy with how Martin and Gonff came out here. I love these guys, and they're certainly another good example of those "complimentary pairs" that always make for great buddy-duos.
If Yooka-Laylee were in Redwall, they'd most certainly be an opposing combination of a something like a laidback lizard (since Yooka is a reptile, although he also neutral-good) and a feisty sparrow (Laylee being a flyer and chaotic-good)?
Though chameleons never appeared in the books and lizards were usually hostile swamp tribes, bats did put in the occasional appearance as dark but benevolent cave-dwellers.
A bat tribe helped out Martin and his friends after their boat was swept down a river and over an underwater falls running under their mountain on the way to the coast and Salamandastron. They were blind but keen-sensed and friendly mouselike beings with wings and they spoke in soft voices with the added verbal tic of echoing the last words of every sentence, sentence.

MartinXGonff? I didn't know THAT particular pairing was a thing... ;;
But then again, there doesn't seem to be a lot of decent Redwall smut around here... apart from Constance, but I'm not into MILF...

Oh indeed. Although I only ever saw one or two (possibly three) fanfics of them. It never became rampant... as far as I know, that is.
I've seen some of that stuff over on FA. I'm honestly surprised that Constance became so popular, though I guess it shouldn't be that surprising.

Well, I certainly never saw any myself... Martin and Timballisto perhaps, though I didn't care for that... he wrote Martin as an effeminate subby... way too OOC
Yeah, don't know why Nelvana gave Constance such huge boobs...

All that Constance stuff... like I've always said, she's a motherly figure. I couldn't see her as anything more than motherly, and I'm not into MILF.

Whoa, really? ^^ I think I recall you mentioning seeing Martin and Timbal before, but I don't remember you mentioning the 'subby' part. Where'd you read that?
They knew Constance was going to be designed as a big fat lady, so they probably added in her 'assets' () without thinking about it. Noticeably, when they designed Rowanoak in the 3rd season, she has a much flatter chest, suggesting they learned their lesson. ^^

Somewhere on FurAffinity, I think...
Usually I'd be curious about Redwall porn, since there's not a lot of it that's actually decent... and the gay variety is even rarer than the straight stuff (which mostly involves Constance)
But if Martin's going to get involved, I expect him to be the dominant and masculine partner, considering who he is!
Heh, yeah... got to love the Irish accent the voice-actress gave Rowanoak too!

Heh, I went and looked it up. I only saw the title page, didn't bother reading it. ^^ I've seen a fair share of that kind of stuff, but like you said, so little of it is any good. There are some with interesting ideas/concepts, but so poorly executed. Actually, I must confess, I enjoy the idea of Martin being a little on the 'sub' side. Not like the 'whipped' kind, more like... just 'agreeable', for lack of a better term.
It's been a while since I heard Rowanoak's voice, though I do remember being a little surprised at how different she sounded from Constance. But that's because I'm biased: whenever I read any of the Redwall books, certain characters all sounded the same to me. All Badger Lords sounded the same, all Badger Mothers sounded the same, all moles sounded the same, all hares... well, you get my point. Basically, I had a certain voice for almost every species, so it felt like I was reading about the same characters every time.

Yeah, mostly amateurs with no real talent for drawing...
As for me, I more commonly draw my OWN characters these days!
As for Martin, he's more likely to appear in spirit form now, and since the Laterose cutting was brought to Redwall and transplanted to their garden, I believe that provides a spirit-link for Rose to reunite with him... but beyond walking in the moonlight and such, can ghosts make love?
That's certainly the case for me too, to a certain respect... generic gruff West-country accented moles, husky Irish hedgehogs and squeaky-sounding cockney rats or weasels...
Main characters were more likely to get a definite voice-actor though. Sir Michael Horden as Lord Urthstripe the Strong - in his Mr Badger voice from Cosgrove Hall's Wind in the Willows.

Kelaiah In reply to DCLeadboot [2019-06-21 00:28:14 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, basically. ^^ And that's good. Develop your own style/characters/whatnot!
*snerk* Well, I don't know about that, but I imagine just being together in spirit would be more than enough for Martin and Rose.
Irish hedgehogs, now *that's* an idea! I like that. Did you mean Sir Michael *Hordern*? Because I looked him up, and he passed away back in 1995. But yeah, whenever I imagine a Badger Lord's voice, I always think of black actors voicing them, like James Earl Jones, Keith David, Idris Elba, etc.

DCLeadboot In reply to Kelaiah [2019-06-21 08:12:38 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, trying to stick to my own style... though friends keep influencing some of my ideas too, of course...
Heh, indeed... certainly, Brian Jacques never really touched on the topic of sex - apart from the Early Instalment Weirdness where Cluny looked lustfully at Cornflower during the parley, and when Basil Stag Hare started teasing Matthias about the mousemaid being obviously attracted to him...
Then again, adventurers in these stories never poop either, which is a common trope in every medium...
I think it's the way Brian Jacques wrote them. Some of these character dialects some to suit these regional accents, like the west-country moles, the Scottish hawkbirds, the posh hares or the common-as-muck rats! Also, Ambrose Spike sounded kind of Irish in the TV series.
Sir Michael Hordern, yeah. A lot of the voices I imagine belong to actors long-dead or too old for the part they play, but then I can only work with what I know.
Heh, some good ideas there - at least, I know James Earl Jones as Mufasa and Darth Vader, and Idris Elba as Chief Bogo. Could just imagine Lord Brocktree referring to Ruffgar Brookback as "a teen-sy litt-le ott-ah!"

Kelaiah In reply to DCLeadboot [2019-06-22 06:36:51 +0000 UTC]
Nothing wrong with that, I say. We're all influenced by one thing or another.
Mm, no, there were more moments like that: Dandin and Saxtus both obviously had a crush on Treerose, who had a crush on Rufe Brush, who was more interested in palling around with Oak Tom (who would end up marrying Treerose, interestingly, despite them hardly having any screentime together). Then there were the twins, Southpaw and Bobweave, who were infatuated with Dotti. And Tammo and Pasque, they had a cute little romance. And of course, there was the relationship between Mariel and Dandin - Jacques went to his grave refusing to confirm whether those two were romantic with each other or not. At first, I liked them together, but after a while of some rather poorly written fanfics, I began to hate it... but then started loving it again.
Except no one really wants to read about somebody pooping. I mean... how do you make that interesting? And it would make one heck of a story if such a thing were part of an important moment in the plot! Except I honestly hope that never happens, because I don't think the world will ever be ready for a thing like that!
Good points, all around! X) It's kind've a shame how otters slowly lost their nautical talk as the series went on. Or at least, I remember them talking that way more during the earlier books, but later ones, they began to talk more like common beasts.
Ah, that's understandable. I'd *LOVE* James Earl Jones as Boar the Fighter, the Badger Lord who forged Martin's sword! He would *ROCK* that role!
Keith David did the voice of Goliath from "Gargoyles" and Dr. Facilier from "The Princess and the Frog", among other roles: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LO3ua…
I thoroughly approve of Idris Elba voicing Lord Brocktree, though! "No you cannot! 'Brockers'! The idea! Good night!"

Yup
Well, romances and crushes were one thing. Brian Jacques didn't explicitly have physical sex going onscreen, I meant. There weren't even any embarrassing boners... (just as well, since many of them didn't even wear pants!)
But there were relationships, at least.
Darien "the Dart" Firedart was even originally written as the lovechild of Mariel and Dandin... even to his name being a portmanteau of theirs, and his rope-dart being a cross between Gullwhacker and a dagger!
Even he grew beyond that. Now he's a walking anachronism who can freely travel between Redwall and Danbuster's home.
Yeah, that lends itself more to comedy than adventures... like slipping something in someone's drink to nobble them from joining an important race... only for the wrong person to drink it!
Oh, they kept their familiar accents in my imagination, at least... even if Brian Jacques got lazy about writing his Funetic Aksents sometimes, it didn't prevent old stereotypes from playing themselves out...
Heh, James Earl Jones as Boar - that IS an idea!
Bit late for me though. I'm nearly through Mossflower, and John Rhys Davis did Boar in a big gruff Gimli/Treebeard voice...
Oh, that guy! Yeah, I've got that film recently on DVD. Very slimy character, that Shadow Man...
Could be I could find him a role... even a villainous role, like Feragho...
Yup, I like the idea of Elba as Brocktree...

Well no, but he was writing a children's series, after all. *snerk* Plus, going by the cartoons, as well as the illustrations in the book, none of the animals had genitals anyway. They were all "funny cartoon animals" in a sense.
But yeah, I remember your OC! Cool idea. Heh, I think that's hilarious, though.
Hah! Yeah, pretty much...
Well good for you, at least, that you could still hear the accents.
Thanks, but oh wait, you mean Rhys Davis did the voice in the audiotape, or you just imagine his voice? I don't know, I see him voicing either a shrew, a hedgehog or some kind of vermin. Maybe one of the Father Abbots.
Keith David voicing Ferahgo? I don't know... it's a cool idea, but, I'm kinda biased. I still want him voicing a Badger Lord... maybe he can do Urthstripe and Urthwyte?

Well, I always kind of reason that anthros with no pants on have their fur to hide any naughty bits... (only really getting visible when the hormones flair up...)
Heh, yeah... still, Darien has a habit of showing up at unexpected times... even in a Redwall RP, where Alex and Danbuster ended up in Redwall for a time (courtesy of one of Retsy's dimensional portals)
In addition to Cluny (and some other characters) somehow being alive, Darien also shows up to become a valuable ally. Since Alex largely orchestrated the storyline, there were many inconsistencies, especially since he started out copying the Redwall storyline while I had my own idea about the timeline - which was set in the time of Matthias and Mattimeo, a little after the events of their stories, rather than before... so Matti and co are now in their teen-seasons and Orlando rules at Salamandastron, where my Long Patrol OCs live. Our RP storyline would later reach a compromise...
Just the voices I imagined for the roles, yeah. And indeed, some of my voice-actors get reprised for other roles in other books...
Guess Ferahgo is another guy who's hard to cast.
But I tend to typecast a bit, myself...
Oh yeah, and remember Sollertree from Marlfox? That gentle-giant hedgehog who helped the young questers? I saw Peter Ustinov (Blackbeard's Ghost) in that role... hilarious hearing his normally laidback voice go to a high-pitched yell when he outbullied those robbers:
"MYYY enemies have no GRAAAAVES!! I ET 'em all!"

Hah! Not a bad choice!
