Description Martin the Warrior is one Redwall character I feel so sorry for.
Anyone who has read Martin the Warrior will now what I mean. For those who haven’t, I can reveal this much. The mousemaid, Laterose, was the only mouse he ever loved. Tragically, when she went to fight in battle alongside of him, she was herself slain. Martin never really got over it. He even lived out his seasons as a confirmed bachelor.

I was aiming at some symbolism here: the wilted rose, representing the late Laterose - his father’s sword, which he fought to regain from his enemy, a cold replacement for his girl.
And so, the Warrior must travel his next road alone…

I like that idea. Because come on! She died of a freaking head-bump? I'd buy it if she had a concussion and suffered amnesia (that would have been sad enough), but outright death? Come on... The poor, miserable, lonely, heartbroken guy needs a reason to go on living other than to just help others, because while helping others is good, it's not good when it's at your own expense.

So yes, I'm all for the idea that she really did survive. But I will never read that book ever again. It's just too depressing.

Yeah, agreed... I never could buy the idea of her dying from hitting the wall. That's just lame. Even Boromir didn't go down before taking three arrows - and he took about twenty Uruks with him!
I haven't had any urge to read that particular book again myself.
I prefer the other books, like "Mossflower", "Mariel", "Bellmaker" and "Taggerung"

I've seen Redwall and Mattimeo... not Martin the Warrior.
I liked Mattimeo better! (Got that on DVD...)
Haven't got Martin yet, but anyway that book always seem slow for me... Martin, Rose and Grumm had so many random encounters with pigmy shrews, cannibal lizards and savage squirrels that I got tired by it.

I think my favourite ones were Mattimeo, Mariel of Redwall (except for the Flitchaye bit, which, to me, seemed avoidable), the Bellmaker, Salamandastron, Pearls of Lutra... well let's face it. I like most of them!

I still never figured out how she died from being flung into a wall... was she incredibly fragile, or something?!
Yet she survived all the mis-adventures they had trying to reach Noonvale...

I think when she hit the wall, she hit her head really hard....it wasn't really clear but oh well.

I sobbed after reading Martin the Warrior. I felt so bad. *sigh*

Reading that book, I can only concentrate on the action at Marshank, myself. Martin's journey to Noonvale is so dragged out by random encounters (e.g. unrelated hungry lizards)...
I tend to tire quickly of reading about hampered long journeys! Get to journey's end and big battle!!

But yes, my sympathies are with Martin over the sad ending...
Is there any wonder he remained a confirmed bachelor. Still, I guess they were together again in the afterlife...

Yeah. She never left his heart. It was like Polleekin said.

Great work! Yeah, that was the saddest part of any of the 5 books I finished. Darned sucky ending...

I have trouble with that book, myself. Too many random encounters dragging the plot out!
Get to Noonvale, already!!

Definitely the most tragic scene in all the Redwall novels, that the legendary hero lost his beloved, especially when it was foretold by Pollekin; she knew someone was gonna die. And we can see the sadness on Martin's face after the war is over, it's as if he knows that victory was reached, "But I have paid the worst price for it" comes to his mind.

Well, as you might see from the year given on my logo here, this is one of my old pieces.
I'm not that quick... yet!

I've not been with DA that long, so I'm uploading most my old stuff at the moment.
