Description
Martin the Warrior is one Redwall character I feel so sorry for.Anyone who has read Martin the Warrior will now what I mean. For those who haven’t, I can reveal this much. The mousemaid, Laterose, was the only mouse he ever loved. Tragically, when she went to fight in battle alongside of him, she was herself slain. Martin never really got over it. He even lived out his seasons as a confirmed bachelor.
I was aiming at some symbolism here: the wilted rose, representing the late Laterose - his father’s sword, which he fought to regain from his enemy, a cold replacement for his girl.
And so, the Warrior must travel his next road alone…
The character of Martin the Warrior is Copyright © Brian Jacques.

Indeed... in fact this is one book where I believe in an alternate ending where Rose survived her ordeal and they lived happily after - but that "true" ending was kept secret as part of a conspiracy to keep Noonvale hidden.
Even when they later travelled to Mossflower together (because Martin was still young and adventerous), Rose's origins weren't spoken of...

Indeed... And this is why Badrang is the most unpopular character in the entire series!

As far as villains go, that's a pretty good analysis.
Actually, though, I kind of like how Ferahgo was a rare sane villain, even if he did have some low-down methods, like poisoning the supplies.
But yeah, Badrang is certainly one of my most villains for killing Rose... and Vilu Daskar from "Legend of Luke" was also another bastard, because he killed Martin's mother and had his crew attack Luke's tribe - and for no other reason than For the Evulz . He actually later told Luke they killed them for "fun", for Pete's sakes!

I never know who I hate more, Vilu or badrang. But I remember in legend of luke, it was implied that vilu was a friend of badrang and had him go and kidnap martin and murder his grand mother.

It's when luke sees his home completely abandoned then vilu says something like "do you really think I'm that stupid, I had it all planned" he said something like that.

Looking at the book now, Vilu didn't say that exactly - so I thought nothing of it myself. I assumed they moved on or been driven off by other marauders, after Martin and his grandmother were taken. Certainly Timballisto was found in the oarslaves of Ripfang's ship.
I didn't think Vilu was even aware of Martin's existence, since he was hidden with Windred in the sand.

Oh yeah... in the whole series, I haven't read Martin the Warrior, Legend of Luke or Long Patrol in years... too harrowing...
What with Rose's death, Luke's tragic voyage and the harsh reality of war against Damug Warfang (whom I also find a pretty underwhelming villain)...

Er yeah, that's Martin... In any case, according to Brian Jacques' book.
(Though personally, I believe Rose lived, but they kept quiet about it as part of the conspiracy to protect Noonvale)

Yeah, certainly one of the saddest things in the series - I guess it's that sad ending, the douchy character of Badrang, and the length of time it takes for the story to even move to its climax is what puts me off reading that particular book again...

Thanks very much for the fave!
Yeah, I really felt bad about the ending of that story too... not one of my favourite books, that one - partly for what happened to Rose and partly from the drawn-out narrative of Martin's journey to Noonvale (interrupted constantly by unnecessary filler-characters like those damn lizards and the snooty rabbits). I hate unrelated filler that slows down the main plot - if you've seen my Redwall Quiz journal (currently the previous to my most recent), you'll see I also hated the Flitchaye from "Mariel of Redwall" for slowing the story down.
As for Laterose, I've long had this pet-theory that the "real" version of the story had her survive, but this was blue-pencilled to protect Noonvale's secret location - instead, they spread the word of her death as the reason for Martin travelling southwards in a huge conspiracy...

Yeah... Thanks for the fave.
Well, I don't think I cried at the time - I was younger, I wasn't one for showing emotions.
Still, I have this pet-theory that Rose's death was an "alternate ending" - part of a big conspiracy to keep Noonvale a secret.
In reality, I like to think that she came out of a coma (from hitting the wall - I never could quite accept the fact she died from banging her head against a wall) and married Martin... the reason he still finished up in Mossflower and everything was that his restless spirit wouldn't settle down at the time, so he went travelling (and possibly she went with him, but her background was kept secret to protect Noonvale).

Heh, same here... I get too attached to my regular characters! Even my "originally a villain" character, Retsubnad (Danbuster's "evil twin" wizard brother) is more like an antihero these days - sad background and bond by an unshakable brotherly-bond so that they can't bring themselves to kill each other, despite having to sometimes fight each other. (since Dan must always foil Retsy's latest world-domination schemes)

With Retsubnad, I was never going to just kill him off... he's Danbuster's brother!
But certainly I'll need to make some new villains in the future - even if they're only one-offs and their fate is merely arrest and imprisonment for an uncertain period!

I seem to have more of a thing for villains you "love to hate", as opposed to ones you just hate.
How do I put it... like villains you can laugh at (Robotnik, Barbossa), respect in a way (Smaug the Dragon, Saruman) or somehow feel sorry for (Davy Jones)

I've always imagined that, after Rose's death, Martin became despondent, and over the course of a few weeks, sank so far into depression that he eventually hung himself, leaving a suicide note that said something like, "I go to be with Laterose of Noonvale. I love her more than life itself."
I know that's far from what really happened, but it describes how I felt about that book. I think if he had committed suicide, it would have actually been less cold and bleak an ending.

DCLeadboot In reply to RGzer0 [2009-04-02 15:07:23 +0000 UTC]
Heck, no... I don't like that idea at all!
I think the ending would have been even darker and more depressing if he'd done that!
The accounts of some of those Middle-Earth heroes in the Silmarillion made bleak enough reading as it was.
Anyway, if he had tried that, I reckon some of those departed heroes at Dark Forest would have barred his way - something along the lines of...
Lord Brocktree: Not yet, little warrior. You have much to achieve before you enter by these gates.
Rose: Be brave, Martin. Live for the sake of others. I can wait.
And now I'm brought to a closer appreciation of Martin's courage, in bearing up and moving on.
Actually, I have my own theory, which is much more optimistic than the idea of suicide and death.
I like to think that Rose actually survived and awoke from a coma - Martin and Rose were married and stayed at Noonvale for a time, but then decided to seek adventure, as his warrior's spirit just couldn't settle down there. So, to protect the innocent, (i.e. keeping Noonvale a secret) this version of the account was "blue-pencilled" and the historians left us with the belief that Rose died.
