The expression is perfect in the third panel, as his anger and shame can't be placed onto anyone else but himself. Later strips reveals he doesn't know how to use (or even reach) the washer, and Mom would be able to spot that he is wearing different clothes than he was when she left.
Yeah, this is probably one of his lowest points in the comic, but it's still adorable. Pretty much anything he does is adorable.

If the dog was a husky, it could have been named Nanuke, but since it is a small and fluffy dog, the name Justice seems kind of fair.

I'm reminded of a Green Lantern story arc, where he's on a quest along with Ganthet, a Guardian (one of those who made the Green Lantern Power Rings).Β Ganthet has to recover something important and dangerous which he was responsible for losing in the first place.
Hal Jordan (GL of Earth) comments "So the other Guardians punished you by making you go to recover the (item)?"
Ganthet replies something like, "Punishment?Β No.Β The (item) is my responsibility.Β To have denied me the opportunity to recover it would have been a true punishment."
So I think that Max would feel a little better if he were allowed, or able, to fix some of the "damage" by himself.
