How can you possibly doubt it? Of course the knight-captain wants the mages to be watched 24/7, no matter what. They might be doing blood magic in the bath or something

I dunno, I played my first round as a city elf and I couldn't get over how out of touch with reality he was. "Elves? Being mistreated in my kingdom? Why, I'd never heard of anything of the sort! D:" That didn't really win my heart XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

spiraledonista In reply to Ddriana [2011-05-19 22:27:15 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh well, you're right in that. He's too absent-minded to be a decent king. But his end (and his life, as I'm learning from 2nd book) has been very sad. He really seems still a kid to me. Stupid kid, but innocent too

Anyway I've played only as a dalish. Surely I'd be bitter about him being a Tabris

Ddriana In reply to spiraledonista [2011-05-20 12:17:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh? I haven't read the books, so I've only got the games to go by. There he seems... well, childish but somewhat sneaky too (Orleasian empress, sending Alistair off to light the fire...) but there's really nothing that endeared him to me. Compare to Loghain, who won my heart almost at once XD But I've always had a thing for good villains...

spiraledonista In reply to Ddriana [2011-05-20 13:07:12 +0000 UTC]

I won't say anything if you haven't read the books
In the game I found every character hard to understand since you can't have many informations, it's very realistic in my opinion.
I hated Loghain in the game but with the first book I've had the opportunity to understand him better. There's not really black or white, and that's pretty cool! And messy

Ddriana In reply to spiraledonista [2011-05-20 20:21:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but while you don't get a lot of information you do get a lot of hints, and a lot of the time I find that they really help to get to know the character without revealing too much. They did that a whole lot better in Origins than in DA2 though :/

Mahariel is awesome and I love Brosca. The Cousland pilfering the ashes is great as well. That's Amell at the top teasing Morgi-- so it's Surana in the tub. Excellent, excellent... *rubs hands together and cackles* Cullen is adorable, though I don't like the DA:2 Templar armor as much as the original. It looks gaudy where the other looked grand with all its embroidery.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ddriana In reply to BucklesInTheSun [2011-05-19 19:44:24 +0000 UTC]

The one at the top teasing Morrigan is actually female Cousland - we will do both male and female Cousland because their endings are so different. We haven't really decided if we're going to go with Amell or Surana yet and thus sneakily hid the ears XD

Haha, yeah, I like to think of the templar uniforms changing depending on the region, making both versions valid. One can only imagine what the Orlesian templars would look like...

BucklesInTheSun In reply to Ddriana [2011-05-19 21:57:50 +0000 UTC]

Heh, being a fan of Her Majesty, I'd say the male Warden got the better part of that deal. The whole Alistair wedding thing with my Artemesia Cousland made me opt to let the poor girl romance Ser Gilmore (Maker bless the modders) ever after. I'm not too fond of Alistair even if I don't exactly want him dead. Usually I have Alistair and Anora marry each other. It's good for Fereldan and keeps Eamon's dirty fingers out of Alistair's impressionable brain.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ddriana In reply to BucklesInTheSun [2011-05-20 12:20:04 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, Anora is one of my least favorite characters in the game. It was more a case of "give me the throne D<" than anything else.
I'm... not a fan of Alistair. After he dumped my poor city elf when she gave him the kingdom with poor excuses... no. A thousand times no D<

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BucklesInTheSun In reply to Ddriana [2011-05-20 13:32:49 +0000 UTC]

It was her throne, rightfully. She'd already been crowned and had been taking care of the country the entire time Cailan was lumping about like an idiot. Anora had every right not to trust the Warden and to act in the manner that she did-- especially if you tell her you're going to betray her. What is she supposed to do? Meekly roll over because you're heap big hero and you know best? She's actually been running Fereldan for years. You aren't her father-- whom she respects and allowed to take control during a crisis because Anora doesn't know anything about war-- and you're backed by that snake Eamon with all of his plots pushing forward an overgrown manchild to rule her country. I'd say speaking up at the Landsmeet is pretty tame considering how she could have reacted.

I didn't really like Alistair from the getgo. He annoys me. I didn't actively loathe him until he was screaming at me to kill Loghain or let him do it. My Warden is not butchering a man in front of his daughter, even if you cry and whine and stamp your foot, Alistair. Go console yourself on Anora's massive rack because the adults have work to do. I have killed Loghain (once on my "Cousland Marries Alistair" playthrough) and Anora's face when her father's blood sprays all over her broke my heart.

You really want your brain bent out of shape? Goldanna is one of my favorite characters and I'm super pissed at the books for implying a Warden woman is Alistair's mother rather than Goldanna's poor elven servant mother. What, writers? Is a little elven servant girl is not magical enough you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ddriana In reply to BucklesInTheSun [2011-05-20 20:32:47 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I don't question Anora's right to the throne. I merely meant that I wanted to get my hands on it, and that was the main reason for marrying her. Because the game wouldn't let me marry Loghain anyway T___T
On the other hand, while I loved Loghain from start to end, Anora I disliked fairly early and that only escalated. I think part of it might be that she shares the same motion pattern as Leliana, who got on my nerves WAY too much to be healthy. However, I always supported Anora, so having her claim that I was trying to kidnap her really rubbed me the wrong way.

Oh, Alistair... He's such a little whiner. There's going to be a multipage comic that details my first playthrough and dislike for him when I can find the energy XD
His hissy fit when you refuse to execute Loghain is just inexcusable too. Surely stopping the Blight is more important than your personal issues? That's the sort of thing that leads to him being sent to the Landsmeet in his undies - so Loghain can have his gear after the temper tantrum.

Well, I haven't read the books, so I can't really say anything about that. Goldanna... annoyed me because she was so stupid about things. Yes, you want money for your 52 kids, yes, I understand that you don't want to get to know this half brother of yours... but damnit woman, plan ahead. Even if he never becomes a king, chances are he can still send you money to help out. Pretend to want to get to know him at least -.-

BucklesInTheSun In reply to Ddriana [2011-05-21 16:28:44 +0000 UTC]

Hah. Smart lad. I tend to find different reasons for my various Wardens to like specific people. Of the non-mod companions Morrigan, Sten, Zevran, Oghren, Shale-- pretty much everyone likes them because I like them. Loghain is next, with about half and half like even though I think he's awesome--- but all believe him a necessity. Alistair, Wynne and Leliana are the least liked in the group of my Wardens. Only the chaste Andrastian Tabris likes those three to epic level-- and she'd really prefer if Alistair were a full Templar and Wynne wasn't a mage. But then again she'd rather be a Sister and tends to be preachy and terrified in equal measures. My least favorite companion is Leliana and that's mostly due to the fact that I've never truly felt comfortable with her at all. Sometimes I leave her behind completely and thank mods that I can bash locks off chests and such until Zev is available.

There is. There really is. lol-- I consider it a warning to Anora. "Sorry Babe, this one isn't much of an improvement over the other one."

Insensitive is definitely the word for Alistair. If you're a Cousland: "Let's go check on my family at Redcliffe, they can help us!" "But what about my brother Fergus, he's the Teryn of Highever now. If he's alive, he has more clout than an Arl." And he throws a tantrum "Well, I don't know where we should go then!"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ddriana In reply to BucklesInTheSun [2011-05-22 12:42:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh Leliana... my poor Cousland had to dump her twice, and she still wouldn't take the hint. That will teach him to give her anything (he was a complete asshat, so one would have thought that she wouldn't be interested in the first place).
Zevran is like a glorious gift of... glory or something XD But a damned liar. Picking locks, my ass... But put him next to Leliana and you forgive him at once and proceed to make him learn how to. At least he's fun.

Alistair and his insensitivity... if you romance him and play a city elf, it just reaches epic proportions. He finds out that you almost got married and has a *fit*, and when you explain that it was a) arranged, b) your would be husband is dead, and c) the marriage didn't take place due to rapists, he gives you a vague "oh, sorry". And that's it. He gets to whine to his heart's content but he shows no interest to talk about other people's issues. Oh. And then he dumped her like two days later. Such a loving man.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BucklesInTheSun In reply to Ddriana [2011-05-22 20:11:46 +0000 UTC]

Leliana is the only companion I've had fall in love with a Warden without ever picking flirty dialogue. If you have no other romances it seems that it assumes you are romancing Leliana even if you never had that intention. That was annoying.

About Zev. Sometimes I get him and he has no lockpick slots-- sometimes he has one. I have no idea if it's a mod doing that or what. I know on the xbox he has no lockpick slots. Yes, he is fun. He's a ray of Antivan sunshine on otherwise gloomy Fereldan days.

Oh, see, I've never romanced Al with a Tabris. I've only romanced him as a dwarf commoner, an elf mage and a Cousland. That was more than enough Alistair for me, lol.

He's not very nice to the mage either-- particularly if you talk to him about the Tower and are honest (picking the options that make him face reality), and then use the "my mother was murdered" option for your life before the Circle. He gets very upset with your Warden and doesn't want to talk anymore. He apologizes later with a couple words- I think he just says "I'm sorry for not being more sensitive" or something like that and goes back to that superficial courtly flirting he does.

Al hated my Brosca. Took him forever to warm up to her and I kept having to pump him with gifts because he disapproved of her honesty. By the time Oghren asked her about her rumproast she would have hopped in bed with him instantly, even as drunk as he was.

It irritates me that Alistair cares only about himself and his needs and his problems and you're not allowed to challenge him about it. You can only encourage him to be more selfish or tell him he's fine just the way he is- Oh, Alibear, mommy Warden wubs you. Don't cry! *gag* .

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ddriana In reply to BucklesInTheSun [2011-05-23 10:52:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, I wish it was that simple, but I was dating Morrigan in the beginning (it was amusing when I could lie to her about it and get +2 though), and then dumped her for Zevran - and Leliana *would not back off*. Even when I told her to go cook rather than listen to her babbling. I blame her obvious insanity.

Must be a mod... he never knows how to pick locks when I play with him. And he dies first in any major battle... oh Zevran... you are evidence that you don't have to be good at any thing and still be so fabulous that you get to come along at all times Seriously though, Zevran with all his issues never actually whines. In a world full of whiners, you just cannot help but to love him for putting on his big boy panties and deal with his issues rather than making everyone around him miserable.

Oh god yes... Alistair could use some big boy panties of his own. Shame they are apparently only for sale in Antiva... Sometimes it felt like I was the therapist of Ferelden. Granted, Hawke felt like the therapist of Kirkwall, and only Aveline had the humanity to sit down and talk about the horrible things that happened to Hawke. Probably because she was Fereldan...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BucklesInTheSun In reply to Ddriana [2011-05-23 14:58:25 +0000 UTC]

Damn. Yeah. Leliana's insane/evil. I do not trust her at all (especially not after seeing DA2 and having all my worst fears confirmed).

Dress him differently! Zevran does not do well in armor at all. Without mods you can put the Archon robes on him (you get those during Broken Circle), give him some good knives, and the Helmet of Honnleath! (Shale DLC. Also try juggling rings to give him some extra oomph.) Nothing can touch him because he's then far far too fast to get hit. I love watching him buzzsaw around the battlefield. --- I too was frustrated with Zev constantly dying, and I remembered looking at his promo art and he was wearing a robe. Lightbulb went off over my head and I switched his gear and he became an Antivan murder machine. Dressed as he is he took on a wraith (jacked up difficulty) that wiped out the rest of the party in the Brecillian Forest, by himself, and mosquito bit it into submission without taking much damage at all because it just couldn't hit him well enough.

Zev's big-boy panties, like the rest of him, are ridiculously awesome.

Yeah. I actually thought you had less whiny companions in DAO than 2. Just about everyone in Kirkwall seems to be out of their damned mind in one way or another. I can forgive some of it-- like Fenris is in constant low-level pain and so yeah, he's going to be bitchy. I'm bitchy when I'm in pain too (most people are).-- but the majority of it? No. Merrill and Anders imparticular drive me insane.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ddriana In reply to BucklesInTheSun [2011-05-24 15:36:56 +0000 UTC]

Hoho! I shall have to try that. Because there is no way I am playing through Origins without Zevran there to cheer me up XD He tends to die when the enemy sneezes when I play... but I also suspect that part of it is me being utterly crap at leveling rogues.

God yes. I find it interesting that out of all the templars in Kirkwall, *Cullen* is the sane one. Cullen who was sent from the circle in Ferelden because he was heading into bonkers territory and Gregoir didn't feel comfortable with him around the mages. Cullen who starts the game by telling you that mages can't be treated by people. Still the sanest of the templars. Oh, Kirkwall... you horrid place of crazy you...

BucklesInTheSun In reply to Ddriana [2011-05-20 22:07:41 +0000 UTC]

Ahh-- the main reason for marrying Anora for Griflet (my male Cousland) is to be closer to her. He's got something of a crush on the Queen (and Delilah Howe-- but since Delilah was taken from him by her father's treachery and Anora needed Griflet for a variety of reasons, most of which deal with legitimizing her through his bloodline and children, he agreed to marry Anora). He still cares very much for Delilah, but circumstances came between them and he would never stoop to Cailan's level to screw around on Anora nor shame Delilah by causing her to be unfaithful to her husband.

Yes. Lack of romance with Loghain saddened me as well. Then again, he's had a crappy couple years during DA. He may not be much in the mood for love until the Blight's done with. I think the game would have been better if they'd allowed (as the original idea) for the Landsmeet to be called in the middle of the game so you had time to get to know Loghain and really get things nailed down in Fereldan before the Archdemon showed up.

LOL. Go for it. Yeah, I just give Alistair Cailan's armor and send him off to Anora unless I'm playing Griflet. It's not like it's really great armor anyway.

I chalk up Goldanna's inability to milk Alistair for cash effectively due to her truthfulness. She may be common as a greasy coin and have a chip on her shoulder, but she's no liar (As she'd like to remind you fine patrons of her laundry service. The lady down the street is Orlesian and a cheat.) I also blame Alistair for being a total wiener about it. He didn't even try to be manly or tell her about the Blight or anything remotely responsible. He's like "well fine, you don't want me, I don't want you"-- instead of trying for real brotherly concern there. I mean geeze, he knew how much she suffered and didn't show up until he needed her anyway-- then he ads insult to injury by not even acting like a brother in her presence.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ddriana In reply to BucklesInTheSun [2011-05-21 14:12:52 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well, the only one who my Cousland genuinely liked in the whole game was his childhood hero Loghain. Zevran and Morrigan were alright, but they couldn't compete...

Haha, there is something so very morbid about dressing him up in his dead half-brother's armor and marrying him with same half-brother's widow XD Still, it amuses me to let him stand there and flail in his underwear, in front of the most powerful people in the land.

I don't think Alistair really has it in him to act... well... responsible and like a descent human being if his feelings are hurt. He displays some real douchbaggery throughout the game and is generally insensitive to the Warden's trauma. I rather take the misguided but repentant and responsible villain with me.

It would have been nice if they went the Seikendensetsu 3 route and let the other origins be your companions. Either that they are resigned to their fate or don't even exist (it's either Surana or Amell but not both).

That comment was so long ago I had to go back and see what you meant, lol. What I mean is, if you notice no matter what origin you pick there is evidence that they existed but just "missed the call" (except for Cousland but we'll get into that later). With the mage origin you can either be elf or human, Surana or Amell. If you choose to be Amell (human) there is no evidence whatsoever of there ever being an Surana (elf) anywhere in the circle. They both have the exact same origin story and an almost the exact same past bar slight differences with race. In effect the mage origin within itself is (kinda) known as a Schrodinger's Player Character . They don't mention the mage origin beyond assumptions if you don't choose it in that link but it does goes more in-depth with the Human Noble being the same thing.

Oh, I remember that game. Yeah, that would have been fun... but it would also have been difficult to give them some degree of firm personality without taking away the role playing aspect of the game. I do like that the other wardens exist, regardless of which origin you choose. It's just that all others die, because Duncan can only save one. It felt weird to loot my own corpse XD

Thank you, I'm still learning but it makes me happy that you think so
