So yeah, you guys wanted this one first.
To be clear, this tutorial, and anymore of them I decide to make, are intended purely as a design tutorial, and is only my interpretation of how these character/species should look, so yeah, if you disagree, be nice.

Okay so starting with the simplest sprite will let me get over the more general parts you may already know, before I complicate things.
So, Wolfs are kinda of seen as a darker sort of creature, and are viewed as anything from loyal pack creatures, to "Grim Omens" so when designing you character, you should keep that in mind, Use dull, faded colors, and try to make your "Fur Spikes" wild, and free, and not too spiked. Try and convey them as a natural, wild animal. While not necessary, White or grey muzzles, enlarged ears and sunken "shaded" eyes are a good way to differentiate from other species, but more unique qualities should be added later. Two things you'll see all three of my sprites have, are the mohawks and the tails. The tail being there is kinda obvious, But the mohawk adds some authenticity to the species, and help set it apart from other species, while it isn't necessary, it will help make you character look more unique.
Moving onto the second sprite, I've shown a different approach to the sprite, showing larger, more tame "Fur Spikes". Remember when making your character, a Wolf doesn't need to look wild to be wild, and vice versa. An extra step I've taken on this sprite, is connecting the tuft of fur on the sprites chest to his muzzle, giving an extra fluffy look to the sprite.
This is the best example I could create of a wolf using all utilizing all the advice given in this tutorial, showing wild and overgrown fur, larger ears and tail, and even a unique chest design, showing a more puffed out chest-fluff piece.

Well, for a first try, I hope you liked it. Perhaps if this gets enough favorites I'll auction off the characters. If it gets to 60 favorites, I will add drawn line-arts of them, though don't expect them to be amazing
