Description Sculpture: bronze.

A commission piece which is to be attached to the petrol tank of a custom-built Harley Davidson. The customer wanted an aggressive-looking scorpion, which was about to attack - I first built the model out of wax, which was then cast into bronze by a casting company. I then finished the cast and patinated it a bit to get some dashing highlight.

Sounds easy enough. Wasn't. The customer was very precise in the end of what he wanted and didn't want, even though originally I just had the topic (scorpion) and dimensions (about 12 centimeters in length). It took me something like six revisions of the original wax model to get it just right. Scorpions, by the way, don't have claws like that. Those are lobster-like claws. Also, the more venomous and dangerous a scorpion is, the thicker its tail is and the smaller the claws. I did a lot of research originally, but the customer had a fantasy creature in mind.

That's all right, customer is always right. Unless they complain about the bill.

Nope, I sent it out to be cast by professionals with both the skills and tools for that. I did do the finishing, though.

First off, that is kick ass. And for the most part you are right there aren't to many that have big claws and tails. Something like this is called a "serket" or "colossal scorpion" which are both mythical. I fear you may be missing a pair of legs as well as both a body and tail segment. Not that it matters because this looks fantastic. But I do have one question.
Do you still have the mold to make this or would you have to make it from scratch again?

Very nice work, most impressive! Actually, those pincers look very similar to those on an Emperor scorpion (Pandinus Emperator, I believe). I wonder how this would work as a shifter knob...

This is a stunning piece of Art. But it lacks one anatomical detail, Scorpions are arachnids, they have eight legs. The pincers are pedipalps... But besides that, it is phenomenal.

deaddamien In reply to KJK18 [2012-01-25 13:02:41 +0000 UTC]

Actually it did have eight legs - the frontmost ones are hidden behind the ridiculous lobster-claw-pincer in this photo. The whole thing would fall on its face if it didn't have those small front legs, I suspect.

Well spotted, though! And thanks!

Well done to you as a sculpturor and the same to the foundry.
IΒ΄m a metal finisher in bronze art foundry so I know what IΒ΄m talking about.
Excelent metalwork and patination with patience.
People canΒ΄t imagine what everything has to be done. It is not just cast it and itΒ΄s done.

The photo is great taken too btw
The reflection in the glass give it extra level

Oh wow, coming from a professional that means a lot to me, thank you! There really is a surprising amount of work in finishing a cast piece, but it is the kind of work that truly brings out the quality of the final piece.

Glad you approve of the photo too.

Thanks! Varying surface treatments do a lot when it comes to depth.

But I'll always be bothered by those lobster claws. Sigh.

Kyene In reply to deaddamien [2009-01-04 17:24:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh, nothings wrong with a different take on an existing creature. Anyone can make a scorpion, but only someone talented can make one with lobster claws that looks natural. XD

Gorgeous piece of work! and that was smart of you to do some research on the creature...even if the customer had their own design in mind. Great job! I take it you have a business in this kind of stuff?

Thank you! I do take pride in my researching abilities, whenever I get the chance to use them.

Indeed I am in the business for the like, though the scorpion was a bit larger than the stuff I normally make. I'm a goldsmith by trade.
