Description Sculpture: bronze.

A commission piece which is to be attached to the petrol tank of a custom-built Harley Davidson. The customer wanted an aggressive-looking scorpion, which was about to attack - I first built the model out of wax, which was then cast into bronze by a casting company. I then finished the cast and patinated it a bit to get some dashing highlight.

Sounds easy enough. Wasn't. The customer was very precise in the end of what he wanted and didn't want, even though originally I just had the topic (scorpion) and dimensions (about 12 centimeters in length). It took me something like six revisions of the original wax model to get it just right. Scorpions, by the way, don't have claws like that. Those are lobster-like claws. Also, the more venomous and dangerous a scorpion is, the thicker its tail is and the smaller the claws. I did a lot of research originally, but the customer had a fantasy creature in mind.

That's all right, customer is always right. Unless they complain about the bill.

Thats great work man - when you say petrol tank - do you mean the petrol flap? because the petrol tank is surely underneath the car?

Well, I don't know much about motorcycles, but that was what I was told - on the tank. You're thinking about a car, aren't you?

also, the thing about customers is that if they say they want something totally original... they don't. They always want it to look like something else, with hints of... in the style of... you know...like that....

eg I had someone say to me, create a spacecraft that looks like a Borg Cube... needless to say I told him where to go, and his bro made something in max that looked like a swiss-cheese cube

Meh... go figure

Great work hope the effort was shown in the bill

I wonder if they'd have been ok with a scorpion clawed animal, even if the claws were bigger than normal. It just looks awkward to me, having seen scorpions. I LOVE the look of the scorpion claws. They totally look better than lobster claws!

btw, I meant I prefer how real scorpion claws look instead of how lobster ones look on this one. I know this one is lobster-like claws, and I was just saying I thought scorpion claws would be better than lobster claws.

Oh, the thing had proper scorpion pinchers in the beginning, when it was still just a wax model. The customer said 'nuh-huh' and made me change the claws. Thrice.

Yeah, I got how you said he wanted them differently I was just saying I think real scorpion claws are totally badass, and lobster claws are pretty weak in comparison, particularly on the scorpion body. With the tail scorpions have lobster claws look so stupid, but on a lobster they're pretty cool, and I think scorpions are sweet anyway!

scorpians are arachnids right? so should it have 8 legs instead of 3 on each side? or do the claws count as legs?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

deaddamien In reply to devourerspawn [2006-10-25 15:51:17 +0000 UTC]

There are eight legs - the small front legs are hidden behind the claws in this angle.

Kudos, my friend. Kudos. I, too, thought it was a work of CG. Beautiful finish and detail, and I like it's fantastic features.

Oh, and as an amateur zoologist, I understand your woes. Scorpions are mistakenly judged by their aggressive appearance. Not many realize that, among animals and plants, the less extravagent you are, the more powerful you tend to be.

Still, it's a lovely piece. Congrats on its completion.

wow i've never seen anything like this before. personally i like the claws smaller and i think that that sculpture would look better with smaller claws but nevertheless it looks great. i love the detail, everything from the serrated claw insides to the highlighting.

great job

It looks so realistic, especially the pincers. On the other hand, the tail does it no justice. I'm picturing a sharp needle at the end like the ones you see at a doctor's office, except larger ofcourse.

But it's still so good. And I, too, thought it was CG.

Hydrart In reply to Negronomicon [2006-10-26 20:06:49 +0000 UTC]

considdering where the piece is mounted, would you want a needle sharp bronze metal object between your legs right at groin level?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Negronomicon In reply to Hydrart [2006-10-26 23:22:01 +0000 UTC]

not practically, no... but it would be as cool as hazardous to your health.

deaddamien In reply to Negronomicon [2006-10-25 16:06:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

About the the tail - it's a detail that gets lost in the angle of the photo. The stinger is as sharp as possible, but scorpions keep it folded below the tip of the tail, right up to the moment when they go and stab you on your foot. Apparently.

that's true, I have one (a emporer scorpion...named Clamps) he dose that, his tail is much longer though....but there are like a bajillion different kinds of em so I spose that they could be in pretty much any shape. by the way how much did you get?
