Description
Sculpture: bronze.A commission piece which is to be attached to the petrol tank of a custom-built Harley Davidson. The customer wanted an aggressive-looking scorpion, which was about to attack - I first built the model out of wax, which was then cast into bronze by a casting company. I then finished the cast and patinated it a bit to get some dashing highlight.
Sounds easy enough. Wasn't. The customer was very precise in the end of what he wanted and didn't want, even though originally I just had the topic (scorpion) and dimensions (about 12 centimeters in length). It took me something like six revisions of the original wax model to get it just right. Scorpions, by the way, don't have claws like that. Those are lobster-like claws. Also, the more venomous and dangerous a scorpion is, the thicker its tail is and the smaller the claws. I did a lot of research originally, but the customer had a fantasy creature in mind.
That's all right, customer is always right. Unless they complain about the bill.

Thank you for the compliments! I don't mind derivative works at all, thanks for mentioning it though - I'm always curious what people come up with.

Yeah, it wouldn't be something I'd embark on for myself, but the customer is always right, right?
Thank you. 'Specially appreciated when coming from a fellow crafter.

A beautiful interpretation. I once had a pet Scorpion, a large black fellow that we were told was an Emperor. He looked close to your sculpture, but with a thinner tail. I would've jumped on the first design you offered, judging by the research you put into it.

dhaz gutten I will treasure it
(I'm actually studying sculpture and I thought I couldn't get such amount of details in bronze related to this kind of bugs - pretty inspiring
)

Thank you muchly!
If you were wondering about the quality of detail in a casting process, it varies between methods and even materials. The highest detail can be reproduced by vacuum casting, in gold I suspect.

Wow, awesome Customers like to be picking don't they? LOL... But I guess you have to learn to live with it when you're an artist!

As a mass production piece in brass I would say it would be worth probably $10-$15.
As a limited edition production piece in bronze I would say it would be worth $100-$200.
As fully comissioned one off art sculpture in wax for apporoval I would value the piece at around $2000 for the development stage and an additional $2000 for the casting and clean up.
ART IS NOT TO BE SCOFFED AT!
For the Philistines who think something like this is just oh so easy to
build they should just go to their local hardware store and buy something to slap on their vehicle.

Stunning! You are GREAT artist! Wow! And, your description of the process with the customer is EXCELLENT . For the time and work you did, I think that is worth... $9,000 NOT including the cost for the material, and the casting cost. If it had only been 1 revision, then maybe as low as... $3,000.
So frustrating to hear that you had to bug them to get paid... I HOPE you had them sign a contract first. As much as that sucks to do, make sure your client signs a contract -with the due date for payment marked in bold (Get them to pay 20% upfront, and sign that contract, -before any work is done ).
Again, AWESOME!!!

I worked on the scorpy for... maybe fifteen days. It's hard to tell, I was working on other things at the same time too. And I did so many revisions of the designs that I lost count.
I charged them too little, that's what I did. Hmph.

thats great, i knew those claws werent right when i saw em, but i love them anyway. im very interested in sculpting in wax, what wax and tools did you use?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
deaddamien In reply to Bogamaz [2006-10-25 15:56:47 +0000 UTC]
Basic blue casting wax which came in a block was my medium of choice. Harder than yellow wax, but not as hard as green.
As for the tools, I started with a knife and a scalpel, joining the countless pieces with a bit of steel wire with the end flattened into a spatula, which was heated above a tea light. Poor goldsmith, no wax soldering iron.
I would also like to thank my micro motor, and my collection of files.
