I really like the concept you've built up around the horrors of World War One. While the characters armor and clothing does share similarities with how the soldiers and their medics dressed from that era (like the diagnosis pouches and the man's (or woman's?) boots).
You've added other features which gives it a bit of a steam punk and/or aΒ medievalΒ feel (the helmet that covers his/her face and the long robes covering the body). That you choose to leave the painted background as loosely and foggy is a good touch which helps in making the two figures moreΒ prominent in details and form.
Iβm not very experienced with digital coloring or art, but the only thing that I think stand out in a wrong way for me is that the child's knee socks looks a bit too transparent that I almost can see the ground behind them, but other than that thereβs nothing else so far I can see that may look strange.
