Description
Fossas are neat. They are like giant mongooses, and probably our best illustration of what the very early felids looked and behaved like. I discovered recently that I did not know how to draw them from memory (oh, I tried, but they turned out too dog-like or cat-like; most artists have gone through this annoyance). So I figured a portrait would make a terrific study, and also make good use of the ability to use dozens of layers in Photoshop Elements (and use them, I did!).Related content

Ah, thanks! Sometimes the hardest thing about drawing them is to quit staring at the sweet reference pics and just start drawing.

oh this is great! I think fossas are one of my favorite animals now!
with that big nose and the quite long tail they always remind me a bit of marsupilami..

Thank you! I agree, fossas are awesome. They are reminiscent of marsupials -- maybe it's the primitive look? Or the proportions, perhaps (they seem to have a much longer spine and shorter limbs than the usual placental mammal). I love seeing those five-toed paws (my mind still does a double-take).
