Description
Watercolor pencil and Prismacolor colored pencil. The subjects are two of the feral horses that lived in Mesa Verde National Park this year. They were part of a band of about eight horses, but it was clear that these two were special friends. The buckskin on the left is a stallion with grullo markings, nicknamed Pumpkin.Related content

This is stunning! I love it so much! I wish I could do equines well because I love horses so much but the anatomy is hard.., This is really nice!

Aww, thank you so much, Elleaux! Yeah, the inflexible bits of horse anatomy make them paradoxically easier and more difficult to draw. I think they are kind of alien at first, but then it becomes a little easier to imagine them in different poses (because they have less range of motion and fewer hidden joints than, say, a cat). I still struggle to imagine what it must feel like to have hooves.

No problem! I have a horse of my own I know the anatomy really well and can imagine different poses in my mind and everything, but it comes to drawing them, it's like I don't know them! Haha! I think im getting better at them but they are still a struggle!

Cool! That's really interesting how knowing the anatomy and getting it on paper are two different skill/knowledge sets.

Thanks, bscruffy. That's great to hear as feedback, because I think this was a time of peace and plenty for these two.

Gorgeous work Mango!
Especially the colouring on the horses! Horses are hard to colour because of all the contours or light and shading!

Thank you, lunagriff. I worked from a photo I'd taken for this one. Some of the contours (especially around her hips and femur) really surprised me. I don't know that I could draw it correctly from memory yet.
