Note: This piece contains spoilers for the Delta Episode of Pokemon: Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. It also contains spoilers for the main plot of Omega Ruby, and an OC trainer inspired by the author's choices in her copy of the game. Deal with it or get out.

Convection seared her, eyes burning, and she screamed as the heat engulfed her. The molten mess gave way to faint rocky brown walls and a blur of orange moving toward her scale model of Castelia. The burning pain remained a moment as reality set in.

“Emyr! It's ok! No one's here, unless you heard the doorbell!”

It turned its head to look at Carly, torso still leaned forward, helical arms still reaching into the entry.

“I was screaming because I had a nightmare.”

It stared at her with blank black eyes, unmoving.

“When humans sleep, we dream. We see things that aren't necessarily real.”

It lowered its arms and hovered, closing its eyes for a moment. Then it extended an arm, unzipping the helix just a little at the ends. She took hold and let it pull her to her feet.

“You dream, too?”

It nodded, the first gesture she taught it.

“It's funny we can be so different and so much alike.” Carly smiled. “So how did you like my bed? If it was comfortable, I can get a second one for myself.”

It looked back behind it, at the mattress recessed into the nook of the cavern, and started pulling on her hand again.

“I just woke up, I don't need to--”

It put two tentacles on each shoulder and pushed downward until she unlocked her knees and sat on the mattress.

She growled, and it let go.

“The ground was fine. That mat is softer than it looks. And it's not like sleeping on hard surfaces prevents nightmares anyway.”

It gave her that blank stare again, seeming to peer into her soul, and she wondered what it was thinking.

“That thing with you flying through space? That was not my first rodeo. It was not even my first rodeo of the week.” She slumped, still sitting. “I am exhausted, and not entirely in ways that sleeping is going to help.”

It spun on one pointy leg and folded its body, sitting beside her on the soft mattress, triangular legs sticking out. And it stared.

“I did this grueling Pokemon gym circuit thing to impress my dad. And then I had to stop Team Magma from destroying the planet with Groudon. And then I went after the Pokemon League, because everyone said, 'you've come this far, Carly, why not?' Then my parents started setting me up with every boy in Hoenn except the one I like, and I had to run all over finding stones to bust that comet you were in the day after I won the League, and I got shunted to that so-called resort, and--”

Something slimy touched her lips, and she stopped talking, startled. Then the tentacle left her face and wrapped around her, another rising to stroke the top of her head.

“Stop that. I'm supposed to be taking care of you.”

I don't give critiques often, what with the whole not able to string 100 words together about the piece thing I seem to have. This on the other hand, leaves me with far too many words and leaves me feeling rambley.
From Deoxys tilting his head to Carly growling, all of it was perfect. I could feel her frustration at all this stuff she has been through, only to have more piled on top. I could practically see Deoxys floating about doing his thing. Every word was used just right. None too soft or too harsh.
Going to space, defeating the Elite Four, and having to take down an evil organization, all of it takes it toll on a person and in this case all of it was beautifully written without glamorizing or demonizing it. Words can't describe how amazing this is, because those words stand up on their own.

Oh gosh, shucks. You're so kind. I wasn't sure about this piece at all and I'm glad you like it. Thanks.

From the standpoint of someone who is not a reader in this fandom, I think you've done an excellent job with this piece. You've managed to convey the care the pokemon has for its trainer as well as demonstrate the mental strain that falls on a trainer after so many excursions. Nicely done.

Thank you! I'm glad that information came through out of context. I'm always amazed at how much rests on the shoulders of 10-15 year olds in these games, but the newest game really cranks that to 11. Not only does the protagonist deal with more unrelated world-threatening crises than in any previous game, with less direct assistance, but she also has her tender age emphasized so much more by NPCs than any other game... even the people she's fighting. I know most of the students I've taught who are a couple years older than that couldn't handle that, and I don't know that I could, either.

My only regret for you, reading this out of context, is that you wouldn't know how alien that particular Pokemon is relative to other species, nor the particularly tense circumstances by which the player character came to possess him. I'm elated that the piece worked even without that knowledge. Thank you!

...aaand now I can't stop drawing parallels between Deoxys and Mewtwo. I guess the most obvious one is the fact that the former is mute, allowing for some ambiguity in his motivations, if not his actions. Interesting how that fact comes in handy when words can't really help things at all.

I have to admit that I'm drawn to the two for similar reasons, although in the game continuity, they're not as close as you'd think. What Deoxys lacks in excuses to wangst, it makes up for in how alien it is. Still, to the average Pokemon protagonist, they certainly would seem similar. I know I"m not reading any new territory, but I've written more about Deoxys this week than I have about anything since Mewtwo in the same time period, so I'm happy. I'm glad you like the story, though! Thank you.

Yer most welcome, and a totally otherworldly viewpoint always makes things a little more... relevant and identifiable, since everyone else suddenly becomes a lot more human in comparison.
