I really liked the reflection, but you noted in other comments that you showed it to people and they didn't see it was a bridge. I think that's because we don't see the underside of the bridge much in the reflection- it looks like it's barely a... I think, about a foot wide (a foot is 12 inches is 30 cm, right?), while a bridge is more likely to be three or four feet wide. The above-water section hints at the bridge being that wide, but it's not reflected, which makes it slightly disconcerting.

Apart from that, another thing to note is that the reflection looks more... 'realistic', for want of a better word, than the rest of the piece, which is also a little confusing.

BUT IT'S STILL FREAKING AWESOME.

You are really good at giving critique, you know that? I was just sort of blindly copying the picture and not thinking, a dangerous thing to do with a freaky medium like pastels. I really need to give more thought to the media on these lessons... If I understood the technical limitations of pastels, maybe I would have understood some of the things you pointed out.

Thanks a lot. This is really, really helpful, and I"m in awe of how nicely you said it. I'm still kind of annoyed with an asshole critique I got from someone else, so this is really refreshing.

I like the reflection. It's very nice and the curve looks just right. It looks good.

Huh... I like it a LOT, this is a wonderful piece, and I love the color selection!

Thanks! In fairness, the colors were kind of picked for me. There was a limited number of pastels, less than are available in free paint mode.Β

You like warm colors and at an at least nominal respect for the idea of photorealism, even if it isn't executed perfectly?

It is a lovely landscape.
A inverted bridge that reflects in a calm surface of a river is very wonderful!

I think that your picture is a reallyΒ lovely picture.
I think it is very difficult though the theme of advanced course is very wonderful.

I am still doing the lesson of Watermill.
The lesson ends a little more.
(Please look at the profile picture)
I also learn you, and I want to do my best!!

You're still working on the watermill? Here I would have thought it was done, because the version you have is perfect! I mean, wow. It almost looks like a photograph!

I'm very flattered by your words, but there isn't much to learn from me, just learn from Vince! You're already far better at photorealism than I am.

FUJIAOI In reply to DecepticonFlamewar [2013-07-19 16:55:13 +0000 UTC]

I am glad to say to you so!

However, I think that there are a lot of things learnt from your picture!!

First of all, it is coloring.
Orange, khaki, and green.
It was felt that I was a calm midafternoon.
And, it is the entire touch above all.
Because the whole is drawn by soft touch, it is felt that it is comfortable like it is in the dream.
And, the looking person will be untied from the tension, and be invited to the flow of leisurely hours by the synergy effect of coloring and touch.

It is neither thing in my picture with.
My picture might suppress the success to some degree as a result of trying and erring to express it as seen.
However, how when taking a survey of the whole?
Neither coloring nor touch are united.
I think that my picture is odd.
I think that it is because the one "My drawing style" has not established me.

I want also to pile up the lesson more like you!
And, it comes to be able to draw "One's own picture" that what can tell through the entire picture!!

Oh, dude, shucks. (A quick check on Google translate tells me it can't translate shucks into Japanese! That's sad. It's something you say when you are flattered. ^^*)

I'm really glad you found my picture soothing! I tried to capture the quiet, wispy feeling I get from long grass. There used to be a big field behind my house, and I would go out there, and stand on a big rock and just look at it stretch out toward the train tracks. I remember the feel of the lake air, because I'm so close to Lake Huron, just far enough away to avoid the worst of the storms.

It makes me really happy to think I was able to kind of share a feeling through a picture. Hearing that my color choice was part of that makes me happy too... since my father is color blind. I'm not, but I think it makes my color vision stranger than my mother's. I've always thought i was bad with colors.

But your picture is really incredible.Β  Even in the thumbnail, I feel like I'm actually there! Such depth and proportion; you've captured the feeling of looking up at a building and wondering what could be inside. My picture has feeling, but yours has a story!

I think that your coloring is really very wonderful.
It is very warm, tender coloring, and I love this world that you produce very much.
Also near your house, there is a place where a calm, quiet air like this picture can be felt.
However, it can not be necessarily expressed even in familiarity each other!
I think that you who can express it are very wonderful!!

There is a story in my picture.
What a glad word it is!
However, I think that there is the world in your picture!!

Why you're not "happy"?
It looks very nice!
(I can't make something like this, I'm to young)
But what is for you not good on this drawing?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DecepticonFlamewar In reply to shadzfox [2013-07-17 19:50:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Compared to what I've done even a few months ago, it is very good, but compared to say, Grace, it's not. Numerous friends I showed it to couldn't tell it was a bridge. I'm not happy with the fade on the shadows on top of the bridge, the depth and tone of the shadows under the bridge, or the next bridge in the background. Not to mention the little round things on the bridge. Or the tree next to it.

I guess I just wanted it to be more photorealistic. It's actually kinda for a competition in my group, and I don't think it's appropriate to compete unless you want to win, you know? I can't win the prize, but I give the prize to the runner up anyway. Plus, I feel like since these guys KNOW I cut myself out of the competition first, if I do a really good one, it'll inspire the others to try.

SO I guess you're right. It is pretty decent. I'm just a perfectionist as bad as Sonic himself.Β

Thanks for the encouragement. I really needed that.Β
