Personality: Some Covenant Separatists used to wonder why Rankor was ever even on their side. His disposition is much more suited to the Desticrons. After all, he values power and strength over wisdom and compassion, and furthermore, he doesn't really get along with most Separatists. When faced with a problem, his usual responses are to smash it until it's a wreck, slice it with his sword, tear it to pieces with his bare hands, or outright eat it. He is more willing to accept casualties than most leaders, and doesn't seem particularly concerned about morality either.
Rankor is a member of the Rexaur species- a T-Rex like race hailing from the planet Dynast. Rexaur are the self-appointed 'kings' of Dynast and are by far the most aggressive and dangerous of all the dinosaur like races on Dynast. Rankor however, is more than an ordinary Rexaur, for he is intent on making it known that he is the strongest Rexaur (and strongest thing) alive, and by extension is 'King' of the Rexaur species and of pretty much anyone who claims to hold great strength. While it remains to be seen if Rankor is King of the Strong, he certainly is one of the angriest individuals in the galaxy and his thunderous, bellowing angry roar pretty much characterises that. Rankor's anger management has, how we say, failed. Miserably. Even before experiments were done on him that enraged him, Rankor always had immense trouble keeping calm and has arguably never been at peace with himself his entire life. Now, after the experiments, Rankor seems to operate on a 'rage meter' and now his chatoic outbursts seem to appear more and more emotionally and psychologically painful and his strength increased to incalculable levels once he is at his angriest. This 'Enraged Rankor' is totally without logic and has no self control, acting only off of impulse alone. Some have theorised that these outbursts are deeper than that, and whenever he reaches this stage, he becomes a reflection of a younger, more ignorant Rankor abused by the Covenant oppressors who conquered Dyanst, which is the source of his extreme rage and resentment from which this dynamic strength is derived.
What people don't realise is that the only thing he hates more than weakness is those who abuse their strength, meaning when push comes to shove, Rankor will always fall in on the right side of the fence.
Surly and disobedient, Rankor is always at odds with authority. And views Thora 'Marumee as a weak leader, too afraid to make the tough calls and act on instinct. As such Rankor is more than ready to disobey orders if he thinks the ends will justify the means. Despite their disagreements, Rankor holds a modicum of respect for Thora 'Marumee's strength and leadership, however much he may dislike it. His real feud within the ranks of the Covenant Separatist is with the uptight commanding officers unwilling to let him go wild and right into the action, because doing so would mean total chaos.
His one obvious redeeming feature is his attachment to his team. As leader of the Volacanic Strike Counter Force, he has gathered together a group of fellow Dynast-born, similar minded individuals he would do anything for. Together they handle the jobs that others simply don't have the stomach for and committed to doing their own thing their own way!
Desticron Scientist Rassaag 'Xytarg's experiments on him not only granted Rankor a larger size, but increased his already stupendous strength and power tenfold. Unfortunately this was at the cost of his (admittedly limited) intelligence. While he is far from stupid, Rassaag's experiments have made it more difficult for the former field commander to think rationally and made his already prominent rage issues all the more severe. Fortunately his team, reborn as the Clobbernauts/Vulcanauts (whichever name you like the best), have become more tight-knit than ever. Together they are helping overcome his disgust at what Rassaag has done to him and see the advantages of his new power.
Rankor claims to have been around since the 23rd Century, when the Covenant first discovered Dynast and conquered it. Some sources claim that Rankor was the self-appointed 'King' of Dynast and others claim he was a warrior, a gladiator, and others even just a recently-hatched Rexaur. Some more trustworthy sources (albeit still vague) claim that Rankor came about during the 24th, and others in the 25th Century- claiming that he was but a young child, or at least had the temperament of a young child despite being already 12ft tall and immensely strong as a result of being a Rexaur.
But regardless of which source one chooses to believe, all the sources agree that Rankor was born on Dynast and that he was very quickly subjected to abuse and pitted in slavery-style gladiatorial battles almost as soon as he was taken by Dynast's Covenant oppressors.
For years, Rankor suffered painstaking physical and mental abuse from Covenant military warriors and troops tasked with keeping the beast-like population of Dynast under control. To keep Rankor under control, Rankor was often energy-tethered to walls, electro-shocked, beaten by other Rexaur or peppered with plasma fire. Rankor was also forced to participate in gladiatorial matches between other members of the Dynast population, beasts, monsters and Heretics. Rankor won all his battles, though he physically suffered in almost every one.
It was not until Rankor was pitted against Gorvag the Voracious- a massive, hulking Rexaur who claimed to be 'King' of Dynast and the strongest one there was that Rankor was noticed for something more than his race. Rankor was expected to lose his battle with Gorvag, but Gorvag was amazingly defeated by Rankor who was able to smash his ribs and bring him a crippling defeat. After a suspicious checkup by a physician, it was learned that Rankor was Point One Percenter- meaning he was naturally stronger, physically and genetically superior to most in his fellow species. This also meant that common diseases would not bind him.
Rankor was sent to Karrovar on High Charity, where he appeared as 'The Clobbering Beast' who downed some of the strongest and most famous gladiatorial champions ever known to the Covenant. Rankor killed many a beast and successfully smashed hundreds of great warriors.
Whilst fighting in the arenas of High Charity, Rankor still suffered massive amounts of abuse and was continually tortured by his detainees. The unceasing pain and misery he felt as a result of this torture seeded massive amounts of rage and anger in Rankor- levels of which were paranormal even for a Rexaur. Rankor had great resentment towards those who made him feel this way, and had intense ideas of what he wanted to do to them, but ultimately couldn't do. As a result of his massive success, Rankor constantly declared that he was 'King' of the arena, developing a complex where he soon believed he was King over all beasts, warriors and Rexaur.
It came as somewhat a relief when he was removed from the pits, but this was just to put Rankor in the Covenant military as a secret commando to take on some of the most dangerous and covert operations ever conceived. Whilst serving in this 'Storm Unit', he fought as a warrior for years, although not always an obedient one. He was languishing in a military brig after angering a field commander when he met a fellow detainee: the sarcastic Trikon- a member of the Trinarl, a Triceratops like species from Dynast, and started swapping stories. Trikon had conned a Sangheili Zealot into a frontal assault, so Trikon won the conversation. Rankor thought Trikon sounded like a good guy, and the two of them discussed the formation of their own rule-breaking strike team, the Volcanic Strike Counter Force.
After being freed, Rankor formed the Volcanic Strike Counter Force, enlisting others from Dynast: The Sarcastic and Snarky Tactician Trikon, The Free-Spirited, Sensitive Scout Skol- Member of the Swerok, a humanoid pterodactyl like race; The Savage and Murderous Predatorial Demolitionist Khaox- Member of the Skor, a spinosaurus like race, The Quiet, Self-Isolating Medic and Engineer Ryk- Member of the Vanasaurians, a Stegosaurus like species and finally The Otherwise Dim-Witted Attention Seeking Logician Brovos- the only member of the Counter Force not originating from Dynast- instead being a Sharquoi who could relate to his fellow Strike Force members as being treat like a monstrous beast by their superiors in the Covenant.
Rankor and the Volcanic Strike Counter Force would go on to conduct secret operations as a covert commando unit, carrying out over 200 missions under the command of Zealot Nomil 'Korumee and receiving numerous commendations. When the Human-Covenant War started, the Counter Force became the ultimate secret weapon against human foes, and nobody- Marines, ODSTs, Spartans, ever lived to tell the tale of these dinosaur-like individuals.
The Volcanic Strike Counter Force served in the Fleet of Unstoppable Carnage once, with the only two people in the fleet who knew about it being Supreme Commander Thora 'Marumee and Fleetmaster and Special Operations Commander Rykas 'Refumee. During the Fleet's invasion of Kroedis II, the Force was dropped from a Lich into the jungle surrounding a very well fortified ONI facility believed to be coordinating planetary defenses. When they made it through the jungle, Rankor ordered Skol to take to the skies and scout out the facility for weak points to break through, but Trikon and Brovos decided to storm the facility anyway, with Trikon arguing that they had already discussed tactics and now was the time to battle. The attack was successful, everyone inside the facility and the UNSC Army soldiers called to help defend it were all killed, except for two people- General Earnest Thompson, who saw all his troops massacred by the Strike Force, and his daughter- scientist Jane Thompson who witnessed their raw strength and power first hand, and as a result of Rankor's smashing, knocked her into a coma. Shocked and horrified, General Thompson carried his daughter with a broken arm to a Warthog whilst running from the facility and escaped in the Warthog whilst Rankor and Khaox tried to chase him down and failed.
Rankor was angry with Trikon and Brovos, calling them 'dumb' for their abandonment of the role as a covert force. Rankor berated them that they had compromised their status and nobody was supposed to survive to tell the tale of their existence. It was only because of Skol's deliberation that Rankor calmed down and decided to take a chance, believing that hopefully it wouldn't matter that a General knew of their existence as the UNSC HIGHCOM would probably just assume that the Force was made up of different kinds of Mgalekgolo Hunters.
Years later in 2552 when the Great Schism began, Rankor and his teammates found solace in the Covenant Separatists who allied with the UNSC. Led by High Councillor Zeor 'Petumee, Supreme Commander Davroah 'Senuth and Supreme Commander Thora 'Marumee, Rankor had always been inspired by the words of Thora 'Marumee, who cared deeply for equality and had campaigned for it for years in the Covenant. Rankor believed 'Marumee would be a good leader to serve under, alongside Zeor and Davroah.
The Force joined the Covenant Separatist and their existence was made more known for the first time, though the Separatists had conflicting feelings about letting the UNSC learn about them. Regardless, they participated in several commando operations in the War for High Charity against both the collapsing Covenant Hegemony and Turok Nar 'Mdragath's Desticron movement. However, as time dragged on and Thora was placed in command of the Separatists after Zeor's death, Rankor and the other members of the Force began to question 'Marumee's leadership skills and became critical of his desire to opt for more moral, peaceful options. Rankor didn't care for such things, so the attractiveness of the Desticron Revolution grew in his eyes. Thora preferred playing the long game, but Rankor felt that caution would hinder their attempts at quick victory.
Driven over the edge by Thora's conservative tactics, he grew impatient and broke more and more rules with the Counter Force, who didn't care for Thora's strategies. Rankor formed a distaste for Thora as a leader and nearly joined the Desticrons they were fighting against, as he saw their leader Turok as the kind of leader who could make the hard decisions, as well as for the reason that he wanted equality among the masses just as much as Thora. But Rankor had always hated abuses of power much more than misuse of it, and Ryk reminded Rankor of this when the force observed Desticron soldiers treating prisoners cruelly and Turok speaking like a dictator. Convinced that Thora's side was right even though it wasn't able to get the job done effectively, Rankor agreed to stay with the Separatists.
During a mission, 'Marumee ordered the Counter Force to return to base and abandon a battle, lest they waste precious resources. Rankor reluctantly obeyed. However, when it was discovered that Skol was in Desticron custody, Rankor ignored 'Marumee's orders, abandoned their post, broke ranks, and the group stole a dropship and went after their captured teammate on their own.
Rankor and the others travelled to Skol's last known location in the Sea of Merciless Corrosion- a region on High Charity known for being contaminated by a massive outbreak of a corrosive microorganism, and fought through wave after wave of surprisingly strong and unique Yanme'e drone breeds, and finally reached the mastermind behind Skol's disappearance, Desticron Chief Scientist Rassaag 'Xytarg, who had deliberately lured them there alone in order to take them as prisoners and avail himself of their infamous hardiness by using them as victims in his experiments. As the others were overwhelmed by Rassaag's 'Hivrocrons', Rankor struggled free of the creatures to engage 'Xytarg himself, and managed to land a single blow on the Desticron scientist, only for Rassaag to reveal he had knowledge of Rankor's species and his particular body that allowed him to exploit its many weaknesses... weaknesses that Rankor wasn't even aware he had. Rankor was swiftly felled by the surgery-like precision of the scientist's attack. As 'Xytarg, the first individual to ever successfully beat Rankor in battle explained that Rankor had been tricked to leave the front lines so that the Desticrons could overwhelm the remaining UNSC/Separatist forces, Rankor tried to retaliate, only to be distracted by his teammates being tortured at 'Xytarg's command. Assuring him he would be broken, Rassaag then strung up Rankor and called forth 'Shellshock'. Rankor would discover that 'Shellshock' was the name given to one of the few independent Hivocron Yanme'e who was a brawler and demolitionist of Rassaag's new 'Bruiser' breed of Yanme'e. Shellshock then beat Rankor into unconsciousness.
Awakening in Rassaag's laboratory, Rankor soon found his entire body painfully disassembled by the scientist's machines, kept alive through the use of life support devices, in the service of a twisted experiment to create the perfect soldier with incredible physical power and limited intellect. His mind fragmenting, Rankor struggled against Rassaag's mental conditioning, refusing to succumb to his control. While all members of the team were experimented on, Rankor's change was the most extreme. 'Xytarg genetically modified his brain and rerouted a large amount of the energy going to his brain in order to boost his already impressive physical strength.
Once the change was complete, Rankor was more powerful and durable than almost any other Rexaur, and by extension, any other known sentient creature, but the changes left him mentally impaired, limiting his ability to think. In order to control him, 'Xytarg placed a micro-inhibitor in Rankor which prevented him from breaking free. The torture Rankor suffered during these experiments was far worse than any he had previously experienced from his Covenant oppressors who forced him to fight in the arena or slave away, and the worst part was that 'Xytarg was totally unphased by it, emotionless. He simply let his independent Hivrocrons- Shellshock, Crucify and Extortion torture Rankor as they pleased whilst forcing Rankor to undergo intense stress-tests. Rassaag also tested his powers of Dark Alchemy on Rankor, using everything from Dark Lightning to dark blasts and pressure-crushing abilities, including them as special stress tests. As a result of this, Rankor developed the deepest hatred he had ever felt and would ever feel for Rassaag.
Following a pain-based test, Rankor was left strung up in the lab, restrained and was approached by the recently-ousted Desticron Second-in-Command Starnam 'Screm, who offered to free him if he would destroy Turok Nar 'Mdragath for him. After getting no response for a while and only Rankor's growls, 'Screm foolishly took the first step and deactivated the inhibitor in Rankor's body which left him powerless to escape, believing it merely limited Rankor's ability to communicate, and Rankor exploited Starnam's hubris to effect an escape under his own power and proposed a counter-offer: grabbing the less than cautious Starnam and using him as a projectile to smash the control console, allowing him to break his own restraints. Now free, Rankor made his way through the tower Rassaag conducted his experiments in leaving a path of destruction and dead bodies in his wake. But whilst fighting, he acknowledged that nothing felt right and that it was hard to think. He also let out far more anger than he had ever done before even as a gladiator and was now stronger than ever. He felt that he had forgotten all the techniques he had mastered with his massive red-bladed war-sword and shield, but it mattered not to his destructive power, as all the guards who tried to attack Rankor found themselves either smashed, sliced, torn to pieces or even eaten.
He eventually managed to track down and free Skol at last, who was now able to fly faster and higher than ever before in addition to being stronger. Rankor was perturbed to see Skol's personality remained more or less the same whereas he could barely think rational thoughts anymore. It didn't help that Skol greatly enjoyed his new, evolved form and that unlike Rankor, Skol couldn't remember the torture they had endured. The two reached a room where Rassaag had experimented on Hivocrons and Rankor examined the consoles where 'Xytarg narrated all he could about his special breeds of Yanme'e. Whilst Skol understood these narrations perfectly, Rankor found them hard to understand. Despite not being highly intelligent beforehand, Rankor felt that in the past, he would've been able to get the gist of everything being said, but he didn't, and got angry enough to use a saw to cut one of the big 'Bruiser' Yanme'e beetles that was on a surgical table in two and smash through the life-support tanks of Yanme'e being tested on, killing them.
The pair attempted to track down Trikon and Khaox, but just before reaching his containment lab, they were intercepted by Shellshock who tried to slow them down using a mounted turret. Working together, Skol and Rankor defeated the Hivocron and Rankor slammed Shellshock's face into a console, the console scanning Shellshock's eyes and opening the door for them. Rankor then told Shellshock to "Wake up from that" in anger at Shellshock's constant beating of Rankor during his torture.
Arriving at Trikon and Khaox's lab, they found a massive tunnel leading to the depths of the tower, where the Hivocrons were feeding on unlucky Desticron soldiers. Separated from Skol, Rankor was taunted by Rassaag and Extortion.
Enraged, he chased Extortion down before being attacked by a giant Bruiser. Rankor defeated it, but Extortion's taunts about his defeat in the Sea of Merciless Corrosion angered him to such a degree, he went into a state of burning rage and roared a loud, bellowing roar at Extortion, the likes of which made the entire room shake and make the manipulative Yanme'e stumble and fall.
Rankor then went on a mindless, anger-driven rampage, making short work of Extortion's forces, he drove the Hivocron to retreat...straight into a collapsing door, brought down by Trikon and Khaox. Reunited, Rankor, Khaox and Trikon made their way to the exterior base of the tower where they met with Skol. The trio then travelled through the Hivocron infested area, eventually stumbling upon Ryk, who was trapped in a forcefield and being tortured by Crucify, another one of the independent Hivocrons. While Trikon and Skol tried to free Ryk, Rankor and Khaox battled the Hivocrons and brought down the forcefield generator. They then used electricity to torture Crucify, and left him in disrepair. At Trikon's suggestion, they made their way to a place where Ryk could be treated.
The group made their way to an observation deck which not only oversaw Rassaag's space bridge, but contained files on the new, stronger and evolved forms 'Xytarg had forced upon them, including the one he had planned for the missing Brovos, who the team couldn't find, assuming he was dead. Against Rankor's counsel, the team threw away their previous name of the Volcanic Strike Coalition Force and changed it to the Clobbernauts- for their old, less evolved technique of simply smashing through their problems, but Rankor said that he wanted to call them at the very least Vulcanauts, sparking an argument which ended in everyone else saying Clobbernauts and Rankor saying Vulcanauts.
In the lab, Trikon revealed the tower's purpose in using slipspace to transport Desticron forces and resources from another planet not known within human or Covenant space- a planet named 'Dorkmund Ravaas' along with a few other worlds. Against Rankor's wishes, Khaox contacted Thora 'Marumee. Rankor updated Thora but refused to rally together with him when he requested it, deciding that the Vulcanauts/Clobbernauts would handle things their way. Unfortunately, 'Xytarg activated a slipspace bridge for more Desticron forces and Rankor was thrown into the air by the resultant winds. Saved by Skol, he was transported close to the control centre of the tower before the winds became too much, separating them.
Crashing into the tower, Rankor fought through Desticron forces surrounding Rassaag and whilst pinned down by heavy gunner fire, Rankor was contacted by Ryk who said that they couldn't come and help him so he had to come to them. Rankor said that he wouldn't because this was his chance to get his revenge on Rassaag. Trikon told Rankor that they needed him because the winds, coupled with the Desticrons' fierce occupation of orbit around High Charity meant that if they tried to escape in a ship, they'd be brought down somehow and they had to somehow make it on foot back to the Golden City where Separatist forces were evacuating troops. Rankor said that they'd never make it on foot and that he had no intention of going back to serve under Thora anyway, with Khaox and Skol agreeing that they'd never make it on foot. Rankor continued to push upwards through the enemy resistance, slaughtering more Desticron soldiers as he tried to come up with a plan of action so they could survive.
With the situation worsening by the second, Rankor realised that the Desticron ships at the tower must be able to withstand the winds and would be marked as allies by the Desticron fleet, so he told his Vulcanauts/Clobbernauts that he was going to get one of the ships himself, refusing to fallback.
Rankor learned from the Desticrons who were barking orders at each other in the battle that if they let Rankor through, he could take the console Rassaag was working at and use the weather-pattern control systems to force the winds to destroy the Desticron ships and then the tower. Rankor, surprised that he could still connect such dots in his head, realised that if there were weather pattern control systems that could be used to destroy the ships, they must also be able to guide the ships through the slipspace winds. Rankor then came up with a new plan and told his teammates to get aboard one of the ships whilst he pushed up to Rassag's position, telling them that he'd stay behind to guide them out safely. But the other Vulcanauts/Clobbernauts realised that this would mean Rankor wouldn't be able to go with them, and Skol protested, telling Rankor that they'd find another way and constantly saying that he didn't have to do it, but Rankor was determined to save his beloved friends from dying and gave them the final word that this was his choice.
As the Vulcanauts made their way aboard one of the Desticron ships, Rankor tried to sneak up on Rassaag, but found himself faced with Shellshock, Extortion and Crucify who battled him whilst Rassaag communicated with the ships he was transporting via the slipspace tower. Extortion was able to cut Rankor's skin whilst Crucify turned massive amounts of electicity on Rankor and shocked him, inflicting more pain than ever because now it was Crucify's intent to kill him instead of merely stress test him. Rankor however, muscles through and pain and roared, going back into a state of rage as he threw his sword into Crucify's body, impaling and injuring the Desticron and causing him to drop the device he used to electrocute him. Rankor stood over Crucify and blasted Extortion with the device, shocking him intensely and taking him out of the fight. Rankor was about to move up on 'Xytarg but was then caught off by Shellshock, who rammed into Rankor and tackled him, battling him in a smashing brawl. Rankor turned up the device to full power to electrocute Shellshock, but Shellshock's natural body armour seemed to protect him and made him impervious to it, so Rankor dodged Shellshock's explosive cannon shells and then used his massive tail to whack Shellshock down and then beat him mercilessly. Shellshock blasted Rankor with cannons however and managed to get him off himself. Rankor charged him and ripped off his back-cannons, then proceeded to toss Shellshock into a building, smashing him through the walls.
Rankor, finally finished, then made his move on Rassaag at last, but as he tried to charge him, he was then caught in plasma restraints that Rassaag had left as traps. The restraints grabbed his legs, his arms, wrists, even his neck and tail and didn't seem to break. Rankor tried his best but he couldn't seem to break through. As Rassaag finalised procedures with Turok, a furious Rankor realised that Rassaag had reactivated his inhibitor. Viewing the inhibitor as a symbol of all the torture and abuse he had suffered his entire life, Rankor burned with hate and his 'rage meter' went off the charts, in time the boiling, savage anger he felt increased his body heat to ridiculous levels, and melted through the inhibitor in his body, short-circuiting it. Now unbound by the inhibitor, Rankor was, as a Rexaur, Point One Percenter, a genetically modified and evolved Rexaur and finally, rage-fuelled monster, now at his strongest, declaring "No one...controls...RANKOR!!!" and then he was able to break himself free of his restraints, causing Rassaag to remark that it was impossible that he could be that strong. Rankor let out a heaven-shaking, thunderous roar at Rassaag, and then yelled out "Rankor....SMASH!!!" and then vengefully smashed his two massive fists onto Rassaag multiple times, beating him roughly and breaking the scientist's armour and smashing his bones. Rankor then roared again and delivered a wallop to Rassaag with his tail then sent him flying across to another platform.
Rankor was then informed by Skol that they'd made it aboard one of the ships and that they were awaiting guidance. Rankor then got to the control console and tried to figure it out, only just managing to guide the right ship into the slipspace portal where they could make an escape. Rankor was touched to hear the voices of his friends wishing him good luck and good hunting as they were about to escape through the slipspace portal with the help of Rankor controlling the weather. As they escaped through the portal, the feedback from slipspace caused a massive detonation of energy which wiped out part of the tower and the platforms around it. The Vulcanauts were only able to see the explosion and assumed the worst in that Rankor died in it.
Rankor however, was sent into a Desticron dropship which he commandeered, gambling that perhaps he could make it through the slipspace portal. The problem was that the portal had now become an unstable wormhole over High Charity and he was one of the first to be pulled and drawn into the other side....
Rankor awoke later, after what felt like months, crash-landed in a wintry mountainscape. Rankor collected his weapons and moved along, trying to find out where he was and why he was there, this didn't seem like a Desticron world to him. Rankor walked past a sign detailing that he was in the Canadian Rockies- he was on Earth, and realised that he would need to stay away from civilisation, believing that the humans would be horrified by the sight of such a massive individual like himself, and also, he needed to work with his 'rage meter', and keep people safe from himself.
This didn't work out too well, as numerous sightings were reported of a 'dinosaur' walking among the streets. The reports fit the descriptions given by General Earnest Thompson years ago, who took command of a UNSC Army taskforce to go on the hunt for Rankor. The hunt meant Rankor had to run and escape across several borders somehow without causing too much damage or any incidents for fear of both hurting innocent people and having his steps traced back to him. Believing Thompson intended to capture him and make him into a weapon, Rankor made an effort to learn as much as he could about humans and places on Earth and how they worked, making him even harder to track as Rankor ran through the wilderness, where he sought to declare himself 'king' of all the animals and predators.
He escaped to Central America, then South America where he now settles in a cave in the jungles overlooking Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro.

Cool concept. Though the tail looks a little too flimsy.
