Description This was fun.

I decided to do a 'remake' of the cover of the comic that had a huge effect on me. It was X-Men Issue 35 written by Fabian Nicieza, pencilled by Liam Sharp and inked by Robin Riggs. See it here...

I thought i might mess around a little with the composition by moving the figure more into the foreground and push Cyclops and Phoenix into a smaller corner; to make them look more trapped. Also, the costumes Liam Sharp came up with just weren' t working for me when i tried to draw them, so i just changed them to the current SHIELD uniforms (In the issue, it was a variation of SHIELD uniforms that were given to them, so it still makes sense story-wise)

Weirdly; i hate purple, but i just used the colour of the fog from the original cover and ran with it. Think it worked out okay

Rad stuff. Especially like the powerful use of pure shadow in the foreground-figure.

I really like the changes made to it. Most notably the composition. I think it works really well.

Thanks! It doesn't work as well as a cover i think, as a lot of that black space would be covered by text, but without text; i think it came out okay

yeah, I would have to agree..I wasn't looking at it from the standpoint of it being a cover

Bloody hell! That's very nice of you mate! Going back a few years...

My costumes were the only time these characters ever dressed that way. They were stupidly, overtly sexy - in fact my Jean Grey had an exposed mid-rift, which they turned into part of the costume (ie. they removed her belly button. LOL!) Would love to draw the XMen again one day. Hard to believe I ever did!

Thanks mate. This made my day.

Yeah, i remember the costumes were for that issue only. Fury had given them those costumes if i remember correctly. I'm sure a have badly-drawn copies lifted from the issue in an old sketchbook. It was my first 'proper' American comic and it totally got me hooked. Hope you don't mind the homage!

One thing I did do was keep the full cowl. I always thought he'd set his hair on fire otherwise!
Just saw the comments below. Funny!

Yeah, i always thought the blasts would always trim his fringe for him. I like the cowl; it makes him more iconic, i think.

Actually looking at my cover I remember now that the costume was nude right up the side, like a mankini... completely, preposterously impractical! Thus raged my young hormones!

I like the cowled look for Cyclops better, but the hopeless nerd in me have to comment on why he might not need it from a safety-standpoint...

Cyclops beam isn't a laser. There's no heat, and hardly any radiation other than the red light, which is just regular light. Most of the energy is pure force, so it's actually more like a giant cross-bow bolt crossed with a wind-tunnel, then a Flash Gordon-style laser-gun.

This is great, Dec! Love your shadowed figure taking up so much of the live space. Certainly seems more imposing that way and really makes the pair feel like they're in some serious danger. Well done, you!

Thanks Chris. To be fair, the above wouldn't really work as there's no space for the logo and whatnot, but as an illustration on it's own, I think it turned out okay.

Thanks again sir
