Description Is someone would have asked and of course if he could have answered, the answer would be that he felt confused, utterly, utterly confused. But of course he didn’t know the meaning of the word 'confused' either.

Not even an hour old the colt still had small bits and pieces of the birth sack, that had protected him in the womb, and could be seen here and there on his body. The remains of the umbilical cord was still dangling under his belly. Four golden chestnut columns boxed him in and every now and then a warm tongue went over his small frame and almost made him topple over. It stinged a little bit as the large warm tongue passed over certain areas on his body, like his back just by his wither and the on his rump. The colt shivered, wiggled his tail and made a small noise. Then there was that strange feeling in his stomach, a gurgling sound, and a need he couldn’t really tell what it was. The creature that rested upon the golden chestnut columns hummed in a comforting tone and he wobbled a little closer to them. At least they were warm and the one firm point he knew so far.

The dark night air that had a heavy feeling over it thanks to the dark storm clouds was split by an angry scream by a horse. Not that far from the foal and gelding, a mare danced, spending more time on her hindlegs than on all four. Her neck and flanks were dark with sweat and her hooks even if it was hard to see were colored red by blood. Her udder was full and tight and helped to fuel her anger and fright over what just had happened. It was the colt’s mother and she was furious. The chestnut gelding, who’s pelt that were sporting several bite and kick marks, ‘gifted’ by the mare, did something that was rare for him to do and especially towards this mare, his halfsister. He flattened his ears and then swung his hindend out, lifting a hoof and threatening to kick her. He had given her a few good punches already, enough for her to back off – for the moment. The gelding knew she would be back, she wanted the colt.

Now before anyone would jump to conclusions it wasn’t a bad thing that the gelding had ‘foalnapped’ the young colt. Given the state of the remains of the placenta and how she had charged the foal before the gelding managed to intervene the clever horse knew it wouldn’t have been alive for long. He also knew that if he moved out of her way now and let her get the foal back it wouldn’t take long before she killed it. The gelding knew his master would come…sooner or later…he would never leave them out in the coming rain storm…and it was coming…he could smell it…the winds pulling in the trees brought the scent, thick and heavy.

Another angry scream and the mare reared once more, pawing her frontlegs in the air like she would have been a warrior mare. The gelding kept his ears pinned towards her but then shifted as he picked up the sound of a car coming down the driveway, and it was not just any car. His master’s car! The mare had heard the sound too and bolted towards as far away she could come in the pasture. Her entire posture was tense and high strung like a piano wire even if she liked this human. It was like she knew deep down that she had done something bad. The man called after he had stepped out of the car, jiggling a lead, but the gelding wasn’t sure on how to get the little colt to follow him. He couldn’t leave him. By now the little colt was starting to get tired and was now leaning on his frontleg more and more. It wouldn’t take long before the colt would want to lie down. Instead the gelding called back but didn’t move, he glanced towards the corner of the pasture he knew his sister was lurking in. If he moved just a little towards his master, leaving this spot, she would come for the foal. There had been predators lurking around the pasture earlier, drawn by the smell of blood as the mare had started to foal. One had come close as she had been lying down. Now the mare thought that everything small and dark was those creatures. Just as the gelding called again, deep throaty neigh, a small light came to shine on him. The light came from a thing in his master’s hand. It had jerked as his master must have seen the colt, then it shifted from him and the colt to search the pasture for his sister that didn’t looked the slightest happy to see the human and then back to them once more.

Why his master didn’t look happy the gelding wasn’t sure so he called to him again, a bit apologetically for that he didn’t come when he called but that it was a reason for this and he hoped his master would understand. A small peep came from the colt and the gelding hummed, nosing the still damp tuft of a forelock. The foal had poked around his belly earlier and he wasn’t that sure what it wanted. He had been a good boy, but now his master could take over…please! His sister made him nervous and he swished his tail to let some of his nervous emotions out. Ears pricked, he then looked over to his human that reached for something in his jacket, and usually that jacket could give out treats, but instead it fished out another object, did something with it and then held it up to his ear.

“Gabriel…she foaled but…there is a problem…a big pissed chestnut mare problem…you and Lillian need to come here and help me… now!”

I know this has been a long time coming, but, Eeeeee!!! I love the relationship between Ben and little Ace! They're way too cute together. You did an aaamazing job on this pic. I love the mood of it with the eerie bg and both of the horses looking a little beat up. And of course, I adore how you drew Ben, thanks for adding him in the image!

ah...well...since his parents so to say "fell in love" when it stormed I sort of felt that it would fit if their son was born close to one too...
